Thank you. Your pretentious comparisons and condescending attitude have really cleared this up for me. Thank you for educating me out of my toddler-like behaviour. I now realise the iPhone X is terrible in every way and I’m sure it will be a humongous flop when it is released later in the year. Thanks again for taking time out of your day to explain all this to me.

The iPhone X is not terrible in every way. Just in one way. But your switch to passive-aggressive posturing does not make you seem less immature.

No one is forcing you to buy it.. if you don't like it, buy a note 8. No notch!

Wow, I hadn't considered that. Great idea!

Truthfully, I think some valid points were addressed to you, and you don't want to acknowledge for what they're worth. That's understandable, but why respond without backing up what you're saying with facts instead of a Post that doesn't offer anything Substantial. You could simply refute the facts behind the iPhone notch why it does not align with your own views as to why.

Because the whole point of my input into this discussion is there is no ‘facts’ to discuss. It’s a matter of opinion and taste. The notch is there and Apple have designed the software to accommodate it. It’s not going to change, it’s not going anywhere. Don’t like it don’t buy it. I didn’t address most of his points because they were ridiculous, photoshopping a notch onto a tv? Something that’s sole purpose is to watch video content. That’s just one minor thing that not even everybody does on their iPhones. The notch won’t be in the way of 90%+ of most people’s day to day iPhone usage.
People are latching onto full screen video content and landscape web browsing in the argument against the notch like that’s all people use their iPhones for. I don’t know anyone who browses in landscape, and watching video isn’t a great experience on a device that size with or without the notch, so I don’t really see that it’s a big deal. I don’t think it will be for most people outside of this forum.

It’s really not that simple. You can still dislike some aspect of a product and still consider it to be the best option available.

If you prefer iOS over android then “voting with your wallet” means that you still end up buying an iPhone.

And again, Apple over the years has changed things that people complained about. They didn’t need a mass exodus of customers to do that.

What nonsense is this.

In this case you actually have an alternative 'best option' that is identical yet without the notch. It's called the iphone 8 / 8+. Why people hating the notch of the X yet still feel the need to buy one is truely beyond me.

I'm probably one of the few peope that likes the notch. I like phones to be symmetrical but I also want to be able to quickly see what's top and bottom side. Having a home button and a speaker grille made for easy orientation. Now, with the notch the screen is still symmetrical in its outer contour but the notch gives it orientation.

What I dislike about current phones like the galaxy/note8 is that with the removal of the home button you cannot see what's top and down anymore.

I’m not buying the X. I have an 8+. And the only nonsense here is that you’re saying a 5.8 inch OLED display is identical to a 5.5 inch LCD display.

The problem is that since Apple has stated that this is the future of all iPhones for the next decade, there won’t even be this type of “choice” in a few years.

You like the notch. Fine, but can you honestly say that the X would be less appealing to you without it?

I’m not sure how to feel about the notch, but even if I liked it I still wouldn’t get it. I saw the price and was just like “nope nope nope”

$1600 or something in Australia. I’ll just get the 8+. Good enough for me!

This shows (on the right) a far better alternative:

The right one is better design not only because it frames the usable area better and hides the notch but also because on an OLED it could save a little bit of battery by having several pixels turned off.

I really don't know what has happened with Apple. Have they started letting the iTunes/App Store team do design on other things?

What’s with everyone saying don’t buy it if you don’t like it? If you’re an Apple shareholder you should absolutely voice your opinion and let the company know you aren’t happy.

With that said, the notch is ugly. I have no clue why people defend it. It’s more like the people are tired of people complaining and would rather not hear it but no matter how you spin, the notch is not beautiful.

I think it’s kind of cute and iconic looking when the IPhone X is off. But it does intrude on the immersive experience Jony says Apple is going for when the phone is on and running.

So I have the weird desire to see it kept, but completely mitigated in software.

That is indeed a weird desire! I still think they'll find a way to get rid of it by the third iteration.

The notch is ugly and the vertical camera bump is ugly. But it’s still the best iPhone that you can buy. What’s an iPhone fan supposed to do? Hint: buy the X.

Sometimes users can't have everything they want in the modern smart phone world. I see the best of both worlds with android and iOS. There is great features and hardware with Samsung and Apple, but we make sacrifices for what we want to choose based on operating platform.

I think what I should have said is that I don’t mind that it exists. And it looks interesting when the phone is off and in vertical position on the home screen. At any other time, I think they should implement a software solution to make the “ears” black to blend in with the notch and make it look like a thin bezel, so that it disappears and we just see the contents of whatever app we are using.

I HATE the notch and I HATE the rounded active-screen corners.

Especially from a photography-editing standpoint.

I don't mind the look of the notch on the homescreen. My only concern is how severely letterboxed video content will be if I don't watch something at full screen with the cutout portion visible. Will I essentially have an iPhone SE screen size when watching Netflix?

That being said, one thing that might be forgotten is that Apple tends to move industries based upon its design choices. I have a feeling that over time content providers will find clever ways to incorporate or minimize any potential downside of the cutout.

All the people so bothered about the notch can just jailbreak their X’s and have the ‘software’ bezel that they so desire. Also people moaning about the notch ‘breaking design principles’ need to get a grip. If designers always followed rigid rules then we would eventually just end up with everything looking exactly the same without any variations.

Photos are 4:3, the X’s screen is 18:9, the corners won’t effect the photo, the same way photos don’t reach current iPhone corners. (unless you zoom into the photo)

I predict people will love face ID and can’t imagine how they used Touch ID before. Then people will forget about the notch entirely.

“The notch is ugly.”

You’re incredibly wrong. The notch is aesthetically pleasing.

See how idiotic you sound when you state a pure opinion as if it’s scientific fact?

I’m just saying if you’re a shareholder of a public company you should voice your concerns. Thanks for saying my opinion sounds idiotic. May others be as courteous to you as you are to them.
