Do you back it all up to an external storage device? I’d be too worried about losing all my data if it were only on the phone

I haven't set up a new phone from scratch in years. Every new phone gets restored from the last. I think it was iPhone 6 that was the last one I started from scratch. Photos, music, video, all seperately backed up. That's one of the reasons why I prefer iOS over Android - if you back up properly, it takes very little effort to restore your phone.

Yeah I was mostly asking based on someone saying cloud storage is just a money grab. I am all in on backups.

Been saving since I started working at 18. Not to say I’ve never made frivolous purchases but retirement is super important.

Sounds like you have buyers remorse. I don’t know what your financial situation is, but if I were you, I’d cancel the order and get 256gb.
Apple may likely bump the base storage on the iPhone 14 in 2022 to 256GB along with the next iPad Pro update. The reason being that for some of the capabilities 256GB if storage is required and can be misleading to some not into reading fine print. Plus the regular iPhone models have bumped up the base storage to 128GB leaving little incentive for the “the best iPhone” pro moniker.

Plus the likely inclusion of USB-C which I suspect is overdue at this point.

Second half of 2021 for iOS devices is the year of iPad mini 6.

Not for me. Tech is my hobby and vice.

Still driving a 12 year old car and the last time I bought shoes was because my old one was so worn out the sole snapped in half.
Lol, I wear out my shoes with heavy activity and it provides a requirement to get new one as the previous ones have a hole in the toe section 😝

I’m the same way. I like my tech. I used to be into watches but that was before I had a clock in my pocket. I drive my car till it falls apart. I wear my cloths till they are rags. But my tech is important to me.

I guess I just like to give my money to Apple. I don't have a good reason for ordering the 1TB version (Pro in Sierra Blue) but I ordered it anyway. Now I am trying to find a good use for the extra storage space. Did anyone else do the same?

How much space are you currently using?

and people wonder why folks don’t have money for retirement!😬

Its a very important point to make and also a big part of why my purchases have been limited over the past few years. I personally have made a conscious effort to put a lot of my savings away towards retirement. My biggest purchase recently is my M1 MacBook Pro, which was an impulse buy, but a very good one.

At the same time, retirement is a long way off, so between then and now, what I will do is pick up some items as needed. A smarter strategy even though my fixed target for an upgrade from my iPhone X is 2023, will be to just stretch out my upgrades.

I never thought my iPhone 6s would still be getting iOS updates 6 years later. So, what I might do, max out the free OS upgrades for each of my current devices then replace it. The fact that Apple is still selling the Apple Watch 3, means its definitely getting watchOS 9. I see support for iOS updates for X going out to at least 2026. So, I could very well put more away for retirement and upgrade when I truly need it.

I’ve never been able to hold onto a phone got multiple years but I’m definitely eager to try. I can’t think of a reason I’d need an upgrade but I can’t think of several reasons I’d need the money

Haha yeah every time I check my 401k I get a lil rush. Since I’ve been putting away so much for so long I’m well past where I should be for my age. I know people my age and older that have nothing saved. Idk how they aren’t stressed all the time. Or maybe they are it’s that whole “be like a duck” thing

Nice. My most expensive possessions (aside from my cars and home) are my tv, phone, and iPad. she wouldn’t sell the tv or iPad and might even hold onto the phone. A lot of my money goes towards buying my kid stuff in her games.

I don't have a cabin, I don't have a fancy car (unless you consider a Prius fancy). I like to splurge on technology (most of which comes from Apple). I don't even update that often (as it has been 4 years now).

I'm actually feeling much better about my purchase. I'm looking forward to having the top tier as far as storage goes. I may even get into 4K videos which take up a lot of space.

If you start shooting 4k ProRes video, you'll use that space right up. If you're not into video yet, you just gave yourself a great excuse :)

That was oddly specific…how did you know I have a cabin 😆

there are still small rumors that the 1TB may have 8GB ram

I bought the TB as a want. I have ~740gb in iCloud Photos and I want it locally. Only reason I bought the first 1TB iPad Pro (228gb free currently). Early on (~2012) I learned that an iOS device running out of storage forces a person to upgrade (myself included).

Will I buy a 2TB iPhone in the future (unlikely), but at least I can all my photos locally so I don’t need to download them if I’m trying to share something with a friend. That has always been a pain especially when you’re in a low coverage area and wifi isn’t an option. I had one too many of those occurrences.
