I'm partially sighted so having the larger and sharper display is more important to me than portability. Here's the config: 3.5 GHZ i5, 8GB RAM, 1TB FUSION DRIVE, AMD M290X Graphics. What'd you think? I'll upgrade ram by third party! Will this last up to 5 years?? Your opinions? This is for student bear in mind :) any way to get faster shipping and delivery than standard after ordering?

Sounds like a fine configuration to me :) I don't believe you can change the shipping w/o canceling the entire order and starting over. You might want to call them though and find out for sure.

And getting closer... Apple just charged my credit card but items are shown as still processing.

Same here. I'm expecting mine before Halloween.

Cancel and reorder... mechanical devices are a thing of the past, they are noisy, slow and prone to failure. Get the SSD despite the fact that it has less capacity. You can always hook up an external disk and call it a day.

Also spend a little more $ and get AppleCare, you'll have nothing to worry for 3 years.

Can I just ring and change my current order? I bought apple care already! Any advice?

I can't do that after purchasing it can I? I've already put my order in?

----------

Oh OK thanks :) would you recommend I change my order to ssd or keep fusion drive?? :/

Man, take a deep breath and stop double-guessing yourself based on unknown people's recommendations.

Both disks are good, it comes down to what you will use it for. My personal preference, or OurDarkness' personal preference are just that. I got the SSD because I don't need extra storage, and if I do, I don't need it to be internal.

Sounds like you ordered on a whim, didn't you ? So unless you do have a good reason to change your order, sit back, have a beer or something, and enjoy the wait.

So if you get the Apple Care and you only plan on keeping it for 3 years anyway, wouldn't getting the fusion drive be ok-ish then?
I don't really want stuff hanging off my beautiful iMac.

@HennersPD:

You say that you are a student and you ask whether this machine will work for 5 years, but you give too little information. What kind of student? Will you be writing papers for the uni, will you be drawing huge CAD stuff, will you be composing for film and need 500 channels of pristine audio, will you be rendering images in Houdini?

I don't see the necessity for the Fusion drive... the iMac is not exactly a computer to be carried around. You can always add more storage later, why not have a very fast disk in the first place? These are PCI-e flash devices, much faster than what an HDD can offer.

RAM... wise choice, can be upgraded later.

AppleCare.. wise choice, you don't have to worry for 3 years.

Graphics... depends on what will you use the iMac for.

CPU... same as above... maybe in 5 years (the time you want your iMac to last) :apple: will release a much more CPU-hungry OS. Who knows. That's up to you, if you have the $ go for it.

My 2 bites of :apple:

I ordered the 512GB SSD option and the 16GB RAM. Everything else standard.

Actually I wanted 32GB of RAM, but I will order it elsewhere, since Apple is always charging a lot for RAM.

I don't trust them. I am a network administrator, I have about 150 computers to worry about and HDD do fail and you do have a headache afterwards. Fusion drives are a hybrid, but it's the HDD part that worries me.

I have a Vaio laptop from 2008 with a small SSD and you know how many times I had problems? 0. Because it's a small one it has the OS and some apps. All other crap is on a second disk.

Works like a charm, boots very fast = I am happy.

Even if someone wants to get Applecare, why not wait till the end of the first year after purchasing the iMac?

OK thank you and not a whim, an informed decision as I thought if I have it for 4/5 years it would be better to have more storage :)

I'm your average student who will be researching and writing papers, no graphically intensive stuff. So would you recommend I change my order if so what to? Should I change from the fusion drive? I'm wondering since I can cancel my order?!?

Whatever you choose, you need a backup disk. You NEED one. And yes, it will be hanging off the iMac, unless you get a NAS or this

So should I change my order to an ssd? What'd you think? Help please?

Would you say just keep the order I've got? Is it possible to swap out fusion drive for ssd after purchase? Like get a professional to change it?

They charged my credit card and next thing I knew it went to prepared for shipment. I expect to see it change from prepared to shipped in about 6-7 hours from now based on past experience of ordering. Flights out of China start at 6:30 am Monday wich is about 6-7 hours from now.

A person could wait on AppleCare but keep in mind while the warranty is good for 1 year if you don't get apple care then you lose the phone support after the first 2-3 months so I always get Apple care whenever I buy. Comes pre-registered.

You can swap the Hard drive on the iMac, but I prefer to just order the SSD when purchasing my iMac.

Why would someone need phone support? We have the Internet and we can Google everything...

Mine just went to preparing for shipment!! I think they are shipped out Sunday night from China at least that is what I've seen in previous orders I've had. So it is possible we might get it at the end of this week?!

Yes you are right China ships Monday morning from China which is Sunday night in USA so we should see some shipments going out in about 6-8 hours from now. I am very excited to get mine!

Well that's true but sometimes it does help to have it as a option. If you buy Apple care after 1 year or at the beginning of the sale you still only get 2 years of coverage and it starts from date of original sale so if you are buying Apple care at all might as well get your money's worth and do it within the first 3 months. Just my opinion.

That, and if you get it after the purchase, you have to prove your computer doesn't have any problem at the time. Which means, you have to take it to an Apple Store.

And AppleCare won't cost you less.

So should I keep my current order and upgrade to an ssd later or cancel my current order and go for an ssd??!

If it was me I would order SSD drive with the order and not have to change it out later. It's better in my opinion to have Apple install it. MHO.

Have you ever had to take your computer to Apple store to prove its ok in order to buy Apple care? I added Apple care once after the purchase (usually if I buy Apple care I buy it at time of purchase) one time and it was like 9 months into the warranty period but i did not have to take it in to the Apple store. I wonder if they changed policy on this? And you are right Apple care will not cost you less if you wait to buy it. It is just easier to buy it at time of purchase.

No, I've always bought it at time of purchase, but I read that somewhere yesterday.

Mine is still Processing. Estimated delivery is 24-28/10 but I sure hope I'll get it on Friday so I can play with it next week-end !

iFixit published its teardown review. People wondering how easy it would be to replace the hard drive should watch it.

SSDs do fail and while it's less common, when they do it's ugly. Really ugly.

I do data recovery and I would recommend being just as paranoid about backups when using SSDs as mechanical drives.
