It's not looking good for us 431 people who's Imac G5s are in limbo in Shanghai. It will be soon be 48 hours with no move. For all we know, someone could have punched in the #'s with the FedEx stickers to get it done and the tag is sitting in each of our job tickets and they are still on the assembly line or worse yet not even made yet. I am hoping there is a problem with FedEx's computer system and I will get a doorbell ring from my FedEx guy Monday or Tuesday.

Mac is minority

I am a windows user and my life with computers has been a bit of love hate realtionship. After listening to my good friend, I decided to go for the Mac. I was planning to buy G4 imac and then restrained myself till new imac came out. I even waited for Keynote!! Now I have ordered 20" G5 imac, I have an interminable wait for at least a month.
I believe Mac make good computers. I also think that they design is functional and joy to use. They used to expensive enough to deter windows users in taking risk on the Mac line but with G5 imac, they are not cheap but inexpensive. But my gripe is that when beautiful computers are produced, why not produce at good numbers to keep supply up to the demand? If Apple really want to increase their share, then they would be better of by planning their production with a bit more thought on anticipation about the market. At this rate, Apple will always be a minority and this will further generate a whole group of people who are are passionate about Mac because they own one, and at times quite unreasonably so. I would love to see a good computer like Mac used more widely so that people do not have to struggle with their PCs. That should also bring the prices of Mac down, without compromising quality.
Quality is in the product and not in a statistic which says how few actually own it.
I hope I enjoy Mac for what it is rather than its brand name.

I just got off the phone with FedEx. They say that they are stuck in Shanghai due to an "airplane shortage". She "has no idea" when they will get an airplane. Though the FedEx site now says mine will be delivered tomorrow morning, she says "probably not". She gave me permission to call back tommorrow and find out the exact same information. I hope Apple gets their money back for these shipments.

Crazy

Ordered 17" iMac on 9-3-04. Ship date was 10-4-04.
Got a email from Apple yestereday-saying it shipped.
It should be here in a hour-I'm not ready!! Just ordered my RAM, have desk housekeeping to do. I have work to do and this is going to be a big distraction. Never thought I would complain about Apple shipping too quickly

Took just over a day to get here-and I went with standard shipping

So everyone who's Apple shipped or those of you who received yours, are they all 17" models?

I guess the 20" with BT will be the next batch to ship. The waiting sucks. Those of you who have their computers stuck over seas that is truly a pisser. I hope it gets sorted out quickly for you all.

I talked to Fed Ex also, first to the International dept, then to the direct shipping. I was told that she didn't know why they were still there, but that 430 of them were "stuck", and she's not allowed to call China to find out why.

My iMac G5 20" BTO with 250GB/AX/BT KB & MO/FCE/1GB RAM shipped from China today. Says delivery by 9/22. Of course depending on which model you believe hurricane Jeanne models will hit North Carolina, where I live.

Move from KS to NC, get rid of tornados, get hurricanes. not sure which I don't like more.

I live here too and I'll be put out if I don't get my computer because of the hurricane. Hopefully it won't get too bad or we won't be affected so much. Congrats on yours shipping! When did you order it? I ordered mine on the 31st and it still hasn't shipped. :(

Hi

Anyone knows which brand makes the 160GB harddrive in the iMac G5?
Can the ppl who got the G5 please check :)

Nearly 20 stuck pixels!

You wont believe this but I have nearly 20 stuck pixels of all different colors on my new 20 inch imac that came in today. It is absolutely ridiculous! Im so mad right now. But at least its bone stock so i can just go to the store. ARRRRG

And it's a long a** flight to miss. Hopefully they'll go straight over the north pole, it's gotta be quicker that way.

In the past when I got my 4G iPod it went from China, to Anchorage, AK. It was really amusing because it left china at 9:30PM or something like that, then arrived at 2:30AM the same day so china actually showed up lower in the 'track' of shipments.

Also the delivery date was way off, it showed up 2 days after leaving china instead of 6 and I paid for standard shipping.

Search the web for tips how to revive stuck pixels - they may not be permanently damaged...

Trekkie, When did you order ? I ordered almost the exact configuration (except amount of ram) as you on the 1st and haven't gotten shipping notification yet.

I ordered mine 8/31 about 8:45 CDT, was in Texas that day.

I read the screen wrong. The Airport Express shipped. I'd marked 'ship all together' and it looks like this:

Open Est. Ship 09/29/2004
AIRPORT EXPRESS BASE STATION-USA

So no, my BTO 20" hasn't shipped :(

Apple store in Newport Beach

The Apple store in Newport Beach got two G5 17" iMacs in yesterday. I was driving by and decided to stop in last night. Some of the store employees were clearing some room for something. I asked if the new iMacs were in and he said they would be on display today.

On my wait out I heard him comment that I was the 22nd person to come in and ask about it that day. And that was only around 5pm. I'm on my way to see them now.

Sounds like the new iMacs are getting a lot of attention. I wonder if any of the employees will know anything about being able to replace midplane parts with upgrades.

I'm glad that someone who ordered a 20" with BT has finally received a shipping notice. Ordered mine about 6 AM on the 31st so mine should be moving down the line.

In terms of shipping, I read that there are 20 16" iMacs on a pallet and 16-18 (?) 20" pallets. Assuming that FedEx is using a MD-11 how many pallets can they fit on a plane?

I also think that Apple is probably filling the plane. They indicated when they released the last quarter's figures that gross margin % would go down when the iMacs shipped due to air freighting them. I would guess that they have a deal with FedEx to send planes just for the iMacs. This would mean that delays might be due to a mechanical problem that delayed the flight. If it is a "charter" flight then it might go from Anchorage to the most central location for redistributing the load - heavy on customers in the east/ Might next go to the east.

I would also bet that customs paperwork is taken care of while the plane is in the air, with only periodic sampling done.

At some point in the future there will probably be a story on the roll out of the G5 imac and we'll be able to learn of the complexity of getting this thing off the assembly line and into the customer's hands.

Trekkie, I feel your pain. I chose to have my stuff shipped all together and Apple decided to split up the shipments on their own. So far I've gotten two emails informing me that my Apple Care and Airport Express have shipped.

My heart sinks each time. :(

Sorry, took me too long to register and post that last one. Mine hasn't shipped either (20"/250GB/256/BT Keyboard and Mouse/AE).

I'm surprised that Apple wouldn't honor your shipment request. I agree it would be a sinking feeling to just receive delivery of AppleCare.

Dr. Stealth

My wife's iBook took the same routing to Memphis and then sent to Oklahoma City before coming to Tulsa. I'll live with the routing through Memphis if Apple would only ship my 20"!

Enjoy the iMac and let us know how you like it.
