Don't subject him to this torture!
Hah, thanks, yeah, I don't think I'll go hunting for issues. If I do run into any "naturally" I'll be sure to speak up...

Yeah ... I expected a bit more since it is the same SSD as the late 2013 Mac Pro. Since I had just loaded it up when I ran the test, it may have been doing a Spotlight index or something too. I will have to check it again after it has a chance to settle in. Maybe someone else will post their results for comparison too. My Mac Pro runs faster as well with a RAID-0 SSD of M4s on a Tempo Pro card.
you didn't get my point. i mean you will never notice an SSD w/r 700mbs and one with r/w1000....only when you are copy paste large files etc..i prefer to be more lasting than more performant.. i think 700mbs is the sweet spot
Hi,
Can you please run some graphics benchmarks on it and post the results? Here are some links, free versions are available.

could you please check in the System Profiler if the SSD is connected with 2 or with 4 PCIe lanes? have a look in the PCI Cards section, Link Width: x2 or x4. THNX!

the model number "APPLE SSD SM1024F " indicates that it's the SAMSUNG made SSD and the very same SSD gives 1200+ MB/Sec in the Mac Pro because it's connected using 4 lanes.
Just ordered mine!
Upgraded processor and video.
I went with the 512GB SSD. And let me tell you . . . I agonized over this decision between the SSD and the 3TB Fusion. I already have a Drobo 5D that I store most of my work on, so storage is not truly a problem.
But I'm coming from a late 2009 27" iMac, so I figured that the Fusion drive would be a world of improvement from the standard 1TB drive.
I chose the SSD because I'm a photographer shooting a Nikon D800. The raw files are huge which means I spend time transferring many images. I spend time running RAW images through Lightroom and send them over to the Drobo. Too many reviews have said go with the SSD over a Fusion, so I opted for quality over quantity.
Anyway . . . I live in Memphis so when they run that bad boy through the hub, I am here waiting for it!
That's a bit sucky. Wonder why they used a fast SSD and then crippled the interface on it?
Glad to see the first orders are being delivered today. Mine is on the plane from Shanghai and should arrive in Memphis tonight. I'm not holding much hope to get it tomorrow in LA, but I'll still clean up my desk tonight![]()
Well what do you know, Mine got delivered just now. Federal Express did come through. Thank you Fed-Ex.
Has anyone in the US with a UPS delivery date of Friday 10/24 gotten past this point? Mine's been stuck at this update for over a day (that's Shanghai time that is shown)/
Shanghai, China 10/20/2014 9:05 P.M. Arrival Scan
10/20/2014 8:50 P.M. Departure Scan
10/20/2014 5:04 P.M. Origin Scan
China 10/20/2014 1:54 A.M. Order Processed: Ready for UPS
Some folks with non-expedited UPS shipping have already received theirs, is this true?
I'm quite excited for it, but I had a quick question on the RAM. I just purchased 2 16GB kits from Crucial and was wondering if I should install the sticks before the first boot or replace the original Apple sticks after the first boot? I know it sounds silly but would it make any difference? Thank you.
Won't make a difference, but I would probably boot once without to have knowledge that the iMac was working when shipped in its original state (if it should stop working after RAM install).Hello everyone! This is my first post on macrumors! I was always confused by posting in forums in general, but I have been reading this one for a couple of years now.
Anyways, I just placed my order for the Retina 5K Display iMac with:
-4.0GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.4GHz
-8GB RAM
-1TB Flash Storage
-AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB GDDR5

There is nothing under PCI cards ... none installed.
However, under SATA I find this for the "Apple SSD Controller":
Apple SSD Controller:
Vendor: Apple
Product: SSD Controller
Physical Interconnect: PCI
Link Width: x2
Link Speed: 5.0 GT/s
Description: AHCI Version 1.30 Supported
So there is the problem ... only 2 lanes!
Of course, in real world use, I will never see these speeds unless I am running benchmarks all day!![]()
using only 2 lanes is unacceptable! there's NO technical reason for this. pure politics/marketing to set the iMac apart from the Mac Pro...
Won't make any difference either way. Mine is on order as well with the default 8GB and I ordered two Crucial 16GB kits just like you.
There actually might be a technical reason.
Look at Anandtechs review of the Mac Pro and compare the available PCI-E lanes for a Haswell and Xeon CPU.
First, can you link to the Crucial page with that memory configuration?
Next question...
Are you adding the 2 16GB kits to the existing 8GB or taking that 8GB out?
I only need 32GB of RAM memory, but if I can keep the standard 8GB in the iMac as well I wouldn't mind having 40GB.
Appreciate the help
Mine made it one step further....
10/20/2014 11:35PM Export Scan
....which according to UPS means "the shipment has cleared export procedures in the origin country."
But that happened almost as long ago as yours. It has still been 36 hours without an update.
hm, you might be right! AFAIK the MacBook Pro uses 4 lanes for the SSD, but it also has only one Thunderbolt port. this would make sense.
