Everything I just read says you will buy the X on launch day and that you just can't admit it yet so instead you are telling us why you won't thinking you have yourself convinced.

It's ok to feel that way. Really.

Eh not really. :)
24 hours ago I was quite sure I was going to buy it. Now, I'm convinced I won't. Unless the phone is way better than expected.
But on launch day I'll be on vacation. And I wouldn't spare a minute for a new phone.

No argument, Samsung has had all of these features well before the X, and in fact I will say I like how they handled the lack of a home button better then that silly swiping up that you need to do.

The past few years I've seen a degradation in the simplicity that Apple used to embrace

Ha, yes...swiping up equals difficult

It's not a retina scanner... It's a face scanner.
It recognises your face, even if you start wearing glasses, beard, hat, headscarf...

but it doesn't work if your eyes are closed, because it only works if it detects that you are looking at the screen. how is it going to see your eyes with sunglasses on? i don't think the IR light will travel through the sunglasses, because they are built to stop it.

can't be a coincidence that they showed all those different things, but not sunglasses.

You can turn the "awareness" option off if looking at your phone to unlock it is too much of a hassle.

That's the thing. I see Apple following and not leading.

The X is too expensive for a phone that has competition doing about the same for less. And then, the 8 is just a 6 with a new "facelift", keeping its aged design and sold as premium.

Unfortunately, Apple doesn't currently have a phone that is undeniably better than the competition. Years ago, buying Android was (to me, at least) an act of going for the lower end. Right now...I can picture myself changing sides (god forbid!). But it's the truth.

Problem with that is they may have similar specs, but not necessarily the same. The screens will likely be close, but definitely a big upgrade from iPhone's in the past. In regards to speed, the A11 will smoke anything the competition puts out until 2019. The facial recognition is way more advanced than anything Samsung or otherwise has. These are just a couple examples, but I think the "worth" is there. To me, having all of these great features (on other phones or otherwise doesn't really matter to me) coupled with iOS is completely worth the cost.

Also, although I'm being redundant as I have said it a few times in other threads, why does the base model only have 64GB? Seriously. For 1K, 128 should be the bare minimum. Believe it or not, this is one of the things that drove me over the edge in saying I'm sitting this one out.
That and the fact AppleCare is $199 is enough to hold on to my iPhone 7 Plus for another year.

In my opinion there should be no iPhone 8 and we should have only the X as a new model, priced as the 7 was last year. That would be a bit more acceptable, no?
My thoughts exactly. If the lineup next year doesn't have the iPhone X design as the standard instead of upsell (which is currently is), that'll be ludicrous. Frankly it's ludicrous now!

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus has A11.

The logical part of my brain thinks this:

I agree, but: Apple faced problems with producing the technology in sufficient quantities. So they raise the price to ensure the demand is less, and include all the features they can mass produce in the iPhone 8.

The more impatient part of me thinks this, however:

The iPhone X was first rumoured to have cameras, a speaker and Touch ID under the display. We swallowed the design of the 7 because we thought the 8 would be this amazing super update of a phone.

Now, we have in several ways a less impressive phone than was first rumoured (the notch accommodates the cameras, and Touch ID was left out). This phone, so we're told, can't even be the main iPhone.

What's more, if the iPhone 7 wasn't a rare stop gap, but would last for 2 years, why not begin to address the bezels and increase the screen size?

Apple is destroying the competition when it comes to their processors. I want the same to be true with cameras, the display, and the design. Make Android look like a joke.

Agreed, but I think there would have been a fairly large push back on a 1,000 phone. Apple is providing an upgrade path for the majority of people with the 8, and allows those that want to spend more to get the 1,000

Not for nothing but the Samsung S8 has nearly the same specs as the iPhone X (in fact many of the specs of the iPhone x have been in other android phones for years) and costs 840 dollars, closer to the iPhone 8 then the iPhone x but with iPhone x specs.
Problem with Samsung is that it runs Android, which I unfortunately cannot bring myself to use. I will say I have serious issues with the lack of innovation on iOS, but it is still far better than using Android. Specs are not everything. Not by a long shot.

Similarly I am sure there are plenty of Android users who have legitimate reasons they dislike iOS and prefer Android. And there are those who can switch back and forth with no issue.

I am not in that camp. I am an iOS user. This past year I tried the jailbreak thing a little bit on an older iPhone as I was too current on my 7 Plus to JB it. I certainly like some things. But unfortunately the JB community is falling apart any many great iOS 9 and earlier hacks have ceased development. So you can't JB and use newer hardware.

Except those android specs mean nothing when they're brand new Samesung flagship lose out to year old iPhones with less specs every single time in benchmark testing.

Let's be honest, benchmark tests don't mean much for the average consumer. Web browsing, watching YouTube, texting, Instagram -- we reached the sufficient processing power needing for those activities long ago. The A11 chip is impressive, but what does it offer over the A10 for the average person? Not much.

Very well stated.

Dare I say Apple is getting greedy. Before the reveal I also made the point that Apple would have to have a more segmented offering on hand if they were going to charge $1,000 for a flagship device. Many users, myself included, would not be willing to pay that much even if we were able.

It's an incredible attempt by Apple to rip-off Samsung, yet they've managed to make it look awful.

The S8 is far better looking.

Because benchmark testing is all I'd ever need to do with my phone?

Frankly, when it comes to beastly processors in smartphones, aside from the benchmarks and being able to say the chip in your smartphone out-performs older 8-core Mac Pros, there just isn't a huge day-to-day difference anymore.

As a colleague of mine just put:

"In a different world, where all manufacturers have the same OS (be it iOS or Android), would you pay the extra for the an iPhone X?"

It's actually $1149 US for the 256gb because a lot people need more than the $999 64gb. So, it's even more expensive. Wish they would have started with 128gb at least. I didn't upgrade my 128gb 6S+ because I was waiting for the X smaller lighter form factor with the same screen size. The S8+ is actually a tad thicker and heavier than the 6S+ which is not what I was hoping for. So, I am really on the fence about justifying $1149 for the X

Also, with the engineering resources at Apple's disposal, I'd have expected the bezels to be thinner. The Galaxy S8 and Note8 are aesthetically more appealing, and in my view, better looking than the iPhone X. The poor choices and compromises that inevitably led to Apple 'settling' on the iPhone X design is appalling, and simply do not justify the $999 price tag. Just my $0.02.

I have a feeling that the iPhone X design was chosen to look DIFFERENT from all of those other phones, rather than they just couldn't figure out how to do it. Imagine all of the "following the competition" comments if they had the same design cues.

rip-off what? every manufacturer wants to reduce the bezels to get a bigger screen at the same size. it's the only way to go. movies showed it like that many years ago, people have been making mockups like this for years, jony ive has always said that it was his dream to only have a screen....

The only market in which I can still say, without a doubt and without feeling that I'm being biased, that Apple is better is in the tablet market. I recommend an iPad without thinking twice.
Think twice! DO NOT BUY AN IPAD. After the iPhone X the next logical step is the bezel-less iPad X without a Home button. All previous iPads will instantly look old and dated. It's exactly the same situation as with the iPhone 6, 6s, 6ss (7) and 6sss (8). Despite all technological progress the iPad form factor hasn't changed in four years since the first Air in 2013. I wouldn't buy anotherone of these and you can bet the entry price of future iPads will go up up'n'away ...

And then let's talk the 8. It's the same phone again. Yes, since the 6.

You're wrong. Why don't you list specs and features from the 6 and 8 and compare?

Nope to all that. Not a 6sss and no bezelless iPad due to holding it requires screen touch.
