Why won't amazon have at least a 3-4 week wait? Outside the box, Best Buy is you best bet seemingtly, but Amazon won't get stock earlier than Apple online.. right?

Amazon still has two of the base models with 512GB SSD in stock lol ....

As we can see in this thread, the demand is strong

I don't even know if the demand is super ridiculously strong, it's just that Apple Stores are getting such limited stocks... the Phoenix metropolitan area features 5 Apple stores, even if every store got say, 20 of these (which seems like a high estimate based on this thread) that's still only 100 for an area with a population of 4,000,000+...

Although, as somebody who tried to hunt down an Xbox 360 shortly after that launch, this is nothing... stores were selling out of stock within minutes of opening like 4 months after launch

Well the high end went from "pre-order" to "out of stock" from yesterday to today. Which means to me that they got SOME in stock and someone got a computer.

Apple has to splitting their supply - sending some to apple retailers, some to people who ordered online and some to 3rd party sellers (amazon, best buy etc), just sending to online customers makes no sense when they have obligations to their third party sellers.

Best buy is more than I'm willing to spend (I either want the education discount or no tax)

Amazon MAY have a 3-4 week wait, they may get enough tomorrow to fulfill my order - who knows - but I know I get one day shipping (faster than apple) and can easily cancel my order as long as it hasn't shipped yet. If it really is a long wait then I'll get one in store sooner and cancel the order. I refuse to believe that the apple in-store shortages will last an entire month - eventually all the people in a rush will have their computers and the demand will die down.

To be completely honest I don't believe this is a genuine shortage - there is no way a company that is usually so exact on their stock was this short for a release like this. I really believe this 'shortage' is a marketing ploy, the interest and free press it generates is well worth the very few people who get so frustrated they don't buy at all.

Totally agree :)

I reckon I'll also put in an amazon order, maybe over the weekend, when hopefully we'll have a better idea. Forgot about the immediate tax benefits of ordering through Amazon.

I got mine at 11 AM the day after it was announced, June 12th. I went to Garden State Plaza in New Jersey. I asked the first guy I saw if I can purchase it and he said they aren't getting them for a few days. I told him that the person I spoke with yesterday said they would definitely have them tomorrow (the 12th). He said unfortunately we didn't get them in. So I asked to speak with a manager, told her the situation. I told her to check if they had any unopened shipments and sure enough they did. I bought the first Retina MBP because I was persistent. Even the manager was misinformed. But be persistent, tell them to check the backroom to double check, ask them to check the tracking on the shipments. I can bet every Apple store had them at that time but were just poorly misinformed because it was a sloppy launch.

I had called Best Buy this morning and they actually had some in stock, but very unfortunately I'm unable to actually purchase until Friday.

I saw what some people have been posting about their experiences at Best Buy, so I went there and asked a sales worker at the computer section about reserving a RMBP, and she said she hadn't actually heard about reserving it. She rang her manager over, and they spent about 15 minutes on the store computer trying to figure it out. Then, they found out about it and they took down all my information and told me that I'm actually the very first person on the list, but are unable to tell me when a shipment will come in.

They printed out my reservation receipt, and it says they'll notify me by phone and email when one comes in. Like what other people have been saying, I have 72 hours to pickup after they recieve it, so if (unlikely) they happen to get it Thursday morning, they should be able to hold one for me until Friday. I also asked them if they honor the education discount that Apple has, and she said they definitely do. :)

What?! You got one?! At garden state plaza??? I called them like four times throughout the day and they told me each time that they didn't get a shipment and they didn't know when. Those liars.

I'm going to have to go into my best buy and try this.

I have a Best Buy reservation as back up, but I'll be calling all over the DMV this morning and this afternoon. I think some of these forum members are correct: just be persistent, it's the only way to beat the odds on this one. Hopefully, the Apple Stores all got massive shipments last night and we'll be good to go.

Just walked over to International Plaza (they open the mall at 830 for the mall walkers). They had employees there (they also have classes going on) and I was able to talk to one. As of 830, he said they didn't have any for sale, but employees were going through the shipments from late yesterday. Told me to try back later in the day.

He also confirmed what I was told yesterday, they have only had 2 RMBP for sale so far....

I just called the Ottawa store and she said they got some yesterday but they were all gone (I knew that...) and that she didn't expect any new stock for at least a week (I call BS on that one)

Brandon: Checked, don't have any, not getting any today.*
Tampa: he was saying no that asked if it was personal or business then finished saying no.*
Millennia: No. Check this afternoon.*
Florida Mall: yes.*

Just talked to Brandon......they don't have any and they said that they are only taking reservations for business. They said that they don't expect to have any for sale until late next week at the earliest for personal use.

C'mon Apple.....
