As long as it's wider, not shorter.

Given the choice between fewer pixels in a widescreen, vs more pixels in a 4x3 screen - I would expect most people would opt for more pixels.

The mockup (a few posts back) of the 4x3 iMac is a good example - fitting a bigger 4x3 screen would be preferred to the smaller widescreen.

I submitted a Poll Request to Macpolls concerning prefference of 4:3 Vs the widescreen 16:10 aspect ratio that most Computer Widescreen LCDs are made at. Hopefully the poll will be posted in the near future.

Also Wide screen LCDs for Computers are almost always 16:10 aspect ratio and not the 16:9 that everyone seems to be saying it is. That's why even on a Cinema display one still will have black bars at the bottom and top when viewing a 16:9 aspect ratio DVD movie albeit the bars are much smaller.

yeah , i cant wait fer the new ibook's , i heard they were up to 1.55 GHZ
64 MB AT 9600 or a 9200 which i hope is not the case,
Im hoping that they will come standard with 512 ram ,
I hope this is all true , i want to get somthing that is portable yet somthing that can run Unreal Tournament 2004 and a few Racing games. I hope there Pre-loaded with Tiger , that would be sweet. Do u think that they will have a good enough Graphics to run a External 17 er 19 " LCD monitor fer some Games , or even desktop work such as imovie ?

If you want that buy a powerbook, or an old powerbook. My old tibook can do what you asked above.

mini v.s. ibook

ok , im confused...if a mini can produce resoultion to fill a monitor or "Display" with good quality with a ATI 9200 Graphic Card , then why cant a ibook if it has the same card??? :S

If the low end iMac doesn't follow its bigger brothers up to a 128mb GPU I am personally going to walk down to cupertino and kick Jobs' cheating ass.

As a student wanting to buy his first own computer, I want something that will last because by the time my debts rack up I won't even be able to afford food let alone a shiny new Mac.

Because the mini drives one monitor, the ibook drives itself plus the additional monitor.

lol i cant afford that ! lol im only a student , bad enough the ibooks 2200 fer the way iwant it , would that work tho ? if i closed the main display would the secondary be nice ?

Nope. You can't close the iBook display, unless you use a hack. Furthermore, the external display with iBook is limited to 1024x768, unless you use a hack. Plus, it still cuts your VRAM in half.

They don't really make the iBook for external display use. :(

low-end powerbook 1899
high end ibook 1899

low end powerbook is faster, minus a dvd-burner, and you can burn an external for like 130 CDN..

Hmmm

I could have sworn that an iBook hooked up to an Apple display will work with the lid closed. As long as it is started by pushing the power button on the display.

I guess I could be wrong. I'll have to check it out.

yeh , but i dont think i would want a 12" if im gonna be using it as my main computer.. thats kinda small..

It's no less work space than the other iBooks. The displays on the 12" and 14" are the same resolution (1024x768). If you're going to be using an external display anyway, you should go for the PowerBook...it'll just make your life easier. Except, of course, if you need/want/like the oversized pixels on the 14" iBook display. Personally, I can't stand how jagged they look and don't know too many people (especially students) that have any visibility problems with the 12" displays.

If you think the 14" gives you a larger work area than the 12, then it's good to know that you're wrong so you can reevaluate your purchase decisions :).

I hope that your question is:

- would you prefer a 19" 4x3 screen of 1280x1024 resolution, or a 17" widescreen 16x10 of 1280x800 resolution (dpi same on both)?

or
- would you prefer a 21" 4x3 screen of 1600x1200, or a 24" widescreen 16x10 of 1920x1200 resolution?

because that's what I've meant when I said that I don't want it shorter.... (My answers would be 4x3 for the first question, and 16x10 for the second)

DVD movies are typically 1.85 to 2.35 aspect ratio, not 1.6 - so even your widescreen LCD will have wide black bars (just a little less wide than the 4x3).

Note that a 4x3 ratio can also be written as 16x12, which isn't really that far off from 16x10.

eMac please die...

Why? I mean for a start, this has been debated about a thousand times on the death of the eMac so this is really an entirely irrelevant point. It will be a shame if they kill off that white mammoth. Its the best mac I own (cant afford a Powermac) and the mac mini isn't as powerfull (we have one upstairs). It is absolutly the perfect all in one solution - and it's one heck of a good buy. Display, keyboard, Mouse, Software all for £500 odd.

I don't think the eMac is going to go anywhere. Its there as an option - one that you don't have to take. I really think that various solutions are the key to success for a company like Apple. Long live the white elephant eh?

ok guy's ... What the hell is Avatar?!?!?!?!?! lol
