I have ordered my imac G5 with 1 512 ram module, would it be ok to add another 1gb module to the second dimm? I read somewhere that the memory had to or was optimized with equal ram amounts...is this true? Obviously if it is optomised then i would settle for 1gb with 2 512 ram modules
thanks

Equal size and equal speed for 128bit transfer, otherwise 64bit transfer. Some say you can't tell the difference...I'll bet you can ;)
Your best chance to match is to buy same mfg. I don't have my iMac G5 yet, but the chat says most have Samsung in them. You can mix brands with no problem but there is some risk they won't match speed. Make sure you can exchange.

Hey Fredstar

You must get two modules from the same batch, the samsung thing is they are batched modules but you must buy two, thats why I got a 512 module (just to tick along ) and will probably get 2x1gb mods and get rid of the 512 (ebay) there is a topic on matched modules somewhere  which I was lurking on, apparently your iMac can tell you wether you are in 64 or 128 bit with the modules used matched / mismatched

So i can't get a 512 mb ram stick from Crucial?! If i had know that i would have stuck with the 256 and bought two new 512's. £340 is a bit much for memory...I don't think i could justify spending that much.

Decreased Ship Time

This just in from the US Apple.com Store:

Estimated ship time for 17-inch iMacs is 1-3 days and for 20-incher is 3-5 days! I ordered my 20-incher on 10/25 so with any luck, it'll ship this week. Here's to hoping!

Sorry Fredstar found this thread
matched batched I think reading through "artpease" is correct? you just need 2 x same ram

Mixing brands is OK, if the speed matches. Crucial is OK, if the speed matches. You just need to be able to exchange. There are more threads than you want to read on Apple | Discussions. There were some who thought there was a problem with Crucial, which is really Micron, but it seemed to be an isolated case.
I ordered the default 256mb and have 2-1gb RamJet waiting...now if the darn thing would just come. (BT, I hope it's worth the wait!)

Liike artpease says there's a gazillion threads on this sorry for misinforming you geez I haven't even got mine yet
and I think I was lurking on that Apple topic that artpease mentioned

Well, my 20 inch iMac arrived yesterday and I'll add my voice to the chorus of people raving about them. I can honestly say it's the most stunning Mac I've owned ever since I purchased an LC II in the early 90's.

The box was quite battered when I got it, but everything is in perfect order, not one dead pixel.

Very very happy!

Hang in there - it WILL be worth the wait.

:)

I echo the last guy's post... Got my 20-incher Nov 2, after ordering from Apple.com October 4.. The thing's gorgeous.. the screen's HUGE... blutooth everything works great...

only problem - I ordered it with minimal ram so I could max it out with another vendor's ram, which I haven't yet bought... and it's just CHOKING on 256.. I mean it seems slower than my old G3 snow ibook!

Anybody want a stick of 256MB iMac G5 ram for cheap? I'll be putting it on ebay if I don't get any offers here in the meantime.

It's coming....

Hurray it's finally left Shanghai no idea where it's going (probably to Beijing and back again :D ) but all I can say is my computer flys

Actually your G5 now has the ability to fly in more ways than one. Movement if a good sign, good luck.

Heres what mine says:-
09 nov 04 90 75 truck arrived at final destination Apple Shanghai
08 nov 04 30 10 departed direct KN Luxemburg
04 nov 04 32 55 flight departed Kuehne & Nagel Shanghai
04 nov 04 32 05 Flight Booked Kuehne & Nagel Shanghai
31 okt 04 30 60 departed from product source Kuehne & Nagel Shanghai
31 okt 04 05 00 boxes scanned Kuehne & Nagel Shanghai
31 okt 04 00 05 Data received from supplier Apple Shanghai
31 okt 04 30 64 Departed from source Apple Shanghai

but as you can see it took 4 days to fly from Shanghai to Luxemburg

no wonder some iMac fans make so much noise, they must be nackered! :D ;)

Slightly confused....

Why does mine say "Departed Direct - Apple Shanghai" when usually people's say "departed direct KN Luxemburg" after the flight? Is mine still in Shanghai?????

Mine Arrived!

After about a month of waiting, my new iMac arrived yesterday! 17" 1.8 stock, and it is sweet! The widescreen LCD is awesome, with plenty of desktop room. Quiet as heck too!

One interesting thing was that I went to a local reseller website, and configured a PC as close as I could get to a new iMac (just for comparison), and the PC was more expensive.

It really is a thing of beauty, I love good design! Happy computing! :D

Let me add my voice to the chorus of accolades for the iMac G5! I got so fed up with all of the spyware and crap on my wife's Dell that I went to my local Apple store and picked up a 17" iMac for her. Aesthetically, it is just stunning. Compared to the 17" black ugly CRT that was on her desk, the iMac is just unbelievable. I have a dual 2.5G5 Power Mac across the room (my machine :) ) so we're starting to look like the Apple store at my house.

One thing that impresses the heck out of me is how quiet the iMac is, the mini fan revs compared to the hurricane fan revs of my PowerMac are almost cute.

In addition, system ops are nearly as fast on the iMac as they are on my PowerMac.

I just wish they'd finally send a matching two button/scroll wheel mouse already....would make switchers even happier.

A question: how do I install classic onto my wife's iMac? Some of the kids games want classic.....

You can install classic support from the additional software and hardware test CD. See Apple Support and Apple Discussions for lots of info.

Departed Direct means that it is on its way to flextronics nedelands. Remember though that this site takes a while to update, but i would start checking the TNT pages more that the Kuehne and Nagel site, tis there where you get more detailed stats.

Mine arrived today!!!!!!! Unfortunatley, 2 dead pixels.......Vey annoying, for when the screen goes black it comes up red, and theres a black one to the right, but it barely makes a difference. It seems that the warrenty covers only "mulitple pixels" so until i find some more....im stuffed.

(Btw hannah, where do you live?? newhere near london?)

Classic is automatically installed along with Panther. At least it did in my case. When you open a program that requires Classic, it will automatically startup. You can also have access to Classic by going to preferences and select it to show up in the top menu bar.

Whoot! I'm starting to get back the initial feeling of excitement check it out
