I understand where he's coming from. I think what he meant, was that you obviously expect the usual spec bumps year-on-year (cpu, gpu, camera, etc.) - but externally, we've not seen a radical departure from the design language introduced with the iPhone 6 in 2014. Sure they had a jet black finish last year, moved the antenna bands around a bit, and slapped a slab of glass on the back this year - but we've had phones that have essentially looked the same since 2014, which isn't great for a company like Apple, that prides itself on its industrial design prowess. I mean even with the SE, they simply reused the original iPhone 5 design from 2013. On the other hand, you have competitors like Samsung that are really pushing the boundaries with their designs, for example, for the S8 and Note8. I don't think there's even a comparison here - both the S8 and Note8 run circles around the iPhone X - they're breathtaking from every angle. The iPhone X on the other hand looks ugly (and unfinished IMHO) with it's front cut-out and camera bump on the back - not to mention that tacky stainless steel band.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
