lol. Oh wait, You’re not actually getting more usable display. Nor a true e2e screen.
Just like every other edge to edge phone right. You can always get a S8 which has the icons on the usuable screen under the sensors. The sensors have to be there. So why not put all of the other info next to them and not take up more valuable screen real estate. Besides which, when Apple gets rid of the lightning port, you need a way to tell the top of the phone.

The notch is extremely distracting to me. No home button is the F-U on the cake. No thx. Waiting for the iPhone X "S" model next year.

I just checked out the Samsung 8 today at the Verizon store and I must say it made me dislike the notch even more 🙁

I’m not switching anytime soon but I also checked out the s8’s at bestbuy and felt the same way, it’s aesthetically a much nicer phone. No notch and no camera hump.

Whether you like it or not it’s not good design which is what Apple used to be known for. It doesn’t make the user experience better either.

The front of the Samsung S8 looks like a beautiful evolution of the iPhone line and the front of the iPhone X looks like an amateurish Samsung design choice. It's freaking Bizarroland.

Apple's stated design intention is that the phone "disappears into the experience". You know what disappears? Tiny bevels like on the S8 top and bottom. The notch does the opposite of disappear - it covers part of the thing you're looking at. Images, videos, webpages... these are compositions. The notch breaks compositional symmetry.

Someone referred to bezels as "outdated".

Not sure what that means. The form follows function. It exemplifies good industrial design in all aspects.

I have a Galaxy S8+, and yes the design is wonderful and it's aesthetically pleasing, but you can tell there are aspects to it where function was shoehorned into form. Rather than working backwards from the customer, Samsung had this freaking incredible display that is the best in the business, and molded function around it.

Apple is falling into the same trap, but trying to force iconic status and branding with a notch. The home button wasn't there to be iconic, it just turned out that way. That's the trademark of good design.

I should mention that as much as I hate the incredibly tacky notch, it's not likely to be a deal breaker for me. I'm fully entrenched in the Apple ecosystem and having a little kid, I value the camera upgrade more than anything.

I’m in the same boat. Hate the notch, but not going to switch to Android for it. Ideal situation would be if Apple gave users a software option to go notchless.

Don't think it really matters. Remember people bit%^ing about the antenna bands - still there. Remember people bi&^%ing about the camera that sticks out - still there. Everyone forgets and it becomes the norm. Get used to the notch. Its their new trademark and a way for other people to know you have a $1200.00 phone. You should embrace it.

At least, don't use the ears as viewable real estate when displaying content. In landscape mode, use the ears for another function like page up / page down scrolling. Or volume/display brightness when viewing videos. Let us customize the ears with functions we choose.

The notch is different. It actually impacts the basic interaction with the product which is viewing content. And if you “shrink” the videos so the notch isn’t covering the video then it adds 2 completely useless bars on the left and right of the videos.

It really is a strange design.

Oh. I know. I get it. Im saying that people complaining about the notch then buying it, wont change anything. Heck. Some people are already accepting and embracing it. Just like Apple knows they will do.

I don’t really understand why this is the retort whenever someone has a critique of a product.

For years, people criticized the iPhone because it had bezels, and they eventually got what they wanted (I guess?) Should they have just said nothing?

For years, people criticized Apple for not having a true HD display. Should they have just “not bought iPhones”?

Apple is saying that this is going to be the future of iPhone design for the next ten years. And it’s terrible. So no, as someone who has used iPhones for the last ten years, as someone who enjoys iOS, for someone who doesn’t care for android, I’m not going to simply quietly move along. Sorry if that bugs you.

Haha, actually yes. You do more by not buying than you do complaining to forums (not that there is anything wrong with that part, it's good to have these discussions). Vote with your wallet.

Vote with your wallet.

Apple, Samsung and others are not always going to design products that appeal to every single consumer. And I think it is very arrogant to contact Apple demanding that they do something about the design of the phone just announced, so that those who don't like the notch can have their way.

If we were talking about contacting Apple about a hardware defect, safety hazard or deceptive advertising, I would be all for contacting Apple and other appropriate entries.

As it stands, we are talking about a difference in design philosophy between Apple and those who can't stand the notch. And instead of accepting that Apple has decided to go a different direction than some want, (read: demand) some here think it is prudent to try and force Apple to somehow back down, admit that they are sorry for not catering to everyones' whims, and suddenly change course and appease those who aren't happy.

Its not Apple's job to appease every consumer. Apple doesn't build 'anything the customer wants' products. It is Apple's job to build a quality product that it believes will deliver the best user experience for the consumer with the expectations of Tim Cook and others at Apple. And if one doesn't like the design direction of Apple, one can keep what one has, buy an Apple product that one likes, or look elsewhere.

The way a lot of people around here are acting lately, you would think we have been talking about life and death decisions, instead of a phone.

Very well said. Don't like, don't buy. Simplest way to put it.

It’s really not that simple. You can still dislike some aspect of a product and still consider it to be the best option available.

If you prefer iOS over android then “voting with your wallet” means that you still end up buying an iPhone.

And again, Apple over the years has changed things that people complained about. They didn’t need a mass exodus of customers to do that.

I got ya, but I still feel like it's pretty straightforward. I think people feel somewhat entitled, like Apple should design products around them specifically. You can't please everyone. I mean they certainly give options at all different sizes and price points. If you like the product, you buy it. If you don't, you don't buy it.

I think the point is, to notch defenders, given the choice or if you were to look at screen designs or design one yourself, you’d probably leave the notch out.

Whether or not you’ll still buy the iPhone is another conversation.

I just wrote them and let them know how much I like the notch. I seriously do like it. It's an amazing combination of design+branding. Who wants a phone that looks like a Samsung clone like the picture you posted. Think different 🙂

If i had the choice of an all black bar on the top vs the notch, id take the notch

Again, if Samsung came with a phone with this notch, macrumors would have a sarcastic laugh and taking the piss out of it.

But hey, Apple!

You people who don't mind the notch on the X, know this...but mostlikely will not admit 😉

Don't really like the notch, but along with what someone else has stated, I'm in too deep to abandon iOS for Android because of something that isn't aesthetically pleasing.

That's cool. Still is poor design.

Literally takes away from the amount of screen that can present content in a way that is was supposed to be presented.

Technically the screen is 5.8" but a small portion of that screen is less useful than any mobile phone that doesn't have a notch yet it's marketed as a selling point.
