Well that is typical. I ordered my first ever apple product last week, MBP 15" with iWork pre-installed. So does that mean I will be stuck with iLife 09? If so what the hell I will wait and see if the update is any better and purchase it later on, perhaps there could be an upgrade for a cheaper price? Man this sucks!

I'd place my bet on iBooks if a new app is added to the package.

I can't really see that coming as a paid application. I'd think iBooks (or whatever an iBook reader might be called on the Mac) would come as a standalone download like Safari, or integrated into iTunes.

EDIT:
I just thought what I’d like to see in the iLife creative suite…

…something to allow the user to design and publish (and not just through the approved iChannels) e-zines, e-books, e-tc.

Now, that I could see, although maybe with iWork instead of iLife? Maybe even integrated with Pages?

You are exactly right on the iPhone app point. There was another company offering to turn any RSS feed into a native iPhone app. Apple non-directly responded that they want native apps to be real differentiators of the iOS platform. In other words, if it is a simple app that can (and should) be done in Safari, then do it as a web app.

We submitted an promotional App for our company through appOmtor and it was rejected due to "limited utility," so I know this happens. It was a lot better than one made from those dodgy RSS feed generators so I really don't understand how those apps are getting approved.

Looks like there's only 30 apps made with appOmator so far but for what it's worth, I really do think the software is cool - just wish it would have worked for us.

https://www.appomator.com/apps/

Appomator refunded all of our fees though so it wasn't that bad.

Yea maybe, but I'd have to say that the Preview app already can do stuff like that, it would just take rewriting that. It's almost nothing but reading pdfs that you can interact with on a touchscreen device which would be useless on a computer, unless they are gonna sell it with the intention of using their new Magic Trackpad along with it. Then it could be usable.

Just checked my shipping date. It was shipped 26th of July and arrives august the 7th. Now stop me if you think I am wrong but as I live in Ireland and I believe my MBP would be shipped from the Netherlands I think it is odd it would take 12 days to get to me. Unless if by miracle they are holding it back to install the new iLife 11. Maybe this is just wishful thinking but I must have faith.

If iDVD won't be included in iLife, then I'm guessing the new mystery application will be an iDVD replacement. At least, I hope so, because I need it when I edit my movies in iMovie.

Wouldn't it be a nice surprise if iDVD was replaced with iBluRay? Doubtful since Steve Jobs said BluRay is a stopgap and HD downloads is the future.

I doubt Apple would do that. Whatever it is you ordered is what you are going to get. Sad, but unless you wait for their product cycles to be up, you're really just going to be stuck with their previous generation of their technology. However, I am sure after the first few days of iLife '11's release you will find SOME way to obtain it for a reasonable price, if you catch my drift.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

If iDVD goes what is there to replace that feature? (maybe this mystery app?)

iBD :D

That is something I considered. If it was going to be sold on it's own, I would agree. But it could be packaged with iLife just for marketing reasons and potential dependencies with the rest of the iLife '11 apps. Don't forget that it would come free on new Macs anyway.

It would be more than Preview, in the same way that iPhoto is more than Preview. Organization, for one.

The main issue that I see with an iBooks app is that iPhoto is the only program that links into iTunes for syncing. Don't know if Apple would add a second program to that list. They could develop a way for iTunes and iBooks to share the same library file. Or maybe something related to the over the air syncing of iBook data.

as always, looking forward to see what's new in garageband :]
iphoto should get some cool new features as well, hopefully some basic photoshop type editing, like layers.

I hope iLife 11 is a bit more substantial that just 64bit and a few tweaks here and there, otherwise it will be of little value.

So, my thoughts on the new app in descending order of likelihood.

1) iBooks - A new desktop application that will allow you to read and buy books from the iBookstore, or even your own imported epub books. This will be especially geared toward students, with options such as highlighting, notes, bookmarks, multiple books open simultaneously, and integrated dictionary and thesaurus. You might even be able to write your own ebook within the app, and publish it right to the iBookstore.

2) iPaint - The paint and drawing app you've always wanted for the Mac. etc. etc. etc.

3) FaceTime - A long-shot because iChat is already integrated in the OS, not iLife; but including this in iLife will allow them to update/add it without having to wait for an OS revision.

One word - PAL!

This is the most important addition for those who live in PAL TV regions.

Simply add PAL as a standard video export size from iPhoto and iMovie. For goodness' sake, Australians have close to the fastest Apple product takeup (per capita) in the world. Please give us PAL support!

Maybe they'll somehow combine the now neutered/useless iMovie with iDVD and make an actual awesome movie editing app which has iDVD built-in.

I'd imagine somewhere down the line, that Quicktime will play optical media too. I think it would be beneficial to have all videos play in Quicktime, regardless of format (and by extension playable in iTunes too).

That way DVD player can continue in a way, and also support Bluray/whatevers next when they eventually come to Macs.
As for iDVD, yea stick that in with Quicktime's export option.

And for god's sake make Quicktime better. X is terrible! It's lost so much functionality over 7.

The way the app store is set up now is what is keeping it from being a total disaster. Think about it. Needing to learn programming is what is keeping the store from being nothing but shovelware junk.

If Apple makes it so any 12 year old with a Mac can design apps, the store will be filled with nothing but garbage and App designers that actually took time to learn how to design and program apps won't have a chance.

It will be used as a get rich quick thing with them. If they want to turn a profit from the app store, they should have to work for it.

Isn't this a bit like saying that only techies should have blogs, because if everyone is able to have a blog then the internet will be nothing but banal junk? Just because people don't have any programming knowledge doesn't mean they can't have an interesting idea/ access to a useful dataset.

Of course there'd be much more junk on there, but there's huge amounts already, and Apple would still be rejecting the useless ones. There'll also be the chance for small/local/cash-stretched organisations to produce useful apps even though they'd be intimidated by learning code or hiring a programmer. To take a banal example, an app for people to send geo-tagged photos of potholes directly to the people who fix them in that small area... There are huge possibilities for apps which are only important for a small locality, but which make life better there.

People who have programming knowledge would just have to outcompete apps made through iLife, if an app creator is in the next version. Presumably that wouldn't be too difficult?

I'm curious about the mystery app. Can't say I'm too happy about the removing of iDVD though. I use that a lot and always thought it was awesome =/

New iLife app is the TV viewer/recorder for the new iMacs that come with TV tuners built in - shipping the same day as the new AppleTVwithTuner/Recorder&Screen!
