Well I ran home from lunch to find it still hung at the 2hr 41 Min mark, so I restarted and it is starting over. Hopefully when I get home tonight it'll be finished and I can start to enjoy.

There is something intimidating about a 20" screen firing up with an Apple in the center almost as big as a small childs head though

How did you determine the burn speed? Are you using Toast? What other media did you try besides Ritek and Fuji?

Burning in toast. Tried Datawrite, Ritek and Fuji 4x DVD-R. All burn at 4x fine in my G4 iMac under Toast. Only the Fugi would burn at 4x in the G5 iMac. The best speed for the others was only 2x.

Looks like the drive in the G5 iMac is going to be very selective on DVD-R media. :(

eBay, or go to various Mac Magazine sites and check the ads there are lots of refurbished dealers around.

I bought a 333 megahertz Imac with 98 megs of RAM, 6 gigs hard drive for $299. I also bought Hell Cab (game) for $6. Megawatts.com.

I didn't order from macmall, just wondering if you are also in New Orleans?

ps, My firewire cable shipped today. :) Ordered yesterday :D I'll start FedEx tracking later tonight.

Just waiting on the new ram now, I may just keep ordering stuff, that stress was kind of addictive.

Well, to paraphrase Homer Simpson...aughghghghghg....20 inch screen goodness.

My god, no wonder women say size matters. :D

Sorry couldn't resist.

Anyway, just got booted up after applying all the updates. My only weirdness was I had to copy all the files after the transfer into my home directory. This may be because when it started the transfer it hung at 2 hours 41 min for 3 hours and I rebooted. But now everything appears fine.

Ripping the pictures off my CF and getting them up on the web and then I'll post em!

Sweeeeet. my eyes almost hurt and I have to turn my head to read things. wow.

Mine is still stuck in Indy. Sadness. Now FedEx says Apple didn't send paperwork documenting the value. How could they forget to send this documentation on some packages and not others. I'm sure I'm not alone here, but that doesn't make me feel any better.

Do you have any papers to prove these are your papers?

Criswell, what papers are you referring to? My iMac is in IN right now - suffering from what is hopefully just a 24-hour case of "Regulatory agency clearance delay." Let's hope this gets resolved quickly. In this age of electronic media, I can't imagine it taking Apple very long to fax or e-mail something to FedEx in IN.

I hope I can sleep tonight... must restrain from refreshing the FedEx page during the night!

Now that really does make me mad. My G5 was on the same plane with others who got there Mac today.....yes....mine is also stuck in Indy. Still no update saying it's been released from clearance. Hard to imagine how Apple could forget to include value documentation, seems odd to me.

My iMac 'shipped' last Wednesday, but it's still in Shanghai - they said I might get it by Friday, but I seriously doubt it at this stage. I ordered it on the 31st of August, with the 3-4 week shipping time making it seem like it'd be on time for going back to uni. Oh well - I'll just have to wait. (It's a BTO shipping to the UK.)

While Awaiting Release From Indy Prison

I still haven't located a 6pin to 6pin firewire cable locally. Has anyone else opted to not do a transfer? I have everything backed up and all I think I would have to do is deal with my cable modem. I don't mind losing my bookmarks but if there's something I'm not thinking of......please slap me in the forehead and remind me that I be foolish to not transfer. Since it looks like I have the time to order a firewire cable online and probably get it before Indy releases my imac.

Thanks,

Marlene

Mine is there too

To those who are stuck in IN, your iMac and mine are probably on the same pallet. How does one define "Delay"?

Funny thing is, my iMac landed in Alaska and then flew over my head (in Seattle) to land in Indianapolis to get delayed further.

I hear you. Mine is sitting in Indy too. Keeping yours and everyone elses that are waiting to pass regulatory clearance.

I'm in AZ so I don't think I'm getting it tomorrow. I'm going to France on Saturday and with the way my luck has been it will be delayed until after I'm gone. I'll be very bummed if that happens. I won't get to test it out until the end of October... Boo, hoo!

Hey I'm in AZ too. Is this a trend that it seems that those of us whose iMacs are still in Indy are in the West? What's up with that?

Almost the same here. My BTO IMG5 20/1.8/512MB/160GB/SD/BT/AP/B shipped last Thursday 30th and it's also still sitting in Shanghai with status of Shipment Picked Up (CNSHA02) 30 Sep 2004 10:58

I don't really know which papers they mean. I did call Apple and explain the situation to them, and the woman I spoke with put me on hold for a while before reporting that "all the documentation had been sent," it was a normal customs issue and the iMac should be "back on the road" at some point soon. "Maybe tomorrow, but you should receive it by Monday." I am so deflated right now, but I don't know what else to do.

I was wondering if anyone could post a pic of the graphics card. It's supposedly located behind the metal "G5" sheath.

Thanks,
JOD8FY

still waiting...

Well congrats to all of you who have gotten your imacs, especially those that ordered on Aug. 31. We all know you definitely deserve your imacs.

But I have to say I'm very jealous. I ordered 9/19, and I still haven't recieved the precious e-mail from Apple. My Apple order status still says 10/19. I was really hoping to be surprised like so many others and see mine ship early! I ordered a 20-inch, 1GB, 250G, with BT wireless mouse/keyboard. How is everyone else who ordered around that time doing? Have they shipped? I'm getting worried b/c I'll be going out of town the 16-23. My luck it will ship and I'll miss it and then it will get sent back to the warehouse! Oh, the trauma!

Oh, and thanks to all who are posting pictures. It really keeps those of us dreaming of the day ours arrives! It's funny how even though we've seen many pictures of the imac, that each time someone else posts photos its like Christmas all over again! :)

Thanks, and good luck to everyone on early delivery dates!

Obligatory iMac G5 Opening Porn

Well, the box arrived. In pretty good shape except for a ding at the bottom. No majorly crushed corners like some experienced. For those of us that analy keep our boxes this is A Good Thing (tm)

Of course I'm going to probably obsess about that sticker being right on the screen. Anyway.

My little helper came along while I was putting the knife up above his reach from slicing the tape.

CRW_6401-vi.jpg

(and for those of you that care, he's one year old, and a whopping 32" tall)

The obligatory 'freshly opened' box shot.

CRW_6403-vi.jpg

Fanned out the stuff. Was happy to see a final cut express CD. I was wondering with the 'preloaded' comments if it'd be a recovery CD or the actuall CD. I also was quite happy to see 'real' batteries (Energizer 2) vs. the typical free batteries being some obscure brand you never heard of

CRW_6404-vi.jpg

Then I got the foam out and here's the 'in the box' shot.

CRW_6405-vi.jpg

And then here it is on my desk getting ready to transfer stuff. Note I was browsing this very thread obsessing that it was on a truck somewhere here in the area at the very moment.

CRW_6406-vi.jpg

The first power up, no smoke. hooray.

CRW_6407-vi.jpg

Transferring files, as I headed out the door. No flash this time so you could read the screen.

CRW_6411-vi.jpg

So far, very quiet. Right now I'm playing iTunes, uploading photos to Fotki, and other stuff. I converted some Apple Lossless files to AAC but had to go downstairs. The Powerbook Gen A in the room is louder than this thing.

Not enough to make me want to move to the east :) Guess they have to get some perks.
