I called them just to see, because they aren't too far from me, and same as the other stores in the area, nothing.
I'm not surprised this crap goes on. I've seen 3 ebay listings already. One already sold for $2900 for the base model.
I'm not surprised that someone actually paid $700 more for the base model, instead of just patiently waiting it out a bit. Such a waste of money.

Spoke to a friend at my local Apple store and he said they received around 20 units and 2 displays. They unpacked them around 5pm and decided to wait till tomorrow to put them on display and sell them.....that last part pissed me off
Im assuming most stores will be carrying them by the end of this week. Good thing i didn't order online.
Honestly if they just opened stock and put it on the shelf it would piss me off worse. At least with them going on display and sale in the morning I have a level playing field where I can just go over and line up... having them just stock whenever it rolls in means I'm tied to either calling and hoping I catch them at the right time and then getting over there before others do... in a large metropolitan area, that last part is pretty difficult.
Calling and running around is what I've been doing so far, and I can see it getting old pretty quickly. I think I'll give a couple stores a shot at opening tomorrow and maybe Thursday, but after that I think I'll just order online and wait out the storm.
I agree too. I was calling my store all day. I called for the last time a min ago and they said they had a few come in but had sold them already...

Picked mine up today ($2199 model). Just transferred my MacBook Air over to it, took a little over a minute.

You make a good point. The thing is, my friend works there, he's a genius and i would have had him give me a call if they were going to sell today. I live <5 mins away. Was hoping to get this thing tonight. Sold my MBP on eBay last week, knowing a retina display was coming. So i've been without a notebook for a week!!!

You mind posting some pics of the screen. So far the only pics i've seen have been crap. Also, any comments on the fan noise and glare.
Should have been actual Palo Alto and not Stanford's store.
I should add, this was right after opening, so 10 AM.
Glare is better than other MacBooks I've had (and better than my 27" iMac) but still not like a matte screen.
Keyboard is really nice, much better than my air.
So far I have not heard the fan, but I'll update when I do.
Can't do a great pic, only have my iPhone with me, not my camera. iPhone pic won't do this justice. All I can say is the fonts are amazing, very crisp.
Even non-retina apps look great.
I'm not understanding all of this "Were going to have them on display today but you can't buy them." WHAT?! WHY?! Shouldn't you sell those instead of just showing them off?!?!
Saw one in store today (VA, Clarendon)! They didn't have it in stock, but I had a good 10-15 minutes playing with the one on display (base model). Amazing machine, and the screen is same as my Iphone but big! I even restarted it to see how fast it turns on. Wow!!! What a speed! It was like maybe 7-8 seconds and screen came on, once the screen was on everything looked ready to go, no "thinking" time while starting after seeing the screen. I started safari and it opened Apple site right away, very very fast. I had a thoughts to buy or not to buy, but after seeing this in person I'm ordering one with 16GB. Once you will see this retina, you won't want to go back!!!!
I think I'm going to try going to the Upper West Side Apple Store tomorrow morning before opening to try my luck. If you get any updates on availability at the Fifth Avenue store, let us know!

I was hoping to pick one up in Fair Oaks as they told me they'd have them today but when I called they were obviously not in stock. Hope you have better luck then I did tomorrow! I know the man said that the phones don't work until 10 for that store... Or maybe he lied lol
