Frankly, I could care less if I have to scroll down while reading. I want the whole phone to be larger so we have larger text. Example: A webpage that does not have a mobile version, I have having to zoom in, and I do not like using the phone in landscape mode. Not to mention, the Landscape keyboard is awful, you cannot read anything while typing, and the phone being taller with make that even worse.

Who doesnt use their phone in landscape? I probabaly use my iphone in LS about 85 of the time. I have ipads, iphones and apple tv's but I am also thinking about switching over to SGS3. Its longer and wider...which in landscape will allow me to view more web browsing or texting than mu current iphone. I agree with the OP to a certain degree. I went to a Atlanta Braves game the other nite...had great seats...6 rows behind home plate...but EVERY one around me had an iphone...I was amazed that there wasnt any android phones. After this design, if its true, I think apple will lose some of the fan base. Im not getting any yournger and the text on these screens is almost too small now. I dont want to switch but this design may force me to.

Business Insider is a link-bait site and y'all got punked.

They do anything for clicks so hide your wives and your kids.

Debating over half an inch is the least of my problems ;)

If you do not count taking/viewing pictures and games... I bet I turn my iPhone to landscape less than once a week. I have two iPhones (work and personal), and I kill the battery on one of them everyday from heavy usage.

None of my friends type/text on the landscape keyboard. I personally do not like and have no use for the landscape keyboard. If it could turn it off, I would because I hate when I am trying to text someone while I am laying down the screen flips to landscape... God that is annoying. I would switch the silent On/Off button to lock rotation but I am not fond of having to toggle the volume up and down like on my older phones.

Like others, I've gotten a little weary with the iPhone 4/4S design and am really hoping that Apple pulls a rabbit out of it's hat with some sick new design or something. I'd actually prefer a larger screen (big hands) so that's what I'm hoping for here. If the leaked photos are the new iPhone then I'll probably upgrade to a SIII or Note or something like that.

One can still hope that these supposed leaked photos were "leaked" on purpose to throw everyone off. Guess we'll have to wait for September and see what the new iPhone has.

really screwed!!

Oh god. Enough with this innovation. Like anything in life the iOS started missing an incredible amount of things. Over time it's going to stabilize and slow down. When the 3G came out no one complained it was plastic, no one complained the 3GS was the same. Then the 4 came out and it was so different it blew minds, then came bandwagon apple users with the 4S too.. Now everyone is annoying. Your just foolish, they won't be screwed, not one bit. It's incredible people could complain this much over a phone. What more do you want. The 4 inch screen is there, it looks like an updated apple product, they changed the USB, added a bigger mic/speaker, bigger screen.. If you don't like it, dont get it. Sigh

totally disagree with your comment here.. we have high expectations from the iphone 5... they r turning out to be like nokia... just change a few things and update a little bit and done.. nah things wouldnt have been like this if our gr8 steve jobs would be still alive and running apple.

anyways i agree with other people on switching to another ecosystem most probably android because that is the one with more phones and designs.

Are you kidding? SJ will have been a major role in at LEAST the next two iPhone releases. I don't think you understand the timing in which new iPhones are released. So far it's been:

1 year - redesign
2nd Year - same exterior whilst upgrading internal hardware

And that process rotates and rotates around.

You know - I hate people that say "this wouldn't have happened if SJ was here". Apple still has nearly the exact same team as to when he was there. I think they know how to run things. Besides - Apple has not announced this new iPhone yet so you shouldn't be complaining.

i hope things are like what u say!! i really expect big things from apple!!

i have been a apple freak from past 12 yrs and wanna be for a very long time!!

I don't think Apple is screwed, they've got too many followers to have this rather mundane new iPhone make much difference either way.

And _that_ is the problem.

While it may very well sell in record numbers, like the iPhones that came before it, the fact is there are rumblings of discontent out there right now, that were not there, just two revisions ago.

All declines begin with a few users, then build momentum. Why take the chance even if only 1% of iPhone users defect to another platform? Why Apple fails to keep a close watch on what the users are saying is a mistake. To be in denial that it's not a mistake, is foolish.

People are very observant and we are all being watched by our friends and families. If the person that was once a hard core iPhone user, suddenly turns up using an Android, people take notice. It sends a very big signal out that perhaps iPhones are slipping.

Many who do make the switch and are intent on learning Android so they may enjoy the best experience, will discover the many wonderful features and advantages.

It's no different than those who have been lifetime PC users and switch to a Mac... there is a learning curve. If they take the time and be patient while learning how a Mac works, because it's different, suddenly they see why we love the Mac so much. Suddenly they are new advocates for the platform we love.

This is a very risky time for Apple. It may not appear like that to many, but users are smart, and not eager to put up with the same old phone (in terms of styling) year after year.

How the public receives this new iPhone promises to be interesting.

It may reveal a chink in Apple's armor, or it may not.

Only time will tell.

It won't sell because it looks too old?

If people buy expensive phones such as the S3 and iPhone 5 depending on aesthetics they should perhaps concentrate on buying, oh I don't know, art or flowers? Something where the visual aspects are the only attributes.

I really don't get how people think this looks like the 4/4S all over again. With the added length and 4" screen, this phone should look and feel quite different.

That said however, I have to also say that I don't quite understand this narrow screen aspect ratio. It just looks disharmonious to me. Not sure how that added length will be useful without any added width to go with it.

But then Apple aren't exactly fools when it comes to function and I trust they have something up their sleeve here that we've not been able to think of. After all, they wouldn't be Apple if they hadn't.

I love the iPhone & Apple but I think the OP is right, but for different reasons. The two-tone back is really really cheesy. It serves no purpose to keep bands at the top and bottom glass and only change the middle area. It looks retardedly bad, especially for Apple. They are way too graceful in their designs to mass produce such a crap looking back side to the new iPhone, so much so that I doubt it's true. Furthermore it NEEDS a wider screen, bottom line.

If it has two-tone back, and only a longer screen you can count me out. The keyboard is real bad, and two tone is cheesy.

How does it not look like the 4/4s? The only thing different is slightly slimmer, relocated headphone and a metal back. It's EXACTLY the same design, just a little longer. Who are you kidding?

I think for a normal phone screen bigger than about 4"/4.2" is far to big for normal use

This. This so much.

As an Apple fan myself, I want to other fans to voice any shortcomings (and there are plenty) of Apple so that they improve. Intellectual honesty goes a long way. When this doesn't happen, Apple gets away with virtually anything they want.

I agree. 4.3" is about as much phone as I need so if the next iPhone is 5 comes out with 4" then it's cool.

Macrumors is a great site but this place in no way mirrors the average consumer. Never take advice from a geek about potential sales. What a geek wants is often worlds apart from what a consumer wants.

The iPhone 6th generation is going to be big. Consumers won't walk in and say

"Well geez I was kind of hoping you'd change the interface so that I have to relearn it"

Im not getting all these people calling for a radical design change. The current design is the best looking on the market, nothing comes close.

Sometimes I get the feeling that if Apple radically change the design and then do hardly anything on the inside, people will more more happy. The current design is very good and doesn't need changing massively at all, as long as they significantly upgrade the hardware and have a slightly bigger screen I will be happy.

Just because the design is similar doesn't mean the phone will be a failure, Aston Martin cars all look the same, but you don't see people moaning about them do you?

If these leaks that have come out had a big design change, everyone will be jizzing all over the place, even without knowing what the hardware is like or how good the phone actually is, i don't get it.

For me the 4S is about as good looking as a phone can be, and the added length + other small changes are sufficient updates for the phone to have a new enough feel. What I mean is that I would never refrain from buying it on the basis that it looked too much like the old iPhones. Given that I love the current 4/4S design, I'm not asking for a huge revamp.

Since you're asking for bigger changes, are you then unhappy with the way the 4/4S look? And how would you like the iPhone 5 to look?

Oh please, a Henry Blodget link? That dude is nothing more than a fraudulent jackass with an insatiable desire to be call "First!" for Apple's doom & gloom. He's done it over & over again.

-Will

P.S. He also finished second, only to Mike Daisey, for The Macalope's "Fools of the Year" Award.

Agreed. Also, Blodget's own bloggers on Business Insider are calling him out for this poorly-researched piece:

If Apple Releases This iPhone 5 Design, It's Definitely NOT Screwed

except 4" is still small, and I don't see why Apple is so catering to men with small hands.

Except that half the population are women and half of the men are not sausage fingered giants plus i do not want to walk around with a "manbag" just to carry my phone.
The iPad mini sounds more like the tool for you.
Edit/afterthought; not sure i want a phone with an operating system called Marmite sandwich or whatever its called

If you want to talk about an Apple product that's dead in the water in terms of innovation, let's talk about OS X. But I suppose that's for a different thread.

The iPhone 4/4S design is stunning, I still absolutely love it. When you hold it it feels really solid, though I will admit I am a fan of curved backplates. I would have liked the screen to be wider as well as longer. I Curved aluminium like on the iPad would be amazing though.
