I tend to agree. I also, reluctantly, find myself agreeing more and more that there are major products coming out of Apple (iCloud and iWork being the biggest on my radar) that simply don't compete with the market. These are disturbing warning signs that the company is struggling.

I don't disagree that they appear (to me) to be struggling in some areas. I can see it, I hope they pull it all together. I echo the sentiment of skipping updates next year, give us 8.5 on new hardware. Clean up some stuff.

But, I'm not going to google over it.

OneDrive works great for me right now. I paid $65 for office 365 and 3 of us have storage for stuff. Can't beat the price.

I has to suck it up and spring for the 99 cent iCloud upgrade because my mail is still huge after they deleted it and restored it. There is a phantom folder there somewhere - doesn't matter what I delete, it stays the same size. They gave me 20gb free for a year while I deleted and such... But hey, it was still the same.

I'm not sure where I end up long term, I hate that MS is coming out with stuff I like.

So you're saying you're discounting the fact that 2 completely different people are running the company differently.

People "whining" doesn't change this fact. Tim Cook is running a mess of Apple. This is a fact. iCloud, Maps, 8.0.1, you name it. This is Tim Cook's Apple.

Understand this: The products Apple is releasing don't compete even remotely with more mature offerings. Apple needs to step its game. Why go with iCloud Photo Library when Picturelife or Dropbox's Carsousel are INFINITELY better. Why go with Maps, when Google has the process locked down? Why use iWork, when MS Office is vastly better and more robust and continuously updated?

Apple is a one trick pony. iPhone. Everything else they try to make is inferior.

Hardly.

Dropbox is garbage, and yes, I've used it. **** Google, I've already commented on them (and frankly, I like Apple Maps better). Google took years to mature maps. I remember the early days. It wasn't so pretty. iWork is INSURANCE. In the event MS Office was ever stopped being produced for Mac, iWork is there. Plus, it's FREE and not everyone want's to or can afford to spend the amount of money MS charges for desktop MS Office (and don't want to steal it either). Also, not everyone needs all the features MS Office provides, so it's there for them so they don't have to buy Office. Apple is hardly a "one trick pony" Boy, seriously? How ignorant are you. I should dismiss your comment from being worth of replying to based on that quote alone.....

There are two types of technology users. Those that adapt, and those that don't adapt. Don't be in the second group, you won't be happy.

Or people that use the best techonlogy (tool) for a given task or set of tasks. For me I use:

Productivity documents: Microsoft Office
Cloud Storage: Dropbox
Photos: Picturelife
Maps/Email: Google
Calendar/Contacts: iCloud (the only thing it seems to be good at)
Music: still working this one out. iTunes Match blows. Spotify is too expensive.

There are a lot of issues apparently. My biggest frustration was the multiple Apple ID's issue I stumbled into a few months ago.

And I still can't figure out why someone, or a bot, can't go in and just change the ownership bits in the database to consolidate all of my iTunes data on the one account. I mean I 'own' both accounts. The iTunes account is tied to MY credit card. I own all of the devices that I use.

So: WHAT THE HELL IS THE BIG HAIRY DEAL?!?!? Allow people to consolidate their own Apple ID accounts already!

Also I am deliberately not using any Apple 'cloud' services that involve my data aside from email. I don't trust the cloud, I don't trust the internets, and I just don't see the benefit in having to have an internet connection to work with my stuff!

Even iTunes Match seems a waste to me because I refuse to pay the extortion rates the airlines charge for internet access, and most businesses I'm sure want their investment in internet connections going to people streaming music.

But it's the ID thing that ticks me off the most.:confused::(:apple:

Show me a product graph from Apple that shows otherwise. iPhone is the majority of their business.

Apple can't even figure out how to combine people's Apple ID's without making a mess so they just ignore it. Don't even get me started on Aperture neglect.

They are clearly releasing things not yet ready for prime time (iOS 8, OSX 10.10).

The "core rot" at Apple is getting worse.

Don't forget the Hardware...
The problem I see with Apple is they want growth more than they want constancy nowadays. Tim maybe doesn't like constants because they do not grow.

My biggest problem with the whole iCloud Photo Library is the "all or nothing" approach Apple seems to have towards it.

For example, enabling it will disable the ability to sync photos from Aperture or iPhoto to your phone. Completely.

It's as if Apple expects me to upload my entire photo collection (several hundred GB) to the cloud to be able to continue to do what I do now, which is view selected parts of my photo library on my phone.

Not. Bloody. Likely.

Photos are among the most important data I have. They are irreplaceable. A few are private and I don't want them on the Internet. Apple has also failed to tell us exactly how we are supposed to BACK UP the iCloud Photo Library. All indications point to the cloud library being authoritative. Does Apple really expect us to trust them with the ONLY authoritative copy of our photos? Are they insane?

They did not think this through. Hopefully the delays mean they ARE thinking it through now and will implement it properly. However, I'm not holding my breath and I'm keeping my options open for now.

couldn't agree more. I have no faith what-so-ever in apple's ability to keep safe ANY of my data.

Remember MobileMe gallery?

Remember MobileMe gallery?

I thought that service was pretty good and used it for a long time with family and friends... But then it got taken away… just like iDisk, iTools, the website creation tool (whatever the name of that was)... I could go on and on.

Apple has made many unsuccessful attempts to do what their competition has been doing well for quite sometime now. They have publicly apologized for it and yet they just keep striking out...

I am very heavily invested in Apple products at home, my family and in my business. I like using Apple products because of the fact that they build the hardware and software to work together… But,

This is not to say that Apple hasn't let me down - time and time again - when it comes to anything online.

Using Apple products to run a business is a miserable experience and if I could afford to do it all over again I would have gone with windows. They really need to get their act together for enterprise. It looks like that's what they are going to focus on in 2015 from what I read...

For creation Apple is still the best.

But for on-line web networking... It's like I'm almost embarrassed for Apple...

The first 8GB is free. 100GB is $100 AND you get to share that with 2 other people with their own accounts. $150 you can go unlimited, up to 3 people, each on their own account.

Most people need only 100GB. It grows with you for $50 more once you're passed the 100GB limit.
Thanks, I obviously didn't go far enough. I shall look into this further as I take on consolidating my photos in the coming weeks. I have stuff on multiple drives, multiple computers and devices. Makes me want to ignore it.

Yikes, get well soon.
Thanks. Modern pharmaceuticals are amazing at times. Pain is starting to subside a bit, makes the shot that hurt like heck this morning worth it.

Now here is hoping I can sleep tonight!

How many more years of continued falling apart is it going to take for action to take place to get rid of Cook and bring back the style of leadership that preceded him? I hardly recognize Apple at all anymore. It seems like nearly everything is screwed up.

Does anyone like anything that Apple has done since Jobs left? Have they made a single product that offers the same level of quality of experience they offered in 2010?

Except that iWork isn't meant to "compete" with the market. That's not Apple's goal. They are not trying to unseat Office. As far as iCloud goes, it's great. Mail is great (with NO AD's). Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Contacts, Find my iPhone. All work flawlessly and are solid. iCloud Photo Library is a beta and iCloud drive is new. People bitching about iCloud Drive are naive if they thing this is the end of it's development. It will get better over time. Apple is quite the busy company, and they are the only company that consistently puts out quality and products people love more than anyone else. They also DO more than anybody else.

you're crazy. Dropbox is the bar and apple has a LONG way to go to catch up.

side note:
I put like 10 files in iCloud drive and it didn't sync all of them to my other devices. TEN STINKING FILES!! I think 9 made it and one was 'lost'. They were small files to, no more than 1MB in size. iCloud Drive is a complete and total failure in my eyes. Just as I knew it would be. Apple simply can not do CLOUD.

Huh. You made it all the way to this year? I lost this ability back in iOS 6 and have been unable to make it work right ever since then.

A shame, it was one of my favorite Mac-iPhone features.

Kind of surprised to see it's still working. I thought Apple had just stopped caring about it years ago.

Funny, because it works for me. And DropBox's web user interface is one of THE WORST I've ever seen. I remember when DropBox came out and people were wetting their pants over it, and I was thinking, "seriously"?

I have found iCloud to be wonderful for my purposes. Editing a document on one device and having it appear ready fo editing on another without the need to sync anything or save to a folder is fabulous.

Haters gonna hate. Works fine for me to.

iCloud is the biggest piece of garbage Apple has ever come up with,
followed closely by iTunes...

The biggest piece of garbage after MobileMe, which was the biggest piece of garbage after .Mac, which was the biggest piece of garbage after iTools.

Great niche for a silicon valley startup to come in an make a quick 4 billion.

That's a pretty amazing thing to say. Kinda dickish...

I ran into a friend of mine in Chicago and we were talking about random technology stuff, and he said that he still doesn't use 'The Cloud' for anything. This is a guy that has written books on the internet and networking and knows it a whole lot more than I do, and I don't consider myself a noob, but he doesn't get into that 'cloud stuff'. I'd consider his opinion over yours or any one else that wants to snark at people for not embracing having their personal stuff spread all over the internet.

He also laughed and said that he doesn't do online banking, and had a fight with his credit card company to get a card without the NFC technology in it. He said that people that didn't understand the internet and how intrinsically insecure it is love to poke him about being a Luddite and accusing him of being old fashioned. And yet I won't do online banking either and punched the chip out of my Amex card.

I'm happy for you, that you feel so comfortable with everything that you can trust a company you don't know with the security of everything you own on your computer. Happy for you. Respect us that want to still be here to say 'Told you so' when it backfires on you.

I'll stay behind my firewalls and play my games and wait to get thumped on the head by others who think I'd old fashioned too...

Oh, gotta go crank up the car... :D

iCloud on my iPhone 4 is unusable know because it doesn't support iCloud Drive.

Maybe it's time for you to upgrade your 4 year-old phone if you want it to continue functioning with an ever changing software world :)

There is nothing wrong with OneDrive, and it fact, it's quite good. I keep all my Office documents there, and access them across my Mac, iPhone and iPad. It's quite solid, and I also use their outlook.com mail as a secondary address, after my icloud.com address. it's a great product. But I also use iCloud for other things, and other types of files. I even have PDF's stored on Acrobat.com (though if they would build in iCloud support in the the iOS and Desktop versions of Adobe Reader/Acrobat, i'd store my PDF's there).

And I never ever had a problem with MobileMe. I always got my email, and the calendars and whatever other stuff worked. I was always surprised that others were having such issues. I guess I was just awfully damn lucky somehow... I've had some issues with iCloud email not arriving on time, and lately since I've been getting bombed with copious amounts of spam for some reason, am not happy that email rules don't seem to propagate through the system.

Any complicated software system is going to have *some* issues. I think Apple does a pretty good job, with the parts of their offerings that I use.

Beats the stuffing out of the Exchange server we have. It's older, and when I hooked it up to forward emails to my iPhone, it appears that the forward function happens BEFORE the spam filter functions. That was extra special, getting literally bombed with spam and infected crap and having only a tenth of that being anything 'clean', and probably a tenth of that being 'important'.

But as I said above: I don't use any more of Apple's cloud functions than iCloud for email.

But on a separate note: What's going on at Apple? It seems like there might be some kind of ideological battles going on there now. Either that, or they don't have the people to actually lead them to a better solution for their cloud agenda. It's odd that someone at Apple would admit this...
