My prediction is that just after the Back to School promotion ends, there will be an update to the iMac line, followed by an iPod Touch update.

It would be great if they would release the new iMacs before this time, so I could get a free iPod Touch, but I doubt that'll happen.

Thoughts on that? That would mean that inventories would have to last through 9/7

Arggh i knew this would happen! I've just had to order 16 base model iMacs for our college, and i knew the iMac was well overdue an update. I waited til the last possible minute to order them, but i had to submit the order last week. They've even been delayed. So by the time i get them down they will be the outdated model. Just great....

I hate Apple sometimes..... This happened the last time we bought Macs, it's almost as if they know that schools/colleges will be buying Macs in bulk at the same time, so use the opportunity to empty their warehouses of their old ones, then release the new model when the schools come back for the new term, knowing full well that schools/colleges will have had to buy their computers well before the start of the term to have time to set them up.

What is this "iMac" you speak of? I'm appalled that this has nothing to do with the iPhone, I thought this site had standards.

QFT!

On a serious note Im hoping this is a good update. My 2007 macbook is slowly but surely starting to show its age.

Would be nice to see a new case design :)

It was just redesigned to have edge-to-edge glass and an aluminum back, it's mostly a piece of glass with an aluminum back, exactly Apple's current design style, it is as minimalistic as can be, and it looks great, what more design do you want?

I wish they would make it easier to modify: hard drives easily taken out and put it/exchanged. Also, 2 drives would be nice. iMacs are finally getting powerful enough for graphics work that they could displace the MacPro (where I'm concerned). The lack of internal drive space and inability to exchange drives keeps me away from them, so far. Plus, main drives die quick.

How they change the form factor in any major way, I can't see. Thinner?--who cares? Less "chin"?--big whoop. Different base?--who gives an f'? Shell color/material?--so what?

Higher res screens would be welcome.

AppleInsider reports that Apple has begun advising third-party retail partners of impending shortages of the company's iMac models, suggesting that a refresh of the company's popular all-in-one desktop line may be in store for the near future.Just last week, Hardmac reported that the Mac Pro would see an "end of summer" update, with iMac updates not following until several weeks after that. The site also claimed that the iMac may gain USB 3.0 and faster FireWire connectivity as part of the refresh.

The iMac was last updated in October, when it saw a major redesign to shift to 21.5-inch and 27-inch LED displays.

Further proof that MacSlows (errrr I mean MacPros) are gonna be terminated very soon.

I really really hope they come out with the new iMac real soon. I can't wait. Yellow tint or not.... I'm buying it!!!!

I seriously can't wait much longer.

The analyst report aside, any chance that the iMac gets refreshed BEFORE the MacPro?

An update means proof? Sketchy.
MacPros will always be around, but they could get even more expensive and more for a very-very-niche market. How much power does a person need for work, aside from CGI? Another 5 years and the MacPro will be tech-squeezed into being just a fancy storage machine and ultra-pro device... not a big money maker.

My first post... been doing a little lurking... sorry, but this is probably a question you have heard many times:

I've always been a PC guy, but I am in need of a new computer.
I am a visual artist and will soon be experimenting with video production.
I intend to use animated elements to the work as well.
I'll be using the Adobe software, and likely Final Cut as well (I have a brother in film willing to guide me through it).

So I am looking at getting 27" iMac... I don't want to shell out for a MacPro.

So, more than one question actually:
1. Is the current 27" Core 2 Duo good enough for the job with a graphics update?
2. Is the Quad Core that much better that I should go with it instead?
3. With the iMac refresh coming up, is it wise to wait for that?
4. Will prices be much more after the refresh than the current iMac cost?

I've been considering replacing my 2006 Mac Pro with either a new Mac Pro or a 27" iMac with an i5/i7 chip. I'd certainly welcome Blu-Ray but I'm not holding my breath.

The delays in both the MacPro and the iMac (my prediction) are form factor changes.

You know how famous Apple is on stickling for design of products - it's not necessarily the insides, but the cases for the new products (my prediction).

Do you think that they will widen or deepen the depth so that the components are not so crunched up inside creating more heat and possibly having some affect on the yellow tint issue?

Welcome!
I'm sure it will work for you, however, wait as long as you can for the refresh. If you don't "need" it now, wait. If you need it, then go for it.

Would be nice to see a new case design :)

Skip the kiddy stuff, keep the design, and add USB3.0, eSaTA, and an express card 34 slot so I would actually buy one for some medium lifting video work.

Pair it with a new Mac Pro, iWork, iLife, and Final Cut Studio 4 (with many features taken from Adobe Premier and Avid MC) and Apple would be a winner.

I highly doubt there will be any case changes, as the last release was a case change after 2+ years, and it'll probably be 1.5-2 years before you see any changes there.

I sort of doubt we'd see an i5, and it'll probably be a fast i3. If it's an i3, does it have to be the just the Intel IGP, or can they still put a 320 or 330m on it?

I agree about the case changes. The current design giving room for actual desktop chips is enough for most. I also agree with i5 and i7 only being in the 27" model. There's a possibility it'll be CTO in the 21.5" but i wouldn't hold my breath.

Let me know if you do, i am in the market for any Intel based Mac upgradeable tower that can accept PCI cards.

Welcome Flatz!

First a quick tip: if you post your question in the dedicated iMac or Buying Advice forum, it'll likely get some more attention, and you won't have to sift through the rest of the posts regarding the rumor.

As to your questions: a Core 2 Duo will work... but a quad-core i5/i7 will make your video encodes go much faster, etc. Since we're apparently getting so close to a refresh, it's highly advisable to wait it out a bit longer (I'm holding out myself with a 4.5-year old iMac!:)). As for prices, I'd imagine they'll be roughly the same. If they do end up being more expensive, there will likely be a steady supply of refurbished (and discounted) previous-gen iMacs at the online Apple Store for many months to come.

Core 2 is dead to me in 2010.

It's already two years into the Nehalem age with Sandy Bridge coming soon.

I think they should try to do everything they can to get a CNET Editor's choice...fast processor, blu-ray, lower price point for those features and figure out a way to bring the 326 ppi retina display to it.

The display alone would jack the price up, and honestly, a 27" higher than 30" resolution display is just fine.

Also, it would be the display manufacturer that would need to develop the Retina tech in the display, not Apple.

Will the new iMac come with instructions on how to hold it?

Seriously...I hope this refresh doesn't come with the problems that the last iMac and more recent iPhone have had. Surely with just a bump in speed the new iMac will have the "Screengate" behind them.

I am dying for a new 27" iMac with the latest processor to replace my trusty but old Gateway PC.

Yes, "Apple is a mobile company." This is a fact. They will be killing MacSlows either by neglect or on purpose. Probably the former, as we are witnessing.

Remove superdrive and make it external; use space for second hard drive and express 34.
