In my opinion the notch was well thought. Apple is not dumb. It's a trademark like the home button was before. The iPhone X can directly be recognised as an apple phone with the help of the notch.

Otherwise it would look like an android one if you see only the display.

You know what's instantly recognizable? The Pontiac Aztec. The Microsoft Zune. Facial tattoos. Trump's and Kim Jong Un's hairstyles.

Android phones have poached Apple's design aesthetic to the point where Apple wants to distinguish itself - I get that. But if you have to embrace bad design in order to set yourself apart, then you have lost the plot. Prove that you are great engineers and find a better way to make your product stand out. And if you can't, then do what you stated in your iPhone X mission statement and let the phone disappear into the experience.

I think that's still a preferred method. But I think you have those who to try rationalize and decide if they actually need or want the latest device.
This whole thread is about trying to get Apple to change the phone into what they want it to be/think it should be rather than decided whether they want or need the product for what it is.

Which is why I responded to your post stating that it's still a preferred method of those who choose to not purchase a product based if they don't like it. But then back to my point, you have those two are trying to rationalize if they actually need or want this device based off what they claim is a design flaw with the notch or simply ignore it for what it is.

Whatever happened to just not buying a product if you don’t like it?

Whatever happened to using forums to express opinions and encourage giving feedback to companies about what you like and what you don't like? The title of this thread is "If you don't like the notch...". It's meant for people who don't like it. What is strange is that people like you and other dude bros feel compelled to contribute the utterly vapid "don't like it, don't buy it" argument. It is as much of a garbage sentiment as responding to any criticism of your government with "if you don't like it, then you git out." All you are saying is "shut up". How about you just ignore threads that don't interest you?

Apple has made a cynical and desperate move by embracing bad design in order to differentiate themselves from competitors who have poached their aesthetic for years. In the very least, that is a very interesting story, particularly in contrast to what differentiated Apple in the past to get to this point. This is the company that brought beautiful typeface to computing and it's like they are now releasing an OS based on Comic Sans in order to differentiate themselves. Let us talk about it without your non-contribution and if you don't care about bad design and poor taste, then move on. Go put your Zune tunes on, get into your Pontiac Aztec, and drive off.

Oh, and by the way, smart companies pay attention to feedback and public shaming. It's why they have things like surveys, focus groups, and feedback forms.

Nobody needs any iPhone period. There are plenty of other options. Those of us heavily invested in Apple's ecosystem have every right to want to see Apple make good choices.

That fact that you are referring to your opinions about ‘bad choices’ and ‘bad designs’ as though they are fact tells me everything I need to know!

Obscuring part of the displayed image to achieve partial edge-to-edge is bad design. That you can't see it tells me everything I need to know.

If they did follow your design suggestion, you probably would have made a thread complaining about why they didn't use the full size of the screen

Every reporter who tried the phone said that while you always know the notch is there it's something that you get used to after actually using the phone. You're only looking at mockups so you have no way of judging the actual experience.

try it ...........you'll like it

Until we actually put this iPhone through all the motions it's hard to say whether it's s good design or not. We'll all know soon enough

try this next time you're watching your favorite TV show/movie.

Grab an empty soda bottle, sit down on your couch in front of the TV. Lay down the empty bottle on the table between you and the TV. But make sure the bottle is in sight between you and the TV

Enjoy your favorite TV show/movie......and the bottle ( = iPhone X notch ) on the table!

Because that's what opinions are, that they can openly state something they believe is a bad choice or bad design, am I right? You seem to be dismissive of the fact that others have opinions on the iPhone, where as you stated, "you don't like it you don't buy it", it goes beyond that mindset that you fail to understand others viewpoints or just don't care too.

In your opinion! I don’t like the notch or the iPhone X in general. But stating your opinion as fact and demanding Apple change the design is just childish and arrogant.
People will speak with their money, if it sells badly I’m sure Apple will rethink the design next year. But I have a feeling it’ll sell just fine as it is...

As an adult who communicates regularly with adults, I don't feel the need to package my every opinion with "in my opinion..." and "this is just an opinion, but..." because sane adults can tell the difference. Clearly you can too, so it's really confusing why you have to keep pointing it out like a toddler pointing out fire trucks. Maybe you just learned the difference.

I'll clear this up for you since you're having trouble: the thing I am referring to is about violating the most basic design standards by obscuring part of the image. These standards exist for good reason. Write a melody and then harmonize it with a bunch of parallel 5ths. It will sound like crap because you have broken a basic standard in music theory. Or create a home where secondary mass overwhelms primary mass. Violates basic architectural standards and looks like crap. Put up a support beam that partially blocks a doorway. Violates basic architectural standards. Put a notch in a display that partially obscures the image. Violates the most basic standards of image framing and presentation.

You can argue all you want and call these basic standards "opinions", but you are only revealing your own lack of taste. You're out of your depth here. But maybe you'll like the new Apple TV:

i have no issue with the notch. in all fairness apple really couldn't win with this anyway.. if they had left that whole area as black space on the front of the phone people would have complained it was not really edge to edge or just looked exactly like the samsung s8.

i also see people complaining that if you change content to not show the notch you end up with black bars on both sides of the image.. surely this is exactly what would have happened if apple had not put the notch in and left that area as just blank space as they would have had to keep the aspect ratio the same so the phone would have been a slightly different shape in some way.

Thank you. Your pretentious comparisons and condescending attitude have really cleared this up for me. Thank you for educating me out of my toddler-like behaviour. I now realise the iPhone X is terrible in every way and I’m sure it will be a humongous flop when it is released later in the year. Thanks again for taking time out of your day to explain all this to me.

Apple in some cases is a different Apple, in the past all the time we had design over function, now we have function over design
