Ok, I get it. So because I was looking at two models and decided on the cheaper one this generation, I'm the jerk because I'm taking a unit from some guy that can only afford the Sport model?

I can't even...

You buy what you want. I'll buy what I want. Good day, sir!

Ok guys time to move on. Please!

P.S. No one person's choice is more or less valid than someone else's, regardless of how many times they did or didn't change their mind.

Exactly.

Just goes to show that people give it the billy big balls saying that they are going to lay down the cash for an expensive model only to then backtrack afterwards.

You might feel you have to call me a dick, but I've never wavered from buying the Sport model the entire time.

You seemingly have the cash available to you that you were going to buy the SS version with link band, to now potentially deny someone the watch they actually wanted.

I think this was uncalled for to be honest. You can't begrudge someones choice or them changing their mind because it might affect your choice.

That said I think your'e taking what was said way too personally. Just choose and buy the model you want and don't worry about what other people say or think about your choice or decision. Life is too short to worry about such things especially on an internet forum.

Once I saw the Milanese loop in the review videos it looked cheap. More like a chain than a bracelet. So I've now decided for the sport model in space grey with the black band.

If you watch the Verge review; the AW takes two hands to use. The hand with the watch has to be lifted up and turned towards the user; the other hand to push the button or swipe the screen. He then shows how he can read and respond to messages on his iPhone with one hand. So the AW is LESS convenient to use than the iPhone.

Yikes. You have a very good point.

For anything other than telling the time or checking notifications, you can't interact with the watch one-handed like you can with an iPhone.

OTOH, you can do everything one-handed on a phone. Everything.

Dear oh dear, really??

----------

How would spending more on an Apple Watch give you more 'actual usage'?

Anyone buying a model above the Sport is doing it for vanity reasons. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but there can't be any other reason as they do the exact same thing.

Nail. On. Head.

It's the KNOWING you need to respond to or ignore the notification that is key and most of the reason why you're even wearing the Watch.

You won't know whether you need to pull that phone out or not unless you've seen a quick preview via the Watch.

You're arguing about what's more convenient to respond with. That's a judgement call. I'm sure "ok" is a preset reply. That could work. If you know you need something more, then it's off to the iphone.

This is where Siri could come in handy or just be disappointing and useless altogether vs grabbing your iphone.

But you still need to use your other hand to respond with the OK message or push the button to respond with Siri.

----------

No, I'm saying it is ridiculous not to qualify that statement, as neither is more convenient than the other at "everything."

Checking the time and glancing at notifications is more convenient on the Watch, typing a text message or reading email is more convenient on the iPhone. I've carried a phone that displays the time for 20 years and still worn a watch during that time because it is more convenient to look at my wrist when I want to know the time than it is to pull anything out of my pocket.

But you still need to use your other hand to clear the notification or scroll through multiple notifications. And you still have to pull out the phone for the "important" notifications you "have to" respond to. I can look, clear, and respond to notifications with one hand on my phone.

Haven't changed my mind one bit. I'm buying two SS.... one 42mm with classic leather band and one 38mm with the black modern buckle.

I'll buy it,try it for myself and see if I like it. I'll make my own decisions.

If anything these reviews only enforced me not getting the sport watch. A lot of these guys were in suits and nice attire. Making me think the sport model won't look as nice when I'm wearing a suit or dressed up. I like the SS look with a nicer band while dressed up. Although I will get a sport band too for the gym.
For me, personally, appearance is as important as functionality on something I wear everyday.
Interesting point. My husband works in a casual office and rarely has to wear suits. So he's comfortable getting a Sport and always was. I think he never cared all that much and was just going to copy whatever I decided anyway, to be honest. He's only getting one to keep me company, it seems.

Sister-in-law loves the sporty look and lifestyle and fell in love with the Sport model immediately and never gave the others a second look. I work outdoors. I'm not the world's biggest fan of plastic/rubber bands but it was clearly always going to be part of my choice eventually. At least the reviews speak well of it.

Enjoy your new watch when it arrives!

****My main qualm about the Sport was never about the aluminum, really...because I am excited about the lightness and matte finish.

I liked the idea of the zirconium ceramic backing on the SS and I loved the look of the enameled dot on the crown (which some people hate, but I love enameled costume jewelry). If I have a last minute change of heart back to the heavier SS, it will be over something as stupid as that.

I wasn't going to get the watch. When it was announced last year I was like nope, I'm passing. But as time as moved on and my work allows me to have new gadgets, they are footing the bill for the space grey 399.99 edition and I'll chip in the 149.99 for the loop. All the reviews are missing the point of this gadget not to mention all the stuff they say that is negative can easily be fixed with firmware updates. I have no doubt after a month or so Apple is going to release an update based on feedback, probably will be sooner then that.

Went ahead and purchased a bumper for 20.00 for the watch and preordered a stand already. Just playing the waiting game today until preorders hit this evening/morning. :)

For me:

Before reviews: 42mm Stainless Steel w/ black leather loop
After reviews: 42mm Space Grey Aluminium Sports

Why?

  • Disliked the look of the leather loop having seen it in The Verge's video review
  • Reviews brought me down to earth a bit - while I originally thought spending the extra cash on nicer materials would be appropriate for something I wear on my wrist everyday, from a technical/functional perspective the watch does seem to require some evolution to make it shine, and I think that investment may be better served in a year or two
  • I didn't like the look of the Stainless Steel either - not nearly as nice as the Apple website makes it look and smudges are apparant
  • By buying the sports model, I can afford to buy my wife one too! She's said ok, so we'll both have one which will make it a bit more enjoyable to use as we can get more use of the watch-only features

Your post sums up my thoughts exactly. Black Sport for now and SS most likely for a future version. Money isn't an issue but I don't want to waste it either on something that will be demonstrably better in the near future.

I plan on wearing the watch almost exclusively when I'm in my office and will stick to my Rolex or Panerai when I'm at home or travelling. We'll see which I choose for going out based on my experiences at work.

Before reviews: I wasn't sure I wanted one
After reviews: I definitely don't need one, I certainly won't buy one now, but maybe later.

I've never seen someone post and obsess so much over a product they're NOT getting.
I'm interested in the second gen model_if_it has a compelling set of features. But if you had read my posts you'd already know that.

Perhaps you have an intrinsic need to focus on other people's business to make up for something lacking in your life...good luck with that.

Says the guy who has informed us dozens of times that he's not getting the watch but back-handedly rips on people who are buying it. I can't make up this kind of irony.

Im still trying to justify the need for a smartwatch lol. I am a serious tech person who always gets the latest and greatest but this smart watch fad I am not 100% on board with. I mostly think people are going crazy just because its something that's being made by Apple. lol

I've gone from maybe Sports to definitely SS with link once I saw the reviews-it looked AMAZING. It's everything I expected it to be, 1st gen flaws and all IE I don't need it, but would like it and can afford it.

Can't wait to slap it on my wrist.

I think the "buy the one you like best and decide for yourself" route is the prudent one.

I'm sure that if I buy a SS with a nice band and I'm not satisfied, I can return it and pick up a sport or wait until gen 2 or something. Why not get the one you really wanted and see if it suits your needs?

I don't get the jumping to a sport model before even trying out the watch thing from people who really wanted SS because they're very different-looking products.

I don't trust reviewers to make my purchase decisions.

I've decided that yes, the 38mm is for men so all you guys, be sure to order the 42mm.

Honestly, I've been flip flopping. It sounds like I will buy it but I'm still not sure if I'm buying the sport or the SS. The lightness of the sport makes me want to go that route but I do like shiny.

I'm in a similar mind set as you. Yet what's interesting with the watch that didn't exist with the original iPad is rather odd.

In the buildup to iPad sales I noticed a tremendous buzz about it at work where in my building alone we have hundreds of hi-tech employees. Even the ladies were very interested. It seemed like everyone was pre-ordering since we love Apple products. Everyone has lots of money to spend so it was an easy choice.

This time, the watch has a lack of buzz. Frankly to be honest there's almost no buzz. Not even my fellow engineers want one. We're all taking a wait and see approach.

Also those who_do_ like the idea of a smartwatch already have watches like LG, Moto, Pebble that they are very satisfied with. Not everyone wants a ton of features. Just a few seems to be preferred.

This is totally accurate. I think the majority of the 'buzz' is only on forums. In my office of software folks, there's almost no buzz and very little discussion. Besides me, only one other person is really excited about it, and I'm older (44) than most in this office.

I don't think we'll see the same lines or website crashing issues we had with the iPad and definitely not like a new iPhone, but at the same time, I'm still waking up at 2 am CST to order 'just in case'.

I see this like the first iPhone release. So many, myself included, wanted to wait and see it first. Then once it was seen and observed, it caught on fire. I think the watch will too… not to iPhone levels of fire, but it will gain momentum significantly after people get to see them, feel them, and see their friends with them.

Yeah I know when the iPhone 6 series was dropping that's all your heard in my office and there was a slight buzz around and talks about it but this watch is extremely quiet. I know that doesn't mean it will not sell well but of course the hype is going to be in the Apple forums lol. Thats what its here for but I am still on the fence about ordering it myself because im trying to figure out the purpose of it besides 1. Saying you have one and 2. Its a new Apple product that everyone wants just because Apple is making it. I really cant justify spending $350+ on something that I will still mostly have to pull my phone out for. But some strange tech feeling in my body wants to get it...idk. lol

This isn't true. You can one-hand use the watch if you use your nose to touch the display.

In various limb-limited situations (usually when it's below zero Fahrenheit at the bus stop), I have totally used my nose to tap something important on my iPhone.

I agree, as we all are aware of, this is a relatively new category, and Apple's first attempt. Known for very good products that are generally very well thought out, Apple still has a challenge on their hands.

I also think if they had better self control when it comes to bragging about their past performance and then over hyping the upcoming one, people's expectations would be more reasonable which is a
win/win for everyone.

In this case only time will tell.

Very well said!

I will be the first to admit that I too feel that rather difficult to describe desire for the product after years and years of buying Apple computers, laptops, pads and phones.

One way to convey the feeling is it's a big departure to find a potentially significant future Apple product that at this moment simply doesn't appeal to me.

Your husband sound like a good guy. funny enough, the 38mm SS is a surprise wedding gift for my fiancée. I hope she loves it.

That's what's nice about the different collections. There's something for everyone. So your sister-in-law will be happy and you no matter which one you choose. I totally forgot about the weight difference between the SS and sport. Valid point

Yes! The enamel! Great attention to detail.... I personally like it.

No matter which one you choose, enjoy your watch! I'm wishing us both luck at getting the ones we want at pre-order time! Good luck! :)
