Do they debit your card when you order? Or when the imac is despatched?

In my case, I paid by Debit card and the money came out the next day, 8 weeks before deilvery.

On a side note, I always thought that companies couldn't deduct funds when buying by credit card (not debit) until the order was in stock and dispatched.

If you read most of the online terms and conditions of e-tailers they specify that this is illegal, yet after trawling the DTI, the Distance selling regs act and such websites regarding this, there is no mention of this practice being against the (English & Welsh) law and why would it only apply to Credit cards and not Debit?

More like companies trying to look better than other companies? Anybody actually know? Any bottom feeders, sorry lawyers on this board?

Anyone care?

Is your iMac stock or bto, I'd be very surprised (jealous) if you got a bto so quickly

That is ridiculous how Apple debit your card on the day of the order...even if you end up getting the imac 3-4 weeks later. Was this an isolated case or does this happen to everyone? Did everyone from the U.K. have their card debited on the day of the order or near dispatch time?
thanks

Was a BTO 17" 1.8. The only extra thing I added was a the bluetooth kit (module, mouse & kb). I imagine they have *scores* of these available and thats why Its been processed so quickly.

Hydro, what sort of card do you have. I use a switch card so maybe that's why they debited it so quickly?

ordered my imac wooohoo!

Careful consideration between the imac and power mac has concluded with me getting the 20" imac, delivery date: 29th Novemeber - i can't wait!!
Added: 1.5 gb ram, .mac account, and the bluetooth wireless mouse and keyboard.
So so sooooooooooooo excited, my first 'proper' Mac after my ibook (G3, 700 mhz) which is great but not powerful enough by half

Oh dear asif786, don't get your hopes up
My credit card showed a "Pending" amount increase immediately after order that stayed there for about 2 days. Then it went away. I think it was a credit limit or verification check. 3 weeks later, Nov 4th, the "Pending" amount went up again. I think this is the "hold" for the transaction because my available credit went down. There is no actual charge transaction yet. It's only been 2 days and I haven't received the ship notice yet, but I expect it in a day or two.

Yes, Apple sends shipping notices on weekends. I received my personalized iPod Photo ship notice on a Saturday and it arrived on Monday. Boggles my mind how it got from Shanghai to Seattle in 2 days, but I'm not complaining :D
I don't expect my iMac to arrive in 2 days from shipping

FYI, Bluetooth adds 1 to 2 weeks...it's a different Midplane board.

Your post is more what is considered to be normal business practice. This has also been my experience. Sometimes a company will check your credit card ahead of time just to see that you have the available funds. That can sometimes amount to a hold on that amount with out actually taking the funds.

artpease,

sure, i'm not getting my hopes up quite yet. In fact I'm not even too excited about this purchase - I wanted a PowerMac with a matching screen, but that's not going to happen so I'm settling for an iMac.

However, when I spoke to an Apple rep after placing my order, he informed me that they had started producing a lot more bluetooth models because they were very popular. Don't forget, mine is also a 17" - it seems a lot of people here have opted for the 20". for me, that's just too much to spend on a machine that I dont really like in the first place.

With regards to my shipping email - I'm not expecting that till next week or even the week after. The rep I phoned told me that it was 99% likely to ship next week, so thats what I'm waiting for. Assuming that my card being charged is associated with my order being processed is just me being optimistic. I'm not saying anything's set in stone - nobody here can, because none of us work for apple, and we dont know the ins and outs of their shipping system. But there's no harm in optimism.

Hmmm no offence but Fredstar asked the question about actually taking the money from your account (I think ?) they (Apple) took the money from my account on the day stated and sent me an email telling me it was shipping on the day stated

asif786 I'm not sure if it makes a difference but i would say that visa (mine) is accepted more readilly than switch but thats an unqualified opinion, as for your order I agree, mines a 20" proving to be far more popular than even Apple probably expected, maybe someone should create a poll fom the people posting to this thread as to which screen size was bought it would be interesting (to me) as to the percentages between 17" and 20" or better does any one know the numbers of 17"/20" iMacs sold or is this another topic ?

I definately agree that 20" would be, by far, the most popular model, Apple should have expected this. My philosophy is i am making an investment in a computer and i won't get a new one for a while...for an extra 400 odd quid you get a faster proc/more hd/superdrive and the difference a 20" has which is IMO the best size for my needs...and mos tof the public. I saw the 30" display and it was gorgeous but i wouldn't want a screen that big...ok i do really :p

Nah, a 20-23" is perfect for close viewing, i wouldn't want my 42" plasma on my desk tbh!
My ibook 12" is driving me a bit mad, it is too small to do every day tasks on and i can't actually run a lot of the apps i want too, i am running at 100% CPU the whole time. It was really a trial to get some real experience with Macs first hand and obviously Panther has impressed me greatly.
Counting the days till i get my imac :(, are the delivery times accurate or do they tend to delay?
thanks
Fredstar

Go for the Meat, Harry

I used a Sony Vaio 15" laptop for years before deciding on the iMac G5 20".

By comparison, the iMac is HUGE! I mean GIGANTIC!!!GIGANTIC

But for many on tight budgets, remember that Apple's 17" is equivalent to a 19" CRT, so it too will probably be a great improvement, if you're currently at 15" or smaller.

But let me tell you...the 20" is AWESOME.

Salivate

You folks awaiting your machines....

I waited all summer (at advice of Apple Rep) for the new iMac G5. Ordered w/in minutes after it was posted. Suffered through PC World virus BS, too many re-boots to recall, TWO hurricanes, no power, no phone, no shower, no cold beer...then the day after power was restored, the iMac arrived.

Pure computing bliss ever since.

Got iTunes rockin' on Virgin Radio UK right now, two open browers (Safari is great, but also check out Camino), browsing thru MacWorld Dec. '04 Issue on Zinio...like nothing the PC World can offer...you're in for something hot, so hang in there... :D

Shame about the beer though there's no justice in this cruel world

The beer's cold now...sorry to all about re-election of Bushman. We tried to unseat him, but the jihadists turned out in waves. However, we will not give up the fight.

Meanwhile...the G5 has been a great consolation.

If you haven't included an Airport Express (AE Card too, don't forget) and BT module, be sure to do so.

Hydroman...my brother was born in London...myself in California...where's Luton?

Luton (voted 1st in crap towns to live in) is geographically 33 miles northwest of the epicentre of London or 15 minutes drive (on a good day ) down the highway (M1) to north London

The minutes...the seconds...crawl by

So you live in the "sticks," huh, Hydroman? :p

That's okay...we live on 8 acres in the woods. One's brain, though, is whereever one chooses to place it. Hmmm, it must be about 2 or 3 a.m., there now. Can't sleep? Anticipating the arrival of the next extension of your cerebral matter (the G5)? I can certainly understand.

What did you order, and when is it projected to arrive? In my case, initial shipping date was 9/30/2004. It arrive 9/29. Does that give you any hope?

Keep in mind that first month or so of shipments were made via air from Shanghai, w/ Apple admitting a hit on profits and reverting to shipping via cargo containers on ships at some point.

I ordered Aug 31, so that would be 30 days. Where are you on that scale? Here's hoping you beat that.

Post Number Pig

Sorry noticed that post #2500 was coming up. Hoping to hit it, since I hit #1000 earlier.
