Playing The Tracking Game

Well, fun with fedex tracking today.

My airbill # shows it bouncing through Subic bay at 1:02AM and 1:15AM on 10/4 as departed, yet it has yet to land.

The waybill # shows it leaving China for Subic bay over 22 hours ago, so the plane is circling the pacific or went left when it should have gone right.

If I click on the link from the Apple store I have it leaving Subic Bay and arriving in Japan now (I don't have a globe in front of me, but didn't it go east, then go back west?) Little rusty on my AP geography.

As Alice once said, curioser and curioser

At least this gives us something to do with our old macs while waiting for new.

Yeah, the Fedex link from the Apple store does show more detail. My latest status shows "arrived at Fedex ramp Narita-Shi JP" 10/04 at 9:25 AM.

That's 23 hours ago, right?

So, is it just sitting there or is there just a lot of lag time in Fedex's update system?

Well, at least our systems have each other. Same thing mine says.

Question for everyone. I am thinking of ordering my 20" BTO iMac G5 today. I see that Apple and HP have a $99 rebate for the purchase of an HP printer. The rebate expires at the end of October. It seems that the likelyhood of me getting my iMac before the end of October, or even it shipping before then, is not very good. Does anyone think I will still have trouble getting the rebate if the computer doesn't ship before the end of the month?

Thanks!

Eric
I think Amazon have a $100 cash rebate offer at present....

You may wish to check that out too.

Hmm, sounds promising on the ship time! I'll definitely get it through the online Apple store. As for config, I'm planning on upgrading the HD, but still trying to decide about memory - Apple's gouging on that is a real pain! I'm deciding between:
  1. order with 256, buy an external 256 to match. 512 is probably enough for a while, and I'd have the advantage of matched RAM - but would have to discard to upgrade in the future...
  2. accept the gouge and upgrade the DIMM to 1 512 - no matched RAM, but would provide the nicest upgrade path, as soon as I could afford it.
  3. leave the 256, buy an additional 512 - I'd get the most memory this way, but it's a bit pricier, no easy upgrade and not matched.

Any suggestions? It's going to be a long two weeks, trying to make up my mind about this and other stuff. *sigh*
Be careful about "matched" RAM - according to some members, 1 module of Apple 256 MB RAM and 1 module of Crucial 256 MB RAM do NOT activate the 128 bit memory bus - you may need 2 sticks of Apple RAM or 2 sticks of 3rd party RAM. I know that several people (including myself) have listed their Apple RAM on the MacRumors marketplace because of this problem - you might have some luck purchasing RAM there.

I have yeah. Ordered 9/1. Estimated shipping on or before 9/30. On 10/1 got delay email pushing estimated shipping back to 10/6. They miss that 10/6 date and there's gonna be a lot of complaining

When'd you put your order in/what's the stuatus? Hang in there. I got to goof around with the 17" 1.6 floor model over at the Apple store here. It's gonna be worth the wait. That's what I keep tellin myself anyway. :D

Ordered 9/15, estimated ship date OOB 10/14. They days keep getting slower and slower.

Finally left the ramp in Shanghai!

I agree that the best (and most complete) FedEx info is coming from the Apple store tracking link (if you placed your order through the Apple store). It shows my iMac as "Left FedEx Ramp" (still in Shanghai though).

Question: How long (barring the odd circling plane patterns some have assumed here ;) ) might it be before my family can enjoy their very first Mac near Seattle WA now that the package has left the ramp???

Thanks, gang! I've been hanging with the whole group of you since the beginning of this thread - which is huuuuuge! I can't imagine ANYthing in the Wintel realm that would generate *this* kind of excitement! And Apple has (finally) built *my* Mac - the one I've been waiting them to build for the past 10 years as I struggled through Windows update after reformat after update.

Web order status

Hi everyone, I'm a fresh switcher and I'm waiting for my first Mac, a 17" iMac G5 1.8 with wireless keyboard, Air Port and 1x512MB DIMM BTO options. I've placed the order 9/28 and the order was placed in the "Open" status on 10/1 (I've paid by wire transfer). I've read this rather long thread :) but I couldn't extrapolate how much will it take to move from the "Open" status to the "Shipped" status. Any hint?

Thanks,
Sandro

Yeah it gets real goofy over there and none of it seems to make sense. You may remember mine took a similar route. Shanghai - Subic - Japan. But mine went to Osaka and not Narita as most did. For the few of us tha t this happened to, we thought it would go striaght to Memphis as there were no flights to Anchorage from Osaka. They must have trucked it over to Narita, because it ended up in Anchorage then Indy. Which seems to be the normal arriving points for the iMac.

As far as wait times, I think I hit the high end on wait times as it seemed I just missed the next flight out at each stop along the way. My macine shipped on Friday and I received it on Thursday. The most painful of the delays were Shanghai and Indy. Shanghai simply because it sat there for so long, 4 days I think. And Indy, 1 night, because I think I got held up in customs and missed the flight. (all the security seals were broken on my box, so they must have opened it up.)

So I would say everyone in this group that received notice last week will have them by Thursday latest.

You might get that iMac G5 sooner than you think.

Like most of you I am a bit excited about my new iMac. I ordered it on the day they announced it and the Fed Ex site showed it shipped on 9/29. Then it was sitting in Shang Hai. I decided that perhaps I shouldn't have selected "ground" for my shipping service as apparently it was going to be on the slow boat from China (Showing delivery date of 10/18- yikes!) I decided since it was sitting there maybe I could call Apple and pay extra to upgrade the shipping. I'm glad I called because the Apple tech told me that the FedEx site was having problems and the information was WRONG. He said I should start looking for my iMac this week (He said probably Tuesday or Wednesday). If that's the case then "boo" to FedEx and yay! to Apple!

I sincerely hope the Apple rep you spoke with knows what he's talking about and wasn't just blowing smoke in your face. I too received notice that my iMac was shipping on 9/29 - it spent (according to FedEx tracking) 4 days in Shanghai where it *still* "sits" (although the status is now "Left FedEx Ramp").

10/18 is "only" a couple of more weeks - and I'll admit it's two days earlier than Apple's original guesstimate of delivery OOB 10/20 so I'm trying to stay happy and not obsess over this (my wife would tell you it's too late for that) while I wait for - and track - this Switcher's very first Mac.

I asked the Apple rep at least 5 times if he was right and he assured me it was true (I got his name just in case I need to reprimand him). My tracking stuff says the same as yours (just left the dock at Shang Hai). I did order a new iPod and an airport extreme a few weeks ago. The airport extreme was delivered from Cupertino, CA and the iPod from Shang Hai. I actually got the iPod on the same day as the Airport Extreme, so it could happen. Perhaps that's why I'm optimistic.

You are going to love your Mac! My spouse is a software engineer who was PC'd for a long time until he started playing around on my Power Book a few years ago. He's totally converted. He has his own Power Book now and has converted most of the guys he works with as well. I think he's just as excited about the new iMac as he is working from home all week in case they deliver it!

Hi Sandro, congratulations on your decision to be a switcher. Don't think that you will be at all disappointed. I'm confident of the pleasure that you have on the way. It seems that the times vary.

Thanks! I won't be disappointed, I know! :)

About the varying times: I saw times as low as 9 days from order to shipping, and more than 25 days for the same things to happen. But they don't seem to be related to anything. Did you notice the same?

THANK GOD! A Canadian, with a 20" iMac in his hands - and a BTO one at that!!! There is hope for mine arriving soon. Although I ordered from a reseller vs from Apple Store Online, but still there is hope....
O' Canada.....

Any news? I ordered mine from a reseller too but haven't had any calls today. I think they're getting a bit tired of hearing from me...

I think all of Apple's imports to Canada get sorted in Memphis, then go through customs in Winnipeg. My iMac did, as did my iPod (which even went from Winnipeg to Vancouver before backtracking to Calgary).

As I posted earlier in this thread, I'm not convinced that expedited shipping has made any difference in the arrival dates of iMacs shipped so far.

To anyone in Europe who tracked their IMac through the apecode web site, did the order status ever get past the "Flight Booked" status? I'm trying to work out if it's already passed into the hands of TNT so I can call them up and bug them... :)

You're right about the waste of $43 for exp. shipping. But I've set up Distribution networks with FedEx that run all west coast stuff MEM-SEA-YVR and then east; or even direct. Why Apple would want to clear in Winterpeg is beyond me. FedEx brokers and pre-clears IPDD freight before the stuff ever lands. As long as the paperwork matches, it's out the door as fast as the lasers can scan it.

Hey, my iMac has finally made it North America! :)

Fedex now shows 12:53 PM arrived at sort facility Anchorage AK.
From here its on to Indianapolis I think.

No news on my end ... I emailed my reseller to get an updated but so far no answer. Trust me the SECOND I hear that it has arrived I will be sure to post it here! :)

EDIT: Within a minute of me posting the above reply I got a call from my reseller that it's on it's way and should be here before the weekend. Yeah!!! I'll keep you posted. :) It's a good Monday! a very good Monday.

Indianapolis tonight?

I just did a little research on flytecomm.com and there's a Fedex flight today that is scheduled to leave Anchorage at 3:00 PM local time and arrive at Indianapolis at 11:30 PM tonight.

For those interested in tracking it, the flight number is FDX5146.

The equipment listed is an MD11.

What are the odds that our (Trekkies, mine, others) iMacs will make this flight?

same here... I have three tracking numbers, no item of them get past the flight booked status. That's annoying!

Back in town

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to say "Hi!" I'm back in town and have finally been able to spend some time with my new iMac! The thing is great and I'm having a lot of fun trasnferring over everything from my PowerBook (12") and getting used to all of this fabulous screen real estate.

I will have some requisite photos later on tonight hopefully!
