Why is the back of this prototype so scratched up? I would think prototypes would be handled fairly carefully and this thing seems to have as many scratches as my 2 year old model. I'm not convinced this is legitimate.

Did you read it? It said:

"-BTW, these phones NEVER leave Apple and this one left but it was a durability test phone, so that’s why the screen is all gridded off and cracked."

Why would Apple put a camera in the iPod?
I can understand why we have cameras in the iPhone, but why would someone want one in an iPod?
Aren't most iPod Touch buyers children, anyway? Do parents want their children to be walking around with candid cameras? I don't think so. Keep the camera on the iPhone, for adults.

are we looking at pictures of something that caused that chinese guy to kill himself?

yeah, no kidding dude. I remember that news story of the guy who killed himself because he lost the prototype.

possibly

this was for durability testing and Apple does all testing at Cupertino or the surrounding areas

and the guy just said he lost it this looks like it's gone through testing so I guess it's not it

but again the truth of the origin of something may never be revealed

If they can't provide a back that doesn't scratch after all these years, they can keep it.
It really is daft. There are plenty of walkman models and electric razors and any number of devices with metal backs that don't scratch like this on the merest touch.
Can anyone imagine buying a home stereo system that was made like this and scratched so easily when wiped? Yet the Apple device is meant for mobile use and should be even MORE scratch resistant than something sitting at home.
It's extraordinary that Apple has done nothing about this. The playing surface of a CD or DVD is more durable that this hardware.

for those of us who have no camera phone and don't want to carry around to many electronics

I carry my iPod touch with me everyday and I don't have a camera phone, I'd love to be able to have a camera with me without carrying an extra $200 camera and taking on the responsibility for an extra device. I don't care if the pictures are crap quality it's still cool

that's why you can buy a case and put it on as soon as you buy it. my friend was worried about that so he got a case for his 2G when he got it back in Feb. it's still shiny to this day

I don't really care, a scratched back doesn't affect the operations of my iPod and I don't care for resale value as I keep all my old iPods

Because everyone has the money to sign up for a smartphone service.

Except I've had an iPhone since launch day 2007 and never had service.

I don't much care for the iPhone as it's bulky and useless as a standalone device without service. that's why it was named iPhone so you can actually use it as a phone

but I like how Apple is beginning to port over all the iPhone features to the touch. they started with the volume controls and the speaker and they've moved on with enabling bluetooth. and we shall move even more forward with a camera. too bad the mic isn't in the bottom tho. I really wanna start playing Ocarina

the nail in the coffin for that theory then

I'm not 100% sure either but can these people just admit this is real? why must everyone here keep coming up with reasons it's fake? "it's photoshopped" "they drilled a hole in the back" "why would they keep the same design" "it's chinese" it's real just shut it and admit it

Ahhhhh the good old nail in the coffin theory.

lol, about "it's chinese":D

Fake or not I was expecting more!

It might be suitable as a low end Touch but I'm expecting more. For one thing GPS especially considering a camera on the unit.

I'm also expecting a lot faster processor. The problem is the internals look to much like past Touches to be considered a huge improvement. Maybe my expectations are to high but I was really hoping this time around we would get an entirely new Touch. A new design from the ground up, there have been enough changes in available hardware to justify it.

You can't see the 256 MB of RAM, and the faster CPU by looking at the mother board. You must use it to find out. :D:D

I don't think Apple wants to make too many design changes.
really you get a faster processor and better graphics chip along with a camera and mic. for me that's ok for now

maybe they'll add the compass, GPS, and OLED later. after all if they gave us all this now what would they do for the 4G?

Believe it or not, there are actually many ADULTS who do not want AT&T or cannot own an iPhone for other reasons, and get the touch instead.

Besides, who would buy a $200+ device for their child anyways?

I don't want GPS in my iTouch, if this thing has GPS then I'm staying away from it, how do I know people won't have access to knowing where I am (given I have a wifi connection)..

also I find it funny how just because engadget posts that its fake everyone starts following them. I'm not gonna say that from that pic it clearly was not a fake, but there was no good evidence it was a fake just because that camera was pixellated when zoomed in...the whole iPod was pixellated when zoomed in, not just the camera!

to make it less of a tricycle to the iphone :D

I don't care if there is a video or not; but that design with the centered camera and the last get plastic black patch in the left upper corner - just doesn't look right.

Shenanigans!

Wtf is this....The ipod touch will be more closer to the iPhone then ever. Only thing missing is the cell networks, data networks, and GPS. If it has a mic, what's the damn point in buying an iPhone...
I hope it does not have a camera tbh because it's will make them lose thier iPhone sales.....iPod touch with a 3.0 mpx camera, and mic + a regular/another smartphone phone = more then an iPhone...

I don't care so much about the scratches. I've dropped my iphone when stepping out of the car many times, it has hit hard ceramic floor, I've dropped it on asphalt roads and so on; and yes it has scratches, some dents and bits of plastic missing, but its not a big deal. The screen, though, is as new as one year ago - and that IS the big deal.
I don't think these ipods scratch so easily, and if the do get scratched, at least its just cosmetic, the functional bits are well taken care of.
