I always thought the notch was absurd. I get the people who "like it" because well... it's much easier to justify a handicap in design when you've got the latest and greatest iPhone out at the moment.
It will be removed eventually and the phones with notches will all age terribly. The 6/7/8 series phones still look great even with giant bezels because there's no "work around" notch for an unnecessary problem.
If they made an 8 Plus body, with stainless steel bands and an OLED display without any notches... oh boy...
Completely disingenuous and insulting. I neither like or dislike the notch. Don’t need to justify it nor is it any kind of handicap. That’s just moronic. It’s simply there. In the future it will go away but right now, it’s part of the hardware.
How do you live with virtually every tv channel having those distracting logos and announcements showing or popping up at the bottom of the screen? Must make you miserable whenever you watch.
So then the notch really isn’t absurd. It’s a design decision that in apple’s viewpoint, provided a solution that was the best of the worst possible solution into integrating electronics into the phone.
That said I love the distinctive look the notch gives the phone.
Okay, our perceptions are different. I’d rather have the notch, than a pop-up camera for example. The “real problems “ you cite are not issues to me. As always, YMMV when discussing subjective ideas.No. Apple simply settled, when settling isn't good enough in this business, especially when you have billions of dollars and thousands of engineers and designers. The notch is a sign of the times, just like the crap keyboards on the MBPs.
The mindset can't be "We accept this, this is it, this is how it HAS to be". No it doesn't. Android phone-makers are showing innovation with a full edge-to-edge screen and popup camera. There are different ways of solving this, like innovating on transparent components that are embedded in the glass, or miniaturizing the sensors and camera to the point where it fits in a thin bezel, etc.
In earlier posts I've addressed the real problems that the notch creates: it's not just aesthetic.
I'd rather have a popup camera and sensors with an edge-to-edge screen than a notch. The popup camera and sensors isn't as ideal as component miniaturization or transparency, but it solves two key problems: the presence of a notch and the consequences of this and software that uses the front-facing camera to spy.
For all you notch supporters, please pressure TV and smartwatch companies to make all of their devices with a notch. Actually, why shouldn't everything have a notch! Even car windshields! And sunglasses!
Calm down
Apparently the majority of smartphone owners have no issues with a notch.
Okay, so now I know you’re kidding. Subtle....Actually, why shouldn't everything have a notch! Even car windshields! ...
That is a totally different animal. Those TV douchebag logos, etc. are the lowest scum on earth. At least the damn notch does not appear, disappear, and come back as something else.Completely disingenuous and insulting. I neither like or dislike the notch. Don’t need to justify it nor is it any kind of handicap. That’s just moronic. It’s simply there. In the future it will go away but right now, it’s part of the hardware.

I don’t see anyone outside of a tech forum discuss, or remotely even care about the notch. It really does amaze me the amount of in-depth discussion about something so minimal on a site like this, but then I have to remind myself, MacRumors doesn’t reflect the reality of the real world that consumers just use the phone as a tool, no one has conversations and dissects every piece of the iPhone outside sites like this. The notch is and always will be a non-issue.
When out and about I see very very very few iPhones with notches in them. This is not to say I don't see a lot of iPhones, just very few with notches. Thing is, I feel its more a reflection of price rather than not liking a notch.
While I've never had a notched phone I've used my mother's iPhone X quite extensively and personally didn't mind it. I far from liked it but didn't really feel it got in the way of anything, rather, one just lost a chunk of the top status bar. One thing to note though is that its possible that one's acceptance of the notch may well be related to how much one uses their phone in landscape mode. It definitely makes a difference in landscape for me… something I don't much do myself.
FWIW, when it comes to symmetry in the standard, vertical, mode I find the hole punch of the Galaxy S10 to actually be in some ways worse than a notch. As I use a flat black background (predominantly for simplicity and to extend battery runtime) the camera in the top right often disappears completely leaving the battery/wifi/LTE indicators that would otherwise be in the top right corner, out of the top right corner, which sometimes looks weird. I'd probably be better off with a background where I can see the camera instead. When watching video I do find the hole punch significantly better than a notch… something that I mostly do on a tablet.
So its all a tradeoff as to what a manufacturer makes more important. And Apple puts a high importance on Face ID and its superior abilities. Samsung, and others, not so much.
“The notch is and always will be a non-issue” to people who claim it’s a non-issue until there’s a new iPhone with no notch.
notch looks horrible and iPhone is BY FAR the worst.
Look at OnePlus 7 Pro on the left - it's obviously possible to make a beautiful screen.
I wonder what excuses Cook will present in October...
I'll never own a notched iPhone unless there's no other choice years from now. It looks like garbage (to me).
Would anyone accept a giant notch in their TV screen or computer monitor?
How about a gigantic notch on the movie screen at your local theater? How about a notch on imax theater screens?
Notched iMac?
Notched iPad?
Notched notebook computer?
You can see how absurd it is.
I think it's more absurd to compare these large devices to a tiny phone. Of course the bigger ones can eliminate the notch. There's only so much real estate they have to work with on an iPhone.

From the photo it is easy to see which one is the iPhone due to the notch. It is an identifier.
Remember when phones had huge bezels that there was room for the company logo on the front? That was tacky. Same with this notch.
.... I guess I’ll just keep living in reality now realizing the notch is/never will be an issue outside a tech site, while you’re fantasizing about the future with an iPhone that does not have one, I’d say my side is a more realistic view at this junction.

Pop up camera is a worse compromise than the notch. Horses for courses as they say.![]()

So when Apple comes out with a phone that has no notch I assume you won’t be buying one: why fix something that isn’t broken!

Love it!
