Have you seen the fertility trend of the top 20% income bracket countries and individuals for the past 1-2 decades?

Unplanned childlessness and planned childlessness is on the rise with <2 births per mother. S. Korea leads it by a little over 1.00 per mother.

The Vision Pro may not as quickly eat into those devices Steve pointed to in 2006 but it is the device that will stay with us after Tim passes.

Before the 2024 Vision Pro I wanted to replace from my decade old

- 2011 MBP 13" 32nm > 2021 MBP 16" 5nm
- 2012 iMac 27" 22nm > 2023 iMac 27" 5nm
- 2016 LG OLED 4k TV > 2026 LG OLED 8K TV
- 2018 iPad Pro 11" A12X Bionic 7nm > 2028 iPad Pro 11" M4 1nm (A10)

But entering the 2030s will I replace the laptop, desktop, TV and tablet with their refreshed SKUs or go AR?

This was why I was saying that for Vision Pro to get iPhone success it needs to reach $429-1599 price band for it to move ~333 million units annually worldwide.
The Vision Pro is not an iPhone and it should never be measured against that success. A phone is something that we have come to rely on and everyone needs one. You would be measuring it against a once in a generation success... Not even TVs when it comes down to it are as important to most people than their phone.

Given enough decades it may end up looking like Google Glasses or contact lenses.

Given enough decades we might be flying around the sky like the Jetsons.... we are still waiting...
Not enough R&D money and regulatory limitations. How many hurdles would George have to go through to get his flying car FAA-legal?

The screen quality is gonna get reduced greatly in the consumer model, that's a fact. They'll probably reduce it from 4K to 1440p. The refresh rate will stay 90hz since VR needs it so people don't get motion sick.

They might reduce the amount of cameras though that might make controlling it worse so they might not

Speaking of cameras, the quality of photos and videos taken from it will probably get reduced as well, saving the feature to the Vision Pro since it's the pro headset.

They could change the chip in it. Instead of an M series the consumer model uses the much slower A series instead, which would greatly reduce the functionality. Maybe even take out Mac mode on it.

Though I dunno about you but the thing I would want removed is that external display showing your eyes. It just looks weird. I get it, it's there so people can maintain eye contact while wearing the headset. But this is my avid VR user self talking that frankly I'd rather if people didn't see my eyes.
Lower resolutions work fine for gaming, fitness, and even movie watching, but won’t cut it for the “floating app windows” use case that Apple is focused on. Maybe they could use LCD or standard OLED to save on cost, but that would need a bulkier headset. You need the cameras for passthrough and hand tracking, so reducing the quality for photos and videos isn’t really an option.
Removing the outer screen seems like the best option for cost savings. But even that probably won’t cut more than a couple hundred from the price.

Yeah, it's expensive being disabled. Look up how much wheelchairs cost. Or hearing aids, not the recent over the counter kind, but ones that are prescribed by audiologists. Or how much it takes to train and keep a guiding eye dog. Etc, etc.
Those Ironman-like hand/feet/limb/leg/arm fully powered and mechanical prosthetics?

If you live in the US how much is a care giver? Not $15/hr.... that's the rate for unskilled labor.

Damn. The only other practical thing I can think of them doing is instead of an M2 using an A17 for the SoC. How the hell are they gonna get this thing affordable? If the consumer model isn't under $1800, it's dead.

Apple has an M2 chip in two different $599 devices. It can’t be all that big of a premium in cost over an A-series chip.

I really love the tech - and it is honestly dead impressive to see. But I can’t get over the complete shift to a full mask for computing like that. I did back to back snow seasons for close to 20 years, I’m used to goggles. But for me this is a future purchase when it can be utilised with more regular day to day headwear, like glasses.

Eventually the HMD becomes natural. Take it from me, a guy who spends his time in VR from 3-5 hours in one sitting. I could go even longer if I wanted, and I have. And this is with a headset with front weight to it, something the Vision Pro doesn't have, so it'll be even easier to wear for so long that you may even forget you're wearing it.

I doubt it. What will happen is the Pro 2 introduced and the pro 1 with some minor changes will become the consumer. Apple simply cannot compromise on the visual quality....it would destroy their revolutionary approach. The outside glass, the premium single piece of aluminum. All that can go away but never the resolution, eye sensors, or processing speed.

Be that as it may - but that wasn’t the angle I was looking at. This isn’t ‘everyday’ regular portable computing like a phone - for example. I mean - it’s useful as that, for sure, but I’m not talking about geeks on tech forums. It’s too much for regular people to be expected to wear.

I'm wondering if it's possible to make the flame out of plastic, or some kind of composite material. And I really don't think you need the eye display to show people around you that you are paying attention.

I barely use my iPad anymore, pretty much only using it in the bathroom and on the bed. But seeing the Vision Pro, I can see using it a lot more than my iPad, since I don't have to carry a tablet with me. I just wear the headset and I have the OS with me.

Sorry but the thought of you in the bathroom with the Vision Pro is just too much to bear.

As the technology develops, I'm sure it will be a cool gadget to have.
Yes, pretty much how I see it too.

I don't see it replace any Mac at this moment, but that's how Apple do, so we will buy new stuff from them. But they might replace iPad's, as my thoughts are going for now at least.

Don’t you just love working on your Mac Pro while sitting comfortably on the loo? 😂
With how attached some are... I would not be that surprised. Good thing the women of the house would not permit such a stationary workstation on the throne.
