And all this so they have a "bridge" phone and make the X more expensive than usual.

Honestly I'm so upset with the colors. I'm not gonna go from mat black back to that hideous space grey color.

I don't understand the "of course it's more expensive, because it's the future of the iPhone" arguments at all, to be honest.

Every iPhone release so far, the new one took the price point of the previous high-end model (sometimes with a modest raise), while the previous generation became a little cheaper. Now we get the same design for the fourth time in a row for the price of the previous generation, while the "new" model is WAY more expensive.

I just don't buy that, sorry. We didn't have to pay such a large premium for the iPhone 4 when a gorgeous new design and the retina screen came along, neither when Touch ID was introduced with the 5s.

I had some understanding that they iterated the same design the third time last year with the iPhone 7, because I expected them to come up with something really great this year, which just needed more time. Now that phone is here, but it's in a new "luxury" price-tier and not at all as great as expected, while the previous high-end price tag is reserved for a fourth iteration of the same old design, which was never my favorite in the first place!

Just look at the presentation of Face ID. Compared to Touch ID gen 2, it's WAY slower and requires an additional swipe. That swipe itself shows the concept is not thought through. If Face ID unlocked you to a newly designed home screen right away which integrated the notifications, that would be much more of a though-through concept.

The main issue I have with Apple Watch is that you have to raise your wrist to glance at the time. It's annoying as hell, and the main reason why I don't use my Watch for anything else than sports any more. Now the same "raise to do stuff" comes to iPhone. So sad :(

I’m sorry, but you obviously don’t want to be taken seriously if you’re going to say that the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 6 are the same phone.

I understand where he's coming from. I think what he meant, was that you obviously expect the usual spec bumps year-on-year (cpu, gpu, camera, etc.) - but externally, we've not seen a radical departure from the design language introduced with the iPhone 6 in 2014. Sure they had a jet black finish last year, moved the antenna bands around a bit, and slapped a slab of glass on the back this year - but we've had phones that have essentially looked the same since 2014, which isn't great for a company like Apple, that prides itself on its industrial design prowess. I mean even with the SE, they simply reused the original iPhone 5 design from 2013. On the other hand, you have competitors like Samsung that are really pushing the boundaries with their designs, for example, for the S8 and Note8. I don't think there's even a comparison here - both the S8 and Note8 run circles around the iPhone X - they're breathtaking from every angle. The iPhone X on the other hand looks ugly (and unfinished IMHO) with it's front cut-out and camera bump on the back - not to mention that tacky stainless steel band.

The past few years I've seen a degradation in the simplicity that Apple used to embrace

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I was absolutely certain that I was going to upgrade to the X, particularly after watching the rumours gradually grow as the months passed by.

However, the below summarises just how much Apple have alienated their customers:

Samsung Galaxy S8 (64 GB only storage option but expandable) + Samsung Mobile Care = £788.
iPhone X (256 GB) + AppleCare = £1,348.

This disparity is even more obvious when discounts are applied. If you consider the usual 2% reduction Apple provides for the iPhone in the UK for those on some kind of discount scheme, and compare this to Samsung, it's even more staggering...

Samsung Galaxy S8 (64 GB only storage option but expandable) + Samsung Mobile Care = £685.
iPhone X (256 GB) + AppleCare = £1,321.

(Above figures are based on what discounts I am personally entitled to, but most others will be similar).

Whilst the above may be slightly out when Apple actually releases the X, the difference is shocking. Apple really are alienating their consumers by making a 'class' system of phones, and the adjoining price tag. You could argue that most companies opt for a similar system, but most of Apple's customers are not ordinary folk who buy an iPhone because they need any old phone. Most buy the iPhone because there is an element of loyalty and belief in the company's quality, brand and ecosystem.

In my opinion, Apple has taken a serious chip out of that loyalty with this release. That's how I feel, and I can't say I've ever believed that with any previous editions of the iPhone.

Imagine if Apple had moved touch ID to back of phone, people would be going nuts. That's sloppy.

Samsung isn't pushing anything as they'll always be limited by their own bloatware and inability to make any samsung exclusive feature more than half baked. No one in their right mind uses Samsung's services or crap apps. It's junk. Fortunate for them, many unwashed users buy samsung because it looks cool but are unwashed users to start with. These guys are happy if they can do facebook, take a pic, send a message, etc and are pretty clueless. Apple is so far ahead of samsung/android that it's laughable. Google is still trying to catch up. Samsung never will. Smart users know this.

You've turned this into a software argument - I was complimenting Samsung on their recent phone designs. Fully agree to your point about Samsung bloatware, although they've been getting better of late.

The iPhone 8 should've been released last year as the final "iPhone 6 design" phone.

And they should've only released the iPhone X this year, at a similar price to previous iPhones at launch. The only reason they're releasing 8 and X together is to make the X more expensive.

I used to upgrade every 2 years (got 4, 5 and 6 at launch) and skipped last year because the 7 wasn't a new design. I'd feel stupid buying an 8 right now, so it's the X or nothing. I can afford the ridiculous price in Canada, but part of me doesn't want to encourage the price hike.

exactly the same feelings here. went from OG iPhone > 3GS > 4 > 5 > 6 and stopped. minimal upgrades IMO to the 7 so i waited. i want something different, new and shinny so the X it is.

I planned on buying this phone ever since the rumors said it would have OLED. The face-ID thing is a fail to me. I'm outside most of the time with my sunglasses on. Having to remove my sunglasses to unlock my phone will be a major pain in the ass. I may just hold off for a year in hopes that touch ID makes a return.

From what they said yesterday, it will work with glasses on.

You shouldn't have to remove your sunglasses, it uses the infrared camera.

It's not a retina scanner... It's a face scanner.
It recognises your face, even if you start wearing glasses, beard, hat, headscarf...

I saw it would work fine with eye glasses, there was no mention of sunglasses though. If you're right that would be a game changer for me.

Seriously now: let's step back and look at the whole picture.

I'm a "all Apple" kind of guy but this is getting way silly. I mean, I understand the X is a "Special Edition" phone, setting the standard for that the next iPhones will be or look like, but its price is ridiculous.
I could afford it but I can't justify the price. I like it, but it's way too expensive (at least here, in Europe). For that price you can buy a Macbook Pro!

And then let's talk the 8. It's the same phone again. Yes, since the 6.

It's hard for me to recommend any of the new iPhones to people who ask me what I think. Specially considering what the competition offers now. We're no longer in 2007 and they are closer (if not above) than ever.

After the Keynote I was like "yes, I'm buying the X" (I see no point in upgrading my 7 Plus to anything else on their lineup), but now... I can't justify it...
The display is nice and we finally get OLED (something that I've been asking for ages), but...

I don't want to turn this thread into a flame war or anything... I'm just "letting it out".

In my opinion there should be no iPhone 8 and we should have only the X as a new model, priced as the 7 was last year. That would be a bit more acceptable, no?
Everything I just read says you will buy the X on launch day and that you just can't admit it yet so instead you are telling us why you won't thinking you have yourself convinced.

It's ok to feel that way. Really.

I keep seeing people saying this about FaceID in regards to hats, beards, taking off sunglasses, etc. It's like, did people not watch the freaking keynote?! Phil said that it learns your face and will work with these things on. Plus you have to be looking at the phone for it to unlock so while you're sleeping someone just can't grab your phone and put it up to your face. Same with someone trying to steal it, all you would have to do is close your eyes.

They have a shortage of OLED. This thing was never going to sell at the normal price point. Not in hells chance.
