Ugh. Now that people are reporting shipping you've upped my need to fanatically check the Apple site. I ordered at 6:45AM PDT on 8/31. Looks like the cut off was a few hours prior to that

Well it s does appear that the stock order no longer have a backlog, if that one guy had his shipped the same day of purchase. I can't even imagine why there is still such as a delay with the BT.

To get a built in BT you need to do a BTO. Same if you want to bump the HD up to the max or get FinalCut Express cheap.
While it is "challenging" to wait for a BTO it might be worth it, especially if the local retailers have a long waiting list - you might get one faster with an order direct to Apple. If you are not going to use BT then I would recommend putting an order in directly with Apple as that may be the fastest way to actually take delivery. If you want a larger hard drive or FCE then A BTO is the way to go, otherwise a stock may be sent very fast.

Trekkie, I ordered after you. I ordered mine on 8/31 at 12pm.
So I don't know what the hold up would be.

Well that just bites. Wonder what formula I have that says mine wasn't built today
Just got home from work and waiting for me was my brand new iMac G5 20"
One word to describe this thing - "WOW"
The pictures on the Apple site really do not do this thing justice, looks much better in person. Screen is massive but the rest of it is all so tiny tucked in away behind the screen, is amazing how they got it all in there.
Wasnt a fan of the design the first time I saw the pic's - but it really is great - the white space at the bottom certainly doesnt seem too big - especially on this 20" one - imagine that it is much more proportioned than on the 17" one.
The screen is absolutely great - noticed one deadd pixel right at the bottom so is well out of the way and don't even notice it with the dock there covering it up - really bright and clear, as well as LOADS of space to work on! Is whisper quiet too - can hardly hear the fan.
Is really really heavy too - but seems to be so sturdy on the comparatively small stand - is amazing!

even monkeys eventually stop pressing the bar when no more bananas come out of the chute, but not me. obsessive checking on order status ends with the magical message, "shipped".

Except you forgot to think about the next stage of your addiction. The next stage is the check the FedEx website endlessly until it comes to your door step. That's what I'm doing now.............just checked and still "Held in Indy"..........and it is just as bad as waiting for it to ship in some ways!

I had to check. After ala2's post I could stand it no longer. I checked and there is surprise surprise, no change. Still to be shipped OOB October 1st.
I order later in the day than trekkie, 11 something PM the night of the 31st so who knows when mine will ship...

Also, I found the same computer but one made after the Philips lawsuit, so instead of PET it was called CBM. I got it at the flea market for $10, ebayed it for $100! Not a bad return!
Back on topic, now. I received an email on 9/21 saying that my airport express had shipped. It came on 9/22! I am assuming that these notices are sent a day or more after the item actually shippped? Today, I got a notice saying the my iMac G5 had shipped. I checked the tracking number at fedex.com, and there is no info on it yet? What gives? Just based on the speed at which I received the airport, I am led to speculate that fedex should already have the iMac. Oh well, I won't complain, regardless. My estimated shipping date was 10/20. And my little indigo G3 is killing me!
Has anyone found that the Order Status at Apple updates to "Shipped" during the day BEFORE you get an e-mail" I have this feeling that if there is no e-mail from Apple in the morning there will be no change on the order status site. Has anyone had this happen???
