Ordered BTO Aug. 31 (Apple Canada Online Store), fixed Apple's unauthorized change in config. Sept. 1, estimated ship date Sept. 30, actual ship date Sept. 24, 1st FedEx delivery attempt Sept. 28 (wasn't expecting it), received Sept. 29 (standard shipping).

THANK GOD! A Canadian, with a 20" iMac in his hands - and a BTO one at that!!! There is hope for mine arriving soon. Although I ordered from a reseller vs from Apple Store Online, but still there is hope....
O' Canada.....

Hmm, sounds promising on the ship time! I'll definitely get it through the online Apple store. As for config, I'm planning on upgrading the HD, but still trying to decide about memory - Apple's gouging on that is a real pain! I'm deciding between:
  1. order with 256, buy an external 256 to match. 512 is probably enough for a while, and I'd have the advantage of matched RAM - but would have to discard to upgrade in the future...
  2. accept the gouge and upgrade the DIMM to 1 512 - no matched RAM, but would provide the nicest upgrade path, as soon as I could afford it.
  3. leave the 256, buy an additional 512 - I'd get the most memory this way, but it's a bit pricier, no easy upgrade and not matched.

Any suggestions? It's going to be a long two weeks, trying to make up my mind about this and other stuff. *sigh*

i say go for your 3rd option, and later replace the 256 with a 512 to match. just don't buy ram from apple it's a rip off try OWC or crucial.

I really grow tired of people claiming there is a gouge.

If you went with 256MB, and went to order something else...

512MB DIMM is $99 at Crucial.com. I'm sure you could find it a tiny bit cheaper but I'd want a reputable RAM manufacturer, there are a few others but they are my favorite.

Two are $198. On Apple.com if I wanted 1GB of RAM it's an additional $225. $27 for having it done when it hits your door isn't a gouge. $300 is a gouge. $27 is a price difference of someone who focuses on selling RAM vs. someone who sells a system.

I went with Option #4. Ordered it with 2x512MB RAM and when it gets here it'll have 1GB of RAM and I plug it in and fire it up.

Hey Trekkie.....where did you get the update on shipping status for Oct. 4? I just checked my fedex tracking and I'm still on Oct. 3 in Shanghai. Been sitting there for a week with the rest of them.

Might as ask us what the weather will be like next week! :D

It appears that if you are ordering a stock system you'll get it quickly, and if you magically order the right upgrades, you'll get it quickly.

But heaven forbid you get the right combo of options that takes a month to build.

Though honestly, I'd guess that if you are buying it at or after 10/15/04 that things might be getting better.

Unfortunately the 'I'm in Canada' is a bit of a wildcard. I've not seen much success yet in Canada in the postings here, though most of those are because they went through a reseller of some kind.

It should not really matter which option you choose. If and when Apple gets organized, shipping should not vary whether BTO or CTO. Seems to be a matter of having all the correct inventory in the right place at the right time.

WOW!

Well I ahve been able to finally sit down with my new iMac today.

This machine is so nice! I lucked out and no dead pixels and as far as I can tell no real noise problems. Couple of things play into that:

First, I live in an old house that has window units so it is always loud in here anyway. But even when I shut off both unit and the TV. I could only just barely hear a kind of whrrr noise, not high pitched at all. Now keep in mind I could hear my old pc running and boot up was painfully loud. So all in all I got lucky and missed some of the problems others have talked about.

As far as speed, once I changed the setting to highest for the processor it started moving. Set at auto the internet was slower than my 12" PB but once I changed the setting, it all worked out.

Haven't uploaded the pics yet, but once I get that done I'll upload a couple.

Oh yeah one other thing on the waiting for it story, once I got back to town and got over to FedEx, the lady couldn't find it. It took her about 20 minutes to track it down in the building. She kept coming out asking if it was a box or not, what it might look like. So all the way up until I had it in hand this was one frustrating wait.

I have to give Apple full credit though. I still received it only one day after they said it would ship, and that one day was my fault it was here by the date they had said it would ship by.

Sorry to those that are getting delay letters, that majorly sucks. And Trekkie, I'm really glad to see yours is finally logging some air miles. Not too much longer. :)

MY Imac G5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Sweetness. Im excited to get it. 20inch, 1 gig DDR, bluetooth, everything etc! Swwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Both my shipping notice airbill # and the waybill number off the invoice showed 'in transit to Subic Bay PH'. The waybill showed a 'scan' each day in China and the airbill showed nothing until today where it now shows in transit to Subic Bay.

Everyting works perfectly

To anyone who's got their BTO iMac with Apple memory upgrade, did the extra memory come already installed, or did you have to take the back off and install it yourself?

Thanks

M

BT w/wireless KB and mouse...512 MB...Airport Card...no dead pixels...no fan noise (once I cranked up the A/C...set it at 75 F or lower).

I LOVE this machine. Every time I sit down, I discover some new wonder.

Hang in there folks, it WILL be worth the wait. I know...ordered 8/31 3:05 AM PST...Delivered 9/29.

Moog: it came installed. I don't want to open it until I buy another 1.5 G

It's absolutely fantastic...check out iTunes radio...Virgin UK...over my Airport to the 5.1 Dolby...haven't turned it off for > 48 hours.

I guess I lucked out-- I walked into the Apple store in Arizona on the 16th of September and picked one right up. I haven't ever been that lucky before with a Mac.

So far it seems like a great little machine. I don't have any complaints about its speed compared to my G4 Imac.

Kuehne & Nagel says that flight was booked for 10/02. That's all so far... So what's the next step on the status page?

Hey Trekkie,

Thanks for all of your feedback, but I have have to respectfully disagree on the definition of gouging. See my math:

If I want to upgrade to 1x512, then on the Apple Store it will cost me $105, and $315 to go to 1GB. Meanwhile, buying 1GB seperately would cost me around $224, +/- depending on the manufacturer. So that's an extra $91, not to mention the 256MB that is already included in the base price (which is approx 1/2 the price of 512, so $55). So for 512, that's a difference of ~$57 or 55%; and for 1GB, that's a price difference of ~$145, or 64%.

IMO, I consider 55%-64% gouging, whereas under 10% I'd only consider it premium pricing. :) And I give no credit for installation, because a) it's trivial, and b) they have to install something in it anyways.

Not to mention I have to pay an extra $100 on the price of the system simply because I live in Canada. (Doing the conversion based on the difference in store prices and conversion rates at www.xe.com). Most other companies generally accept a slightly lower markup in Canada, not a higher one.

Altogether, doing stuff like that rubs me the wrong way - not a major issue, but one enough to make me say, "fine, I'll get it somewhere else, even if it is quite a bit more trouble". But I'm the same person who refuses to buy concessions at the movies because of the pricing, simply on principle. :D

Right now I'm leaning towards IBSNOWEDIN's suggestion, w/768MB. (Hmm, is there an interesting story behind that username, BTW?)

BTO 20" Shipped on 10/4.

Hey, all,

Overnight (early 10/4), I received notice that my IMAC20/1.8G5/1GB/250G/SD/BT/APX/LL just shipped. I ordered on 9/2 and my system was promised on or before 10/4.

It killed me that I didn't get it as early as some did, but at least it was sent "on time."

Thanks for posting pix, etc., it has made the wait much more fun!

Fedex Sux!

My Fedex tracking page showed "in transit" from Shanghai to Subic Bay 20 hours ago and it still says the same thing. What's up with that?

I picture a 747 flying in a big circle over the Pacific.

iMac G5 and HP Rebate

Question for everyone. I am thinking of ordering my 20" BTO iMac G5 today. I see that Apple and HP have a $99 rebate for the purchase of an HP printer. The rebate expires at the end of October. It seems that the likelyhood of me getting my iMac before the end of October, or even it shipping before then, is not very good. Does anyone think I will still have trouble getting the rebate if the computer doesn't ship before the end of the month?

Thanks!

Eric

All Methods Of Tracking Are Not Created Equal

You can track your imacG5 shipping status by inputing the tracking number into fedex's website and get one list of status, or you can input the waybill number in and get a different list of status and finally you can input your Apple Order number into the Apple Stores order status (if you ordered from Apple) and click the fedex tracking number link and get even another, different, status. I like the Apple Store tracking link as it says Oct. 04 left fedex ramp. Shipped Sept. 29th......hope your's are on the same pallet and maybe we'll all see our imacs this week.

Has anyone in this forum ordered an Imac G5 1.6 Ghz ? If so has it shipped? Havent seen any mentioned, but just thought i would ask and see.

I have yeah. Ordered 9/1. Estimated shipping on or before 9/30. On 10/1 got delay email pushing estimated shipping back to 10/6. They miss that 10/6 date and there's gonna be a lot of complaining

When'd you put your order in/what's the stuatus? Hang in there. I got to goof around with the 17" 1.6 floor model over at the Apple store here. It's gonna be worth the wait. That's what I keep tellin myself anyway. :D

Mine shipped last night too!!! No delay e-mail...whew!:D

For those still waiting...its an IMAC20/1.8G5/512/250G/SD/BT/APX/LL ordered on 9/7 with a shipping OOB Oct 6. Notice my credit card balance reduced (but not charged) last Monday. It's shipping 2 days earlier than promised...hurray!!! Apple Fedex link say delivery by 10/20, but it should likely get here by end of the week...just in time for the long weekend. Fingers crossed.

Yep, I'm still waiting. I ordered Aug. 31 and oob is Oct 5. Today my order status changed to "shipped" - a closer look revealed that it is estimated shipping. Maybe tomorrow...

EDIT: And simultaneously, it's shipped !!! :D

Well, fun with fedex tracking today.

My airbill # shows it bouncing through Subic bay at 1:02AM and 1:15AM on 10/4 as departed, yet it has yet to land.

The waybill # shows it leaving China for Subic bay over 22 hours ago, so the plane is circling the pacific or went left when it should have gone right.

If I click on the link from the Apple store I have it leaving Subic Bay and arriving in Japan now (I don't have a globe in front of me, but didn't it go east, then go back west?) Little rusty on my AP geography.
