Man, with the releases today, I was hoping for something in stone. Thanks, though. Guess I'll just keep waiting ...

Pal

Are you serious? PAL support has always been built into those apps. Just go and set it in the Preferences. That's it. Done.

Considering it's a setting that takes all of a couple of seconds to change I don't see what the drama is. Hardly worth Steve Jobs having a press conference over is it?

I appreciate the responses... but it's not as simple as changing preferences.

Maybe I didn't explain the problem clearly.

It doesn't matter what preferences you set in iPhoto, iMovie and iDVD because the simple export functions IGNORE those preferences.

For example if you "send to iDVD" from either iPhoto or iMovie it encodes an NTSC movie, which iDVD then has to re-encode as PAL when you go to burn the DVD. The double encode from my original PAL video footage to NTSC then back to PAL is not only time consuming, it destroys picture quality.

The only way to do it properly is by using the more detailed and less user friendly Quicktime export settings to save the individual video files, then manually importing those video files into iDVD. Which is fine if you know which settings to use - this requires pro-sumer knowledge.

What I'm asking for from Apple is for the simple default export to line up with the preferences the user has already chosen - so that the simple workflow for users with less expertise, eg "send to iDVD" actually generates best quality output first time instead of double encoding and ultimately rubbish quality.

Does that make more sense?

My bet is that it'll be an iOS emulator letting you use iOS apps on your Mac. Or maybe just an app store for desktops?

I mean. Trackpad + iOS emulator is pretty nice, eh?

I'm okay with the disappearing of iDVD... if there's a replacement like iBlu-ray! Otherwise no, I still did a DVD a month ago for a friend, I use it from time to time. Heck, my whole business was working a time with iDVD, until I dropped this platform for quality reasons -not because it's obsolete or so-, it just wasn't the time of media I expected for my business.

iDVD drop: yes, but not without a replacement or something cooler (like a totally new iDVD, just like iMovie !)
iWeb = not enough to replace it, not the same experience (needs a computer)
iMovie = no authoring capabilities, shouldn't have anyhow.
USB-stick = yuck, no way!

DVD's are still very prolific and will be for a long time, people won't "throw" their collections away like this !

this may still be the case. But it wont be part of the iLife suite. iLife is traditionally for creating content -
iPhoto - organiize photos, edit photos, create calendars, books, output by email/MobileMe
iMovie - organize video, edit video, share with others
Garageband - create music, podcasts - share with others
iWeb - create website, share via the web
iDVD - assemble content from iPhoto, GB, iMovie and share on DVD

an app store for desktop would be free and outside of iLife if Apple ever allow it.

It would be nice if Apple would allow for those dropping several thousand dollars on a new iMac to get iLife for free when it ships in August. I hate the thought of waiting another month to get my iMac...but also want the latest iLife. Ugh...

While I love the idea of playing all those wonderful cheap games on my mac, how could this ever work? The touch "screen" works on the phone because you can see what you're touching directly. You can't use a trackpad and your computer screen in the same way. You'd never know where to touch, unless the magic trackpad can sense your hand above it and display a shadow on the screen where the touch would register....

.... oooooooo that would be cool ......

Adobe has a policy that upgrades are free from when they ANNOUNCE the new product, although Apple is think is more from when it ships. They may make it retroactive to announcement date.

For iLife '09, it wasn't retroactive. For Snow Leopard, if you bought your Mac two months before, you were fine. I could see them qualifying all macs bought since the desktop refresh this week.

 Really?

iWeb was so befuddlingly clunky it was easier just to make your own site in Dreamweaver. I thought it was total junk. To each his own, but sort of surprised to hear anyone praise that app.

Uhg. Fool.

If you are going to quote, quote the whole sentence. And read what you quote.

It was a killer app that was let go. Thus it was never a killer and became a piece of junk. Well, not junk, but it's filled with ridiculous code and easily goofed function. I use Dreamweaver as well for 90% of my site work.

Apple should have spent a lot of time developing that app into something proper. Most folks can't program or bother programming websites, so a well made site builder would make Apple computers a must buy for most people (those that can't program HTML).

Evidence for some of the changes to iLife?

As possible corroboration for some of the claims of the original post, note that on the technical specifications page for the new iMacs (http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html), under the "Included Software" heading is the following:

iLife
Includes iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, and iWeb.

Notice two things: it doesn't specify the version of iLife that will be included, and iDVD is not among the listed applications. This contrasts with how things were listed on an archived version of the comparable page from 2009 (http://web.archive.org/web/20080723203028/www.apple.com/imac/specs/) that listed the following under "Installed Software":

iLife ’08 (includes iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb, GarageBand)

This suggests to me that iDVD will indeed be gone and that a change to the version of iLife is slated for the very near future just as the original post indicates.

I half wonder if Apple is going to start phasing out disc drives soon on Macbooks.

iLife 09 has been called simply iLife for quite some time now. However, I agree that the lack of iDVD is telling.

Regarding FaceTime: there is a reason Apple made the technology opensource. They want it to catch on in a big way. There's no way they'd put it in a $79 software bundle. My guess that future versions of iChat (or FaceTime, if they choose to rebrand it) will feature releases similar to Safari. It will be free, taken away from the OS, given yearly updates, and yes, possibly a Windows version.

FWIW, I ordered a new MBP on Sunday and it shipped this morning (from Shanghai). HOWEVER, Fedex is claiming it won't be delivered until the afternoon of the 10th - which seems odd, given that the Apple battery charger also shipped from Shanghai (on the 2nd) and arrived this morning.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but it does seem slightly odd that it would take an additional two business days for a package to transit the exact same path via Fedex, especially when that "extra delay" just HAPPENS to have it arriving on a Tuesday afternoon... I guess we'll see soon enough!

Interestingly, this search finds a page at Amazon with the text "This includes coverage of the latest MacBook models, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife '10, iWork '10, and the latest trends and tools in the market."

In the Google cache this cannot be found, though, and also the web page at Amazon now as another text that doesn't mention specific versions of iLife and iWork.

It's the book MacBook for Dummies, 3rd edition, which is to be released in September, according to dummies.com.

According to Powell's Books, "This new edition will have will have approximately 30-40% new content. This includes coverage of the latest MacBook models, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife '10, iWork '10, and the latest trends and tools in the market." Both Powell and dummies.com mention "create and share DVDs".

Whatever they are releasing, they'd better bring their Pages and Numbers A-game, because right now Pages and Numbers are in no means competition for Word and Excel, especially with MS Office 2011 right around the corner.

Really?

Delayed Until Later This Year

Just curious how you heard / know this since I'm actually looking to buy iLife '09 this week (yes, I know slow adopter here). Got a bunch of footage waiting for polishing and the '08 version is just cumbersome imo. So I welcome a release of '11 sooner than later.

Makes no sense that iLife would drop solo in Aug., esp. w/ the new iMac shipping. I'm guessing the "mystery" application has something to do w/ touch or iOS. New touch due in early Sept. iOS 4 for iPad due in fall. Seems like a more logical release time than Aug when no consumers are busy getting in a last vaca or ramping up for school.

I don't think it has ever really been competition for MS Office. I think it is more of an alternative not so much a direct competitor. Could be wrong.

I wouldn't be surprised if the new app, like someone else mentioned is a paint app or photoshop lite type app. Test the waters for Apple.
