I don't see any good reason why you can't opt in to iCloud Photo Library AND also be able sync albums/events from iPhoto and Aperture to your devices. It seems like a completely unnecessary restriction on Apple's part.

Someone here on this forum has a signature that sums this up perfectly.
Something along the lines of Apple using the Command key too often and not using the option key enough.

That's not completely surprising. The web browser version is really an embarrassment compared to the competition. Mail requires frequent reloads, notes multiplies notes, and the whole thing feels very flimsy.

Obviously. iCloud Photo Library is a complete mess. I won't bother with it. Just like Siri, Maps, and this piece of junk, Apple is in too many places and not good at any.

Seeing that the Photos app won't be available until 2015, it's obvious Apple is having problems.

I'm sticking with Dropbox.

It just works.

Apple clouds have been trouble since day one. mobile me, icloud whatever you call it apple has not been good at it.

Google definitely has the advantage in web integration

Wonderful...just WONDERFUL!
Just when I dump my PC and come over to the Mac side, all these problems come up.
WONDERFUL!

My biggest problem with the whole iCloud Photo Library is the "all or nothing" approach Apple seems to have towards it.

For example, enabling it will disable the ability to sync photos from Aperture or iPhoto to your phone. Completely.

It's as if Apple expects me to upload my entire photo collection (several hundred GB) to the cloud to be able to continue to do what I do now, which is view selected parts of my photo library on my phone.

Not. Bloody. Likely.

Photos are among the most important data I have. They are irreplaceable. A few are private and I don't want them on the Internet. Apple has also failed to tell us exactly how we are supposed to BACK UP the iCloud Photo Library. All indications point to the cloud library being authoritative. Does Apple really expect us to trust them with the ONLY authoritative copy of our photos? Are they insane?

They did not think this through. Hopefully the delays mean they ARE thinking it through now and will implement it properly. However, I'm not holding my breath and I'm keeping my options open for now.

How to back up? You have them on the hard drive of your Mac don't you? Running Time Machine? Another backup system? Even if it stores all your photos in the cloud, you will have still full resolution copies downloaded and stored on your Mac, just like you can have full resolution copies downloaded from iCloud Photo Library on your iPad or iPhone. You think Apple wouldn't let you download and keep full resolution copies on your Mac? Get real. So run time machine to back up your Mac's HD. Or use another back up program of your choice. Stop being so dramatic.

Dear Apple,

Buy a little company called Picturelife. These people and their software will solve all your problems and is exactly how photos should be done in the cloud.

No surprise really. Apple is primarily a design company. They are not a great software company. OS X is great due to its foundation on Unix. Otherwise, iTunes, maps, numbers, pages, cloud, iPhoto etc pretty much blow.

Great hardware though.

Some sorcerer out there put a curse on Apple's Online Services... It's really hilarious how long they've been struggling to get a halfway decent product up and going.

I have a deep feeling that tim can only operate the company with someone's guidance. I have seen the quality of both the software and the hardware going downhill these years starting from iPhone 5.

This icloud drive... I still cannot share a new page document created on my iPhone 6 to anyone!

Let's see:
- random photos missing from my photostream on other devices
- photos that reappear in photostreams after you delete them
- files in iCloud enabled apps that refuse to sync (stuck on Waiting forever)
- calendar invites that keep coming back after accepting or ignoring them
- iTunes match unreliable and slow (seems to be better with iTunes 12)
- unable to easily backup iCloud files
- reminders, contacts, calendar out of sync
- iMessages reported as Delivered while they are not
- FaceTime devices not ringing when you call them
- apps that rely on iCloud sync hang in ios 8
- slooowwwwwwww (yes, still as slow as iDisk or MobileMe)

not a bug but horrible design:
- the need to delete photos both in the camera roll and photo stream
- the iCloud website looking like a fisher price toy
- the app specific folders in iCloud drive
- the inability to share iWork documents in the two months leading up to the release of iOS 8. Because they were working on a new version. Really?? It didn't get a lot of attention, because, let's face it, nobody uses that feature.
- etc

Out of all the bugs you typed. I noticed these with my devices.
- files in iCloud enabled apps that refuse to sync (stuck on Waiting forever) [During the Yosemite Beta]
- photos that reappear in photostreams after you delete them
[sigh]
- the inability to share iWork documents in the two months leading up to the release of iOS 8. Because they were working on a new version. Really?? It didn't get a lot of attention, because, let's face it, nobody uses that feature.
[Amen dude]

We really do need another snow Leopard like upgrade soon

it's better than the current way.
if i need to delete a photo, i need to delete it from camera roll, photostream, recently deleted, and iPhoto (since it auto imports photostream)

explaining this to my mom is never going to happen.

Why would you need to delete a photo from Photostream and Recently Deleted? You don't have to worry about those; just let them auto-delete on their own timeline -- unless the photo is something really scandalous and you want to remove all traces of it immediately? (and how often does that scenario come up for your mom? ;) )

Yep. I've been saying this for a while. Steve was a visionary. Tim is not. He's more of a "let's look at the numbers" CEO. Jony can only do so much. Putting him in charge of UI was a mistake. Apple's icons still aren't uniform.

The Recently Deleted folder is a god-send. I don't know how many times I've accidentally deleted a photo. Now I have a safety net.

iCloud drive is not for "Syncing". It's simply online storage. Stop thinking of it as Dropbox and you'll be OK.

Which begs the question, why isn't iCloud more like Dropbox? Dropbox is an online, completely syncable extension of my harddrive. Why in the world does iCloud not function the same way? Is it so hard for Apple to not tightly control what users do?

Oh yeah, that's it. That's EXACTLY it. OS X is only good because of it's UNIX foundations. It also has nothing to do with it's UI/UX. Nooooo.

Give me a bloody break.

And Google is starting to really nail their products too. The new Maps, Gmail, and Calendar for Android are simply outstanding. Google Now on Android is brilliant. Apple is not doing so well in software and services these days. They're much sloppier than they used to be.

Well the fact is, Steve is dead (and it's his own fault he's dead too). People need to stop whining and MOVE ON.

Not to troll (honestly), but I've personally never been much of a fan of OS X -- for many reasons which I won't bother to list here. While previous versions of Mac OS obviously had their limitations, OS X has some fundamental differences that made it no longer feel like "Mac" to me (and, yes, I know it's been out for 13 years now) and also less pleasurable to use...

Many folks here living in the past (or at least that seems to be where their expectations for Apple are). Have you taken a good look around lately when go to the Apple Store. Look at the people there. The flotsam and jetsam of John and Jane Does gawking at the latest electronic marvel. Shelves full of (often garish looking) overpriced accessories.

Now let's add a sympathetic press corps slavishly ooing and aaahing at the bling bling version of the Apple Watch dangling from the wrist of fashion models while Bono, complete with his de rigeur sunglasses, apologizes for ramming the latest masterpiece down our throats whether we like it or not.

What does this have to do with iCloud ? Nothing. That's the point. Apple is too bloated to innovate any longer and without a once in a lifetime captain at the healm like Steve Jobs, is barreling down the path of every other large bloated company. " Hey look we just paid billions to buy a boatload of bass heavy designer headphones, and hey they even threw in a second rate streaming service to boot" !

Cheers

Except that I won't touch Google with a 10ft pole. I use YouTube (sadly, Google bought them), and the Google News page. That's it. No way in hell I'd use their email, or their search, or their maps, or Google Drive, etc., etc. Google's mantra used to be "Don't Be Evil" Well, not anymore. **** 'em. I can't stand that company. Their entire business model is spying and collecting data on people who use their products and selling it for advertising. Their email has ****ing AD's in it because computers read your mail. No. Thank. You.

There is a lot of backend architecture to have in place as well if Apple is going to do iCloud right. I have a feeling that the water may not be in the pool yet on that front.
