And after a long photo shoot, my photos will join the pile as well:

Ta Daaaa!!!

My first impressions are very good; this thing is as quiet as our 14" iBook. The speakers are also sweet. A few interesting things to note; the ram is mounted at an angle; also, the user has access to the formerly hidden PRAM battery which doesn't look anything like a PRAM battery but more like a button cell.

When compared to my 17" Studio Display, the screen on the iMac looks slightly longer but not very wide sitting next to the other LCD (see pictures). Nevertheless, it is a vast improvement over our old 15" CRT iMac screen. The 1.6 ghz processor is also quite a nice jump from 400 mhz.

I have one minor complaint which is probably just a manufacturing defect: The power cord will not plug in all the way, and does not sit flush with the back of the computer as the manual indicates it should; the side effect of this loose cord is that when I adjust the display, the power becomes disengaged and the computer shuts off. I tried opening the case and reajusting the power cord but no luck.

Other than that, the machine is awesome, though I desparately need RAM to add to the meager 256 mb. I'll try to get some benchmarks up as soon as I can.

Thank you both for posting - made me more excited about getting THE e-mail from Apple. Got a 20" BTO with BT so I'll probably be at the end of the BTO list.

Enjoy!

I love the breadbox pic! :p

Should you ask someone about that? If the manual says it's supposed to do something and it doesn't, I would think it would need reported. Power shutting off can't be a good thing especially if you're in the middle of something.

overall impression after a day...

First, for the person who posted a few messages back about the power cord not fitting in correctly. Same with me. I thought, this is just not right. I paid this much and it's cut out on me twice? So I fiddled around with it a bit...the round plastic base of the plug does indeed fit snugly into the computer, you just have to work it in.

Mine runs very quiet. I'm impressed that it isn't hot, just warm. I can feel a fan, or something running when I press my palm to the lower left side and the left side of the screen. Very sturdy. I jiggled on the base to see what it would take to knock it over, and I think it'll even be safe from a curious cat jumping on it. (hope that doesn't happen; don't want claw marks in the plastic).

I love the SuperDrive; never had one before. Very quiet, though it seems to take a very long time to recognize a disk has been placed in the computer. The speakers are very interesting placed underneath, but sound great.

I'm a little freaked over the white keyboard. WIll show the dirt much quicker than the black.

All in all, a sweet machine. Now, can someone direct me to the correct topic or forum to learn how to fix an old iMac that may have problems with the power supply?
Thanks!

argggh!

Voiteur, I have the same Fed Ex issue, and I'm also in Chicago. Maybe we missed our flight.
And it's a long a** flight to miss. Hopefully they'll go straight over the north pole, it's gotta be quicker that way.

This is getting ridiculous... you could dig a hole to Shanghai quicker than this- for over 24 hours now this thing hasn't budged. Is anyone else stuck in Shanghai? How long did it take for others tracking to move beyond this point?

This is all the info I've had since yesterday:

Ship date * Sep 14, 2004

Pickup status*
SHANGHAI CN*
Package received after FedEx cutoff time*
* 2:37 pm

A few posts back, someone mentioned the front being a little bit too reflective. Any other opinions on this? Also, so the speakers sound a good as the previous G4 imac speakers?

thanks.

I'm a little bothered to see in the pictures that the iMac just ships in the iMac box, instead of placing that box inside another plain looking cardboard box. Not only does this advertise what is inside for theives, it makes the iMac box arrive in not so nice condition. I love having my Apple box look great, and it helps when you sell the computer too, so having it show up damaged and dirty is going to be somewhat unpleasent.

i seriously hope you are joking
anyone who buys a computer based on box condition has truly lost it..

the pics look good, has anyone recieved a 20" yet? i still havent decided between the two, i am starting to lean toward the 17" though.. it seems a bit more proportional, and I dont really need the extra screen real estate, although it could come in handy at times..

I totally agree with this; my display shipped the same way, as will my powermac. The boxes I get are always dinged up and stained by grease. The least apple could do is fly them to their respective locations first class. And there should be some complementary peanuts. And a movie.

No, I'm totally serious. One of the selling points of everything Apple does is how nice everything looks, even the packaging. It's the little touches that really make someone appreciate their Apple computer, and being able to offer a used mac buyer the same pleasures afforded a new owner makes them feel better about buying a used computer from you. People love Apple packaging, why do you think people collect it?

As for me, I want my new computer to look great, even its box. Opening the box to your new mac is very exciting, and who wants that experienced ruined when their hands get covered in dirt from the box? Plus, I intend to save the box, having it be all dirty will make that much more difficult.

My first and only Mac didn't ship this way, and I will definitely be disappointed when my new iMac shows up in the state shown in those pictures.

Fantastic pictures. Douglasio, are you a professional photographer?

Sadly, no. Though I do film my friends with my DV Cam committing destructive acts of stupidity, among other things. :D

at least yours has shipped!!! :D
well, I just got off the phone with Fed Ex. Unfortunately, she made a lot of "hmmm" noises. She thought I should have gotten my iMac tomorrow morning at the latest judging from the time it scanned in and she just couldn't understand why it hasn't budged. There is a "slight" possibility it is lost in China (according to her). She wants me to give it till tomorrow morning until I actually freak out though because there may be some type of "computer lagtime with the scans" (what are they on, Gateways?). Also, she said that maybe this was a "Chinese Holiday". Perhaps it was her first day. Also, she sounded Canadian (not that that means anything).

Well working for a courier company, yes, FedEx, there are many things that can delay it. Customs is one, and another could be that the package simply wasn't picked up when it was supposed to have been. Quite frequently I've noticed with Apple shipments, they will enter them into the FedEx system so a pickup scan will show but the physical package may not have been picked up. It my not have been sent to the dock in time or maybe it was going out the next day. The fact that it says Package received after FedEx cutoff time, delays it one day.

Also, from China, I'm pretty sure that the flight goes through Anchorage. I think it may clear customs there too, that could be an added delay. I haven't received notice that mine is shipping yet, but hopefully soon, then I'll be able to track it first hand! :)

thanks, steven_yyz for some possible explanations- at least you didn't use the "Chinese Holiday" excuse. And by the way, I'm actually a fan of Canada. Here's hoping yours ships quicker than mine.

ordering macs overseas

Does anyone have experience ordering macs overseas?

Im living in Japan and plan on ordering a new imac from the japan apple store online, and Im just curious if it takes longer for products like that to come out in other countries. It was available on the web store immediately, but i dont know if that means its in stock or shipping or whatever...

Has anybody in UK got delivery of imac yet? I am waiting for 20" to replace my Toshiba laptop. I am changing to Mac and hence apprehensive!

I don't think so, because kodawarisan had the first opening ceremonies pictures. And this is a japanese site.

Yeah, but kodawarisan has some special connections.. Not to mention the very cool things they do to their macs, A class modder's they are indeed.

As for shipping to non-US destinations, it isn't in fact that it takes less time, for example, Tokyo is 1764km from Shanghai. Compared to say 10452km from Shanghai to Los Angeles. The down side to this is that Apple gives priority to the USA when it comes to releases (ipod minis anyone?) even though less than half their profits are domestic. But i suppose this is justified in that the largest portion of profits ARE domestic. either way, it annoys me. Most large manufactures are the same. I am waiting, patiently annoyed, though accepting the state of the world, for my iMac g5 AND my canon 20d, both of which are in the hands of many consumers across the USA despite the fact that I am actually physically closer to the point of manufacture. oh well, such is life.

oh, and just for condolances I have bought several things from the online apple store in japan, they are excellent. and there was a nominal coolness in being able to engrave my ipod in japanese ;-)
