They charged my credit card and next thing I knew it went to prepared for shipment. I expect to see it change from prepared to shipped in about 6-7 hours from now based on past experience of ordering. Flights out of China start at 6:30 am Monday wich is about 6-7 hours from now.

The iMacs are assembled in the USA, so they don't ship from China.

SSDs do fail and while it's less common, when they do it's ugly. Really ugly.

I do data recovery and I would recommend being just as paranoid about backups when using SSDs as mechanical drives.
THANK YOU!
This is exactly what I was thinking.
Everyone is thinking SSD is the holy grail. While I will agree that the failure rate of SSD is lower than HDD, they do in fact can fail. To think otherwise would be foolish. Mechanical drives have been around for a long time and I have indeed had some fail, but it goes with the territory and that is why you always backup. IMHO, the fusion drive is the best of both worlds until the price and storage capacity of SSD comes down/up.

I just helped myself make my mind up to go with the fusion after your post and thinking more about it.
THANK YOU!:D

That, and if you get it after the purchase, you have to prove your computer doesn't have any problem at the time. Which means, you have to take it to an Apple Store.

And AppleCare won't cost you less.

You don't have to prove anything because you're still covered under the one year AppleCare warranty. It's not AppleCare+.

Indeed! Personally, I've experienced more failures in recent years (mine, family's, friends') with SSDs than mechanical drives. Anecdotal, but still..

I went with the 3TB Fusion in the end. Doesn't matter how fast that Ferrari is if I can't take my family to the movies in it. :)

Later on, if the family decides it doesn't want to go to the movies with me anymore, I can pop the hood and make adjustments. ;)

just jumping in regarding the U.S. price - with the exception of my current 2010, I've always paid around $2500 for 21.5" iMacs as I usually get the maximum spec so the price of this retina seems standard as far as my personal costs.

While I've been down on iMacs lately (the only type of Mac I've owned since 1999), the retina iMac is very tempting. I was blown away by the screen on the rMBPs (with my vision it was nice to stand a couple of feet away and see exactly what I was typing.) I'll have to see this at the store.

Congratulations to everyone who has ordered one. May you get many years use and enjoyment from it.

Where did you hear that from? The last two iMacs i ordered one in 2009 and another in 2012 both was always shipped from China as I followed the tracking from start to finish. What proof do you have that all iMacs are shipped from USA?

My slim 2012 iMac that I ordered CTO was assembled and shipped from within the U.S. The new Retina iMacs like the new Mac Pro are also assembled in the U.S. IFixit's Retina iMac was not a CTO model and it was also assembled in the U.S.

That is very odd considering someone in the UK has an earlier estimated delivery date than the people that ordered as soon as it became available in the US. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Yes I ordered mine last Friday (17th) and have an estimated delivery between the 23rd-27th of October - I'm in the UK btw! :D

All I know is the fact that the last 2 iMacs i have ordered were shipped from China. I wish it was true because mine is due to ship out any time now and if it shipped by tonight or early on monday then I would get it in Tuesday which would be awesome but it's highly unlikely. If I am wrong and I get it shipped from USA then I will come back to eat my words. ;)

99.5% it'll ship from here.

Right about backups. Wrong about fusion. Keep those slow spinners OUTSIDE the computer where they belong.Just one more mechanical thing to possibly go wrong, at which time your entire iMac is out for repair. Ouch. SSD's rule.

Really? That is interesting. I guess we shall wait and see what happens.

That is interesting, I ordered mine immediately after the store opened after the event and got a shipping delivery date range of Oct 24-27. It's interesting that your delivery time is earlier than mine. However mine is already in prepared for shipment so mine will ship soon either tonight or early tomorrow I hope. Is yours in prepared for shipping then in this case?

99.5% it'll ship from here.

Wishful thinking, and I hope you are right and I will be happy to eat my words stated earlier that it will ship from China instead. I can't wait to see how this plays out.

I bet that iMac you ordered last was not the slim model right? That is why it shipped from China, because it was made in...wait for it...China.

It may have to do with where you are in the country and whether ahy else paid for expedited shipping. Mine says even later:
Preparing for Shipment Available to ship: 3-5 business days Delivers: Oct 28 - Oct 30 by Standard Shipping

They've been assembling *some* iMacs in the US, and some in China since late 2011 at least. From what I've read, nobody knows why or where.

http://9to5mac.com/2012/12/02/is-there-some-secret-imac-assembly-plant-in-the-u-s/

I sure would like mine to be assembled in the US, because it looks like they come from Fremont/San Jose, so if it came from there, I would get it the next day !

Same here since I live in Vegas I would get it the very next day but don't see that happening but I hope I am wrong on this.

Well I live on west coast (Vegas) and I did pay for express shipping ($30 extra) and would love to get it early. I am presently scheduled for Oct 24-27 however I am in prepared for shipment now waiting for actual shipment sometime tonight or overnight hopefully then we will know.

By the way, once it is in "preparing for shipping: status, the cust serv rep can't upgrade shipping, free or otherwise. I should have thought of that Friday. They usually will do that free of charge. Especially since the orders come in the west coast and move across the country from there and I'm in Maryland. Cust Serv rep thought they mostly come from China.

As mine is still "processing items" is it possible for me to ring up and get faster shipping and delivery?? :/

Yes. It says "Available for shipping 3-5 business days". For those who ordered on Thursday, only ONE business day has passed.

It will arrive when Apple says it will - their delivery estimations are pessimist at best, spot-on at worst.

You can get faster delivery, but it won't make it ship any faster. You can call and get the 2-3 business days delivery instead of 3-5. But that only makes a difference AFTER IT HAS SHIPPED.

Its hard to say when it will be delivered. since you are in still processing mode i think it may be possible to change your delivery speed and get express shipping. But you need to call Apple to change it and they can tell you if it can be changed or not. if it goes to prepared for shipment before you get a chance to call Apple then I think it s not possible at that point to change the shipping speed.

This part I disagree with you. I sometimes Apple surprises us and delivers early. I had it happen a few times on a couple of orders.

This part is correct. It will only take affect after the iMac has shipped and probably saving you 1 maybe 2 days of shipping time if you are lucky.

No, you're wrong the one I ordered in 2012 was the slim model and it did ship from . . . Wait for it. . . Uh. . . China

Just for kicks, I checked my label under my iMac and it says Assembled in China. And it was shipped from China. It will be interesting to see if they are being shipped from China or California. Soon we shall all know.
