do you really think you'll take a $600 loss on it in one year? Especially for the black SS, which I doubt will be as abundant as the sport or SS?

if you buy the black SS for $1100 now, and sell in a year for $850 (assuming they do once per year updates), that's about $21/month loss. If you buy the sport now for $350 and sell for $230 in a year that's a $10/month loss. So basically, you're paying $10 per month difference in loss to have the one you actually want vs settling for the sport. For me, I'd rather have the nicer looking one if I'm going to have one at all.

(Of course, those numbers for loss are all made up. There might be more or less of a loss of value after one year. We won't know until that time comes)

Who is going to buy a first gen smart watch for $850? People are forgetting that this is a wearable that will eventually get scratched and banged around. It's not a iPhone that you can slap a otterbox case on. And plus you don't have a warranty (unless you waste even more money).
And when the aftermarket starts making gold replica cases and bands for $50 people will want to buy the cheapest model they can find.

For me:

Before reviews: 42mm Stainless Steel w/ black leather loop
After reviews: 42mm Space Grey Aluminium Sports

Why?

  • Disliked the look of the leather loop having seen it in The Verge's video review
  • Reviews brought me down to earth a bit - while I originally thought spending the extra cash on nicer materials would be appropriate for something I wear on my wrist everyday, from a technical/functional perspective the watch does seem to require some evolution to make it shine, and I think that investment may be better served in a year or two
  • I didn't like the look of the Stainless Steel either - not nearly as nice as the Apple website makes it look and smudges are apparant
  • By buying the sports model, I can afford to buy my wife one too! She's said ok, so we'll both have one which will make it a bit more enjoyable to use as we can get more use of the watch-only features

No as I don't rely on others for my life choices.....I'm an adult who knows what I want and I get it. Don't need others to make up my mind for me.... give it a shot you'll probably be happier for it.

Huge Apple fan but I cannot understand the point of this.

It is an expensive way to see who's texted you. . .and to decide whether or not to get out your phone to reply anyway.

Just get out your phone. . .and reply or not.

I've seen reviews 'saved me fumbling around for my phone'. . . .who in the name of the sweet lord FUMBLES around for their phone. It's in my pocket. Always. Always in my left pocket. No fumbling at all. Just reach in. . .pull it out. Reply to texts etc.

Waste of time and money.
Ummmmm some of us have jobs that entail carrying around items that may preclude us from grabbing our phones..... Anywho you don't need to worry yourself about why others are getting the watch, just don't get one and move on with your life.

Gonna chime in...I wanted the SS w/ classic buckle or black sport band, now I'm going for silver aluminum sport.

I want it more to play with/get adjusted to for when Apple inevitably releases a more polished version.

I think that's a better strategy. You and your wife could have some funs with the new devices together. For me, the review doesn't change anything. I still go for SS and white rubber band. (Gruber called it the best rubber band he wore ha ha)

One thing that the reviews DO change me though is now instead of contemplating buying another rubber band, I'm considering buying link bracelet for my next band. It's so cool.

The link band does look really stylish. A bit too masculine for my taste and my build. But if I were a guy or Christy Turlington I'd get it. Apple was wise to bring her on board. She makes everything look good and she's got a lot going for her besides her looks.

None of the reviews made me want the watch any less. It did however make me wonder whether or not I should buy one for my partner.

I'm the resident tech enthusiast in the household and always want the latest and greatest gadgets to play with. He enjoys the tech and happily uses it but he's not that interested in something just because it's new. He's been on the fence whenever I've asked him if he wanted the Apple Watch but I was planning on getting him one anyways, figuring he would be jealous when he saw mine and also (somewhat selfishly) so I would have someone to use the digital touch features with.

After reading all of the reviews the main theme seems to be that it's not for everyone. I know without a doubt I will enjoy the watch purely for the fact that it's like Inspector Gadget come to life. It's a bit of an indulgence since you can mostly use your iPhone to do whatever the Apple Watch does so I don't know if my partner will appreciate it as much as I would. I may just pre-order him one and return it if he doesn't end up wanting one.

The Milanese band is not as beautiful as it is in the official Apple shots, so now I'm leaning more towards a leather band.

Before SS with black sports band
Now sports with blue sports band plus extra black sports band

Because it feels to much like a first generation product that I won't use 5 years from now.

Carrying around items with two hands? So you wouldn't be able to look at your watch?

Or carrying items around with one hand. . .so you can reach for your phone.

You're going to have to go for your phone any way to respond to the text. Voice to text dictation is unwieldy unless you're saying 'Yes' or something similar. What about when it gets a word wrong . . .or a sentence wrong.. you manually correct it with the keyboard.

In its current form, the Apple Watch is just a bizarre pointless creation for anyone looking objectively. Gen 2 and Gen 3 could be special if they become something more than a 'pre check your phone checker'.

Hating that everyone is now moving to the Sport version.

Why do you care what others buy?

Why do you care what others buy?

Because people who before yesterday had no problems dropping extra cash on the SS version now decide that they now want to get the Sport means it could potentially decrease my chances of getting the Watch that I want on the 24th.

The reviews were overall very positive for a 1st gen product. Nothing has changed my mind as I had realistic expectations to begin with. It will be fun watching the software and apps mature over the next year.

As for the possible scratching - people have been coping with scratches on Rolexes that cost 10 or 20 times as much for decades, so I think I'll somehow find it in me to deal with it. Without putting a bloody case on it. Ultimately it will be the little nicks and scratches that make it uniquely mine.

If the reviews are prompting you to get the Sport version instead, you have to ask yourself why. Nothing has changed. Now in addition to having lower expectations, you're also dealing with materials you didn't really want.

This isn't a need. It's about being happy with a product. If the SS and a better band will make you more happy, then get it. It doesn't matter if the watch itself will need updates. It still needs to look good or tolerable even.

Just to satisfy my love of gadgets, I was going to wait a few months until they went on clearance for $99. Any model. Now I'm not sure I even want one.

There are some nice band-style alternatives in the $150-$200 price range that are looking much, much closer to what I want. One of those would do me for a year or two while Apple sorts itself out.

Fair point. After an initial wobble I'm sticking with SS but I'm ditching the black leather loop. It did not look good (to me).

Fair enough. I'm actually going from SS with classic leather to thinking about not getting it all. Concerns about performance are real but buying the base version instead would just, in a way, ensure you're not going to be happy post purchase.

It's either all in or not bothering with it.

Why do you care what others buy?

If an item is light enough for you to flip your arm around to bring up the Apple Watch screen. . . Then it's light enough to get your phone out.

I'll get Apple Watch when it's good.
You may enjoy seeing who's texted you without needing to get your phone out but please don't try and justify it in this way as your reason 'I need one because I carry items all day' is plain weird.

Check your watch while carrying your heavy item. And then what? Set down the item and get out your phone? Juggle the heavy item in your arms while holding the watch close to your face? Surely less hassle to get out your phone.

The whole thing is frankly bizarre!

He didn't have much credibility with me to start with given his pro apple stance. This only reinforces that view.

So you think he's lying? Or purposely underused the watch to make battery life look better?
