very cool, i don't think i could buy a 5-6 year old pc and have the same experience i did with osx/imac g3. very impressive.

jaromski

Not only wouldn't this be remotely possible (imagine putting XP Pro on a machine that probably doesn't have USB ports) but even if the machine accepted the installation (and could house the bloat and start up), performance would be so poor the efforts would be wasted.

OS X is the only OS I've ever heard of that actually flies faster on older hardware with each new version.

Nice 20" !

One word to describe this thing - "WOW"
Well topic like this wouldnt be complete without pic's - so here they are!

Thanks for the pics Alex, it's helping me through the waiting for my 20" BT OOB 9/30.
BTW do you live in Weatherfield? I've seen those net curtains on Coronation Street!

Holy crap, you sure are going to love how fast your new Mac is!

sweet! compared to the rig i'm on now anything will be a stratospheric improvement :).

do you think they've started shipping this config yet?

17" Shipped! ---- 20" Still Waiting

Ordered both on 8/31/04 - 7:13 AM PST.

Got the magic email this afternoon (2:30 CDT). It still hasn't registered on the Fedex tracking page so I have no clue where it is at the moment....

Too bad the 17" was for my Business Manager...and not me. But movement IS movement. I'll take it.

Here is what seems to be holding up shipments so far:
20" iMacs w/Bluetooth/KB+Mouse, 250 GB HD, extra memory, FCE pre-installed

I've seen word of similar shipments, I have a feeling that we'll all be surprised pretty soon.

(Note: there is no direct scientific evidence to support my claims)

I ordered the 20" iMac w/Bluetooth/KB+Mouse, 160 GB HD, Airport Card, 256mg. And still no shipment. Ordered on 8/31.

Must be something else holding up shipment.

What I meant was, many orders that haven't shipped yet seem to have one or more of these things configured.

I only upped the RAM and the Hard Drive Space - I didn't add Bluetooth. If they're shipping iMacs with 1GB of Ram and/or 250GB hard drives then I don't see why it would be delayed.

Although I don't know if FCE is pre-installed or not. Hopefully not.

Hey everyone, great thread you've all got going here.

My first computer was an Apple IIe, later followed by a Mac LC III. Then around 1996 or so, after my parents wouldn't cough up the dough for the Power Mac 7500 I had my eyes on, I was forced into the dark world of Windows, and have been stuck there ever since. Win 95 was a joke, Win 98 got somewhat better, and then I thought XP was pretty cool, until it's recently been plagued with viruses, security holes, and spyware, to the point where it's now practically unusable. As soon as I saw this new iMac, I knew it was time to go back.

I googled "iMac shipping" last week, landed here, and have been watching with earnest ever since. It feels great to be caught up in kind of excitement, which doesn't happen in my life nearly enough, I'm sorry to say.

Well, here is my iMac story:

9/15 - Ordered, stock 20"
9/20 - Shipped
9/23 - Just arrived this morning at my mom's place

Wow, how's that for lead time? I'm now anxiously waiting to get off work so I can head over there and check it out.

I found it interesting that so many people were scrambling to get this "magical" Crucial memory everyone's been raving about, for some reason. Well, once I saw that my iMac was arriving today, all I had to do was head over to my friendly local computer store on my lunch break (believe it or not, a few of these still exist, since there are still a few people like me that keep them alive but not buying everything online), and picked up these sweet babies:

Kingston 512 MB DDR400 sticks. Only $89 each. Woooo! No shipping hassles, no waiting for them to come in, just went over and got them. The price reflects a discount they gave me for paying in cash. Try finding an online store that'll do that for you!

Good iMacing to you all!

iMac Shipped !

I ordered a BTO iMac on 8/30 at 3:42 AM PST. I just got notice that it has been shipped. Here's what I got

17" iMac G5
Upgraded to 1 GB memory, 2 DIMMs
Upgraded to 160 GB hard drive
Added Airport Extreme card
Ordered bluetooth, wireless keyboard, and wireless mouse
Everything else was stock

:D

Sigh!

Ordered 08/31/2004
03:17 AM PST
20"/512MB/AE/BT bundle

Still Open

There are multiple thread in the apple discussion group about not using the kingston Value Ram in a G5. Appear to be lower quality ram. Hopefully you got there better ram.

See powermac G5 >expansion > Ram success story in the apple discussion groups

I forgot to mention that my 1GB ram is in 2 DIMMs. I'm going to call westworld again tomorrow to check on the status.

and for a bit of off-topic news, here's the new U2 single:

Vertigo

could have used a guitar solo but it's pretty good.

I ordered a 20"/1gb/250gb/BT/WK/WM, which appears to be one combination not yet produced. Until today, my shipping time stated "on or before 9/29." Now it has changed to say simply, "estimated shipping on 9/29."

This doesn't sound promising to me.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I got that config + Final Cut Express. Still says 'on or before 9/29'

I am consoling myself at this moment knowing that it is 7:48AM Shanghai time and maybe, just maybe they're putting together my new iMac.

I know, I'm thinking the same thing, except that I ordered mine on 9/1, so I have a feeling that I have an even longer time to wait. Man, I need to do something else to occupy my time!

Waiting is Crucial

One more data point to add:

IMG5 20/1.8/256MB/250GB/SD/APX/BT/WL KBL
ordered 08/31/2004 06:42 PM PST

Still shows OOB 09/30/2004 :(

My 2GB of Crucial are still waiting!

I keep thinking thoughts like that too. Also, I wonder how many shifts they have working over there.

Permutations, Inc.

I see that Rdowns has ALMOST the identical configuration as mine...but I ordered 160 GB HD.

And so on through the list (thanks everyone, for posting the specs). Seems as if BTs are being built and are shipping, but some are lagging, each with a slight permutation.

At first, it appeared Apple was shipping stocks -- no BTs at all. Now they're shipping some BTs, but those of us trailing seem to have some slight difference from the other.

Could it be that Apple is now running batches of BTs and grouping them based on the most numerous group first, then the next most numerous, et al.? Probably.

If so, each batch is likely smaller than the previous run....please tell me there is not some minimum group size that they'll simply skip over, day after day, week after week, month after month....

That would be cruel.

What about order date? Jeez, those of us who jumped on the new machine immediately (9/31 3:05 a.m) ought to get some consideration in the process.

I'm whining now. I admit it. :(

I don't care. I've earned it.

While I doubt that they are running two shifts (yet) I do think they could justify running one day on the weekend, even if it is only every other weekend. The demand between now and Christmas is going to go out of sight from what I have been hearing, with some stores having 100+ people on their waiting lists.

Oh well, mine will ship when it ships. I still have a 5 month old 15" PB to keep me going until it does!

To the Apple Store

So I caved on waiting for my BTO. I didn't order until I saw them at the store - fell in love at first sight, of course they do look a little funny with the chin, but you get used to it...

The Apple Store called me tonight and told me they had a 17" Superdrive in that I could pick up - so I opted out on the BT (ship date was Oct. 19 and I was already checking my status every 10 minutes). Amazing, I only had to wait a week for the stock model and this in DC! So now I am living without BT, but I don't mind the cords so much now that I'm not waiting until the 19th! This thing definitely is a step up from the 6400!

You don't say?

That's awesome! I bet that if I don't get a shipping notice tomorrow I may end up down at the Apple Store in Tampa this weekend to pick up a stock 20". I need to be patient... I need to be patient...

Congrats!

How would I do it....trivial pursuit

If an iMac G5 rolled off the line, tested and ready for shipping...wouldn't the logical order of events be:

1. Scan in a completed product.
2. Headquarters (China) notified.
3. Headquarters (U.S.) notified.
4. Check customer's credit (again). Charge it, if ok.
5. Headquarters (U.S.) to China: Ok, ship it.
6. China: box it, label it, ship it.
7. FedEx receives it.
8. HQ U.S. sends email
9. HQ U.S. updates Order Status Page.

Based on this logic, I check cc page first, then email, then Apple.

I can't believe I'm thinking about this level of detail...oh well, 3-day weekend, so I've got lots of time.

Someone please feel free to punch holes in this logic.

Frankly, I've never bought anything I've been so interested in as this computer.
