Since they are holding back on the PM on this rumor something must be good for the PMs. They have to be upgraded, I have played the waiting game long enough April is my month. Now hurry up.

I hope so. I take it you are looking to get a PMac? I have a stash of cash and I am waiting to see if Apple does change the PMac line up. I hope they do and only change the price in the downward direction. Any which way I WILL be getting a PMac after the updates this month.

HD is 1280x720 and 1920x1080. Currently OTA and dish/cable HD content is broadcast/distributed as 1280x720, 60 frames per second progressive, OR 1920x1080, 30 frames interlaced. Many people prefer 720p over 1080i (myself included), but others prefer 1080i despite its inherent interlace artifacts on progressive displays (LCDs and plasmas).

Yup! I'm glad to see not everyone has bought into the "HD is 1920x1080 only" marketing hype.

You fail to realize that you can buy video content stored on media at a resolution of 1920x1080 progressive. It's rare right now but it will become more popular as the HD standards get pushed and market prices come down. Also, all the ultrahigh end HD monitors (eg 60+ inches) are getting better de-interlacing processors. This means that your interlaced 1080i signal going in can be upsampled to 1080p and look good, ie. no artifacts. I work at a company that creates these chips and as processing power increases, these de-interlacing chips can do magic.

So 1920x1080p (progressive scan) is the way to go!!! So for a 1920x1200 23" iMac, I'd buy it! It would be great for work!

if Apple finally understand that nobody wants to see 2yr old graphics hardware shipping in new Macs any more they may actually push the X700/800.

As these are also PCI Express GPUs that would bode well for upcoming revisions in all the machines. Well, maybe.

That would require a PCI Express controller in the chipset that Apple uses for their G4 processors. Unless they use a G4 processor with built-in chipset functionality (memory controller, bus controllers, etc - which aren't scheduled until late this year IIRC) I don't think that they will want to design a new chipset for the G4 bus in this day and age. I'm sure that IBM will be/are making a G5 chipset with PCI Express however.

I'd would love to see an iBook with a 6200TC of course, and a PowerBook with a 6600. This probably won't happen until both include G5 processors.

I suppose this kills the G5 iBook rumours though.

Hmmmm! Just a thought. Perhaps the eMac upgrade could be the reintroduction of the G4 TFT style.......any thoughts?

If it had a 4:5 aspect ratio, a glass protection screen and looked like the iMac G5 i would be all for it...oh and a G5 @ 3GHz would be really nice too

I'm VERY curious about the iBook GPU upgrade...

The next best mobile Radeon they could put in would be the 9600, but then that would be better than the GeForce in the base PBs.

I know that the PCI version of the 9200 is slower than a 9000, but is that the case with the AGP version? Maybe they'll stick a 64MB 9000M in the iBooks, although going to a lower number would probably require some skullduggery from Apple's Marketeers.

Maybe they'll just bump the 9200's VRAM to 64MB? That wouldn't be very exciting, but that fact alone makes it the most likely scenario...

In a perfect world, the iBooks would all get 5200s with an optional 9600M and the PBs would get a 9600M with an optional 128MB 9700M. Ha ha, I crack me up....

HD?

So, I'm a bit confused. I see people mentioning HD computer displays???HD has a high resolution of 1080, i think pretty much every monitor these days can display a 1080 image at full res (TVs have a much lower resolution...its all about sitting 12inches away vs. 7ft away). The issue with the computer and HD is being able to process the video. Especially with editing, working in HD with a good amount of real time feedback will require some big fat CPUs and GPUs.

Which also brings me to the point... imovie HD???? home maybe people actualy own true HD video cameras. They are (increasingly less.. but stiil) rare and pricey and if your source image isn't HD, editing in HD wont give you any better quality, really.

Ok.. so I read the first few pages of posts, and I must ask this simple question: Is the GPU in the current iMac's more powerful then my Radeon 9000 Mobility with 64MB of VRAM in my 2+ year old powerbook?

even if i knew about all these problems with iMac's video card, i still would have bought it.

to me, it still looks good and runs quick, and I'm doing video editing on it.

(Before anyone says "Powermac!" I want to say that in order to have a machine with performance similar to my desires, i would have paid at least 3500 dollars, money i do not have)

Blu-ray?

It would be great to have a HD display on an iMac, an improved graphics card, but that would only enable viewing...not authoring...why has no one mentioned that a blu-ray burner would be necessary if you wanted your HD production all on one disk?
That being said...I don't think Apple is ready to put Blu-ray into the iMac, therefore I think they will wait on the HD display until the pro-users (power mac/book) are satisfied with blu-ray and HD displays respectively, then announce an iMac HD revision.

Yes, the Geforce FX 5200 Ultra is theoretically at least 20% faster than the Radeon 9000 Pro. The Radeon 9000 Mobility is probably slower than the 9000 Pro.

hey, you're talking about MY machine. ;) o.k. it's my future machine.

i really think that's the way to go. apple could establish itself as the hd company with a machine like this. software would follow that format.

A couple things:

Why is wide screen great? Seriously.
Easy. How are your eyes arranged on your face? One big one in the middle, or two side by side? Widescreen makes much more sense - peripheral vision acts horizontally, not vertically. And anyway, the whole 'we work with things that scroll vertically' argument doesn't wash - we have many easy ways to scroll vertically, so it shouldn't be an issue. If you have a 16:9 screen you can make better use of space by scrolling windows that can be scrolled, and keeping other things to the side.

No mention of the PM in these updates? They should be going up to 3.0ghz any day now right? It's been too long since we've seen progress on the PM front. Hopefully they'll include the blu-ray superdrive as well. :D

Shipping Dates...

If anyone bothers to go to apple's website.. the PowerMac,iMac,eMac,iBooks all have same day shipping on all variations. hmmm... wonder what's going on?? ;)

Powermac first, please!

Seriously, before I see the Imac and Emac being update, Apple needs desperately to kick as with a new PowerMac update. It's so overdue.

Good point, all hardware except Powerbooks and Mac Minis have 24hrs shipping time. Is this just healthy supply in the current models or a blanket put on all products to cool predictions?

I'm thinking they are doing what you say and cool predictions to try and clear the supply channels, cuz they'll be loosing money on all left over models.
