iPhone X I'm not getting a new iPhone until the notch is gone.

Will you buy an iPhone with a notch, or wait until a model arrives with no notch?

Those that want an iPhone with no notch, chances are the iPhone will lose the notch...eventually.

Either move on to another brand in the meantime or just wait another 2-3 years for this design to be phased out.

notch looks horrible and iPhone is BY FAR the worst.
Look at OnePlus 7 Pro on the left - it's obviously possible to make a beautiful screen.
I wonder what excuses Cook will present in October...

Gasp! That one glass and metal rectangle is absolutely hideous compared to the others! :p

But what do I know? I use an 8 Plus with its ugly and obsolete bezels!

Uh, do the other phones in that comparison photo have face ID, a camera, a speaker, microphone, ambient light sensor, etc?

HTC Pro 7 has Face ID and the rest. Also that phone has fall detection and quickly retracts the camera when the phone falls. The pop up camera on it is extremely fast.

So when cars are sold without a notch I guess you won’t be getting one?

I already have one.

The Notch is not the big downside. The iPhone should have BOTH Face ID and Touch ID for the times you have the iPhone laying on your desk.

More moving components to break. That's why.

That's not sufficient to support that it's a worse compromise.

The popup camera solves:
  • The necessity of the notch and the consequences of that: less screen real estate; a defined top of the device with Apps blocked from rotating fully; asymmetrical design; impediment to content on the screen (pinch and zoom a photo with the notch in the way; Web browsing in landscape mode...).
The HTC Pro's popup camera is extremely fast and has fall detection, so when it drops the camera quickly retracts. Therefore, the complaint about "more things to break" is somewhat addressed. The device also has "Touch ID" built into the screen. And if we're talking about things that break easily, my iPhone X has multiple cracks on the back because Apple decided that glass was a good thing to make a mobile phone out of... not.

It would certainly look nicer if it was a uniform strip across the top of the iPhone. Even if it’s a 4mm bezel just on the top I personally think that would be a nicer solution. Be cool if Apple have been working on shrinking it at least for this year.

People say the notch makes iPhones stand out which I’m sure it does, but why would you want your iPhone to stand out? Genuine question.

I have the XS. I honestly never notice the notch and didn't realize this was such an issue for many.

I don’t see it as an issue but more a topic of conversation. iPhone aesthetics have always been discussed on here and the notch was rather unusual when it came out. It’s not an issue for me but I don’t think it looks particularly pretty. In use I doubt it matters and is soon forgotten about. Just my observations from a design brain lol.

The notch?! Who cares about the notch? It's fine.

The real annoyance with the design of modern iPhones, for me, is the camera. It sticks out too far and means the phone can not sit flat on a flat surface. This makes it very annoying to use while sat at a desk, cafe table, etc, as the phone constantly taps/moves/wobbles on the surface.

Apple need to address this either by reducing the depth of the camera bulge, moving the bulge to the center, or by balancing it with another bulge that prevents the wobble!

...the notch was rather unusual when it came out.

Not only "unusual", when the first leaks showed it, NOBODY believed that was the design Apple chose.
Absolutely nobody. People were making fun how stupid that looked, how Steve would have never approved it etc.
When it became official, suddenly it was a "non-issue"...

BTW it was clearly a tech limitation, but now, as it's been proven by OnePlus, there are ways
around it. If they keep it in 2019, it makes them look even more stupid, especially for $1500...
Especially when OnePlus is able to sell a clean large screen with 50% higher refresh rate
and much higher resolution for half of that money. What's your excuse Timmy?

Reference the bolded: I don’t think anything looks ‘pretty’ on an iPhone or smart phone in general, I guess that doesn’t seem like the appropriate term to apply to an electronic device? Am I right? (Either way, it doesn’t change anything, the notch will be here for 2019, and the same thread’s will be started over again on the same topic.)

Tech isn’t supposed to be pretty, it’s supposed to be functional. That’s where Apple excels.

Right, and that’s because their a ‘design company’, and to me, that’s what separates them from the competition with hardware like the Apple Watch, iPhone, iMac, etc. It’s rather unique in certain identifiers/characteristics.

I’ve seen the video, the camera does not deploy/retract that fast. It’s a very nice phone but that camera is a weak point.

So your car has no review mirror? Why am I not surprised? Required for virtually every state inspection (assuming you’re in US).

Maybe place a lens in each corner, to double as a "foot".

(Should I patent this?)
:D

I admire certain elements of the iPhone as being good pieces of product design. The chassis and glass assembly with such small tolerances make for an almost seamless design for instance. The high gloss glass backs and speaker hole machining shows a fantastic attention to detail and I’ve always felt iPhones stand out as being well designed and aesthetically pleasing. Improvements for me would be a flush camera on the back and a much smaller notch and I think for me you’d have an almost perfect design.

As I said though it’s not an issue for me, just a minor preference.

I'm holding onto my 8+ until its gone. The notch was the biggest esthetic design failure in Apples history.
“Biggest design failure in Apple’s history” is quite the exaggeration there. I think you’re attaching a bit too much emotion with that lol.

This is so much ado about nothing. The notch isn't ideal but it is not the travesty that most make it out to be. Also, it seems likely iOS 13's dark mode should obscure the notch most of the time for those with trauma related to this.

Why doesn’t the camera deploy/retract fast. Spoiler: it does. But explain and support your comments.
