Base 256 or 512??

What are everyone's thoughts on the $500 for the extra 0.3GHZ and the 256GB of addition storage? Worth it? I have been waiting around for the 512GB but haven't had luck but can find the 256 fairly easy. Someone either talk me into a 256GB and if I need an external HD make me think it's ok OR inspire me to wait for the 512GB model......

I'm so freaking impatient!!!

I called all of the Apple Stores several times and didn't get anywhere with them. They were rude, arrogant, and most importantly had no information.

An Apple Store employee was arrogant?!?! HOW!?!? </sarcasm>

I feel you man. All those people who are full on kool aid and empty on actual product knowledge should definitely be more humble. I try to avoid the Apple Store whenever I can. I'd rather deal with the forced used car dealer sales pitch at Best Buy than the rude and arrogant hipsters at the Apple Store. Of course these are big generalization and not all employees are like this, but its not exactly an outlier either.

What are you uses? If you don't mind needing an external with you, then the lower should work. In most scenarios the extra processing power won't be much of a factor (again depending on usage).

Hi there!
Just joined to let anyone interested know that there is one base model RMBP left at the Mooresville, NC Best Buy as of 2pm today.
I called this morning and was told they had two but of course when I went in everyone said they had never gotten them in. I just happened to go over to where the MacBooks were kept (the cages on the back wall) and saw the two RMBPs on top of all of the Airs, so I was able to get one of them.

There wasn't anyone else around asking about one, so I hope this will help someone find one!

Also, they would not give me the education discount (even though I printed out a receipt from the other thread to show them), but I did get the $150 gift card.

I will be there next Wednesday on business and was going to pop into that BB and see if I could snag one....we shall see if they are still there :).

Well....It looks like I'll be taking a break from trying to find one. I thought I had one yesterday in the Sacramento Area where I was able to hold what I thought was a "retina" display Macbook Pro. It was priced exactly the same at 2199. I was even able to get the person to give me the student discount price. I get there and after purchasing the item, i take two steps and realize something. "why does it say Macbook pro on the screen". The retina's don't have the written. Then I look at the specs and see 768HDD. and the dread 1440 x 900 resolution. I turned around to tell her she picked the wrong one. There were no more left.

I'm exhausted. I don't myself calling the same stores I called yesterday hoping for another shipment. I don't know when Best Buy gets any, but is it realistic, they will be receiving more units today, tomorrow. I'm gonna enjoy my weekend and figure this out on monday or tuesday.

I use it for photo editing a lot. Mostly with Lightroom these days as it has enough features for me. Rarely photoshop but sometimes these models need some liquify applied. I do however make videos for my website using Adobe After Effects which is really resource intensive and to render those graphics takes an hour for a short 15 second video. Would be nice to cut that down to 15 minutes or less. I also frequently run parallels with Windows 7 for my day job but the current machine handles that with ease.

Right now I'm on a 17" MBP with an i5 2.53GHz duo core 8GB of RAM. Menu meters shows I rarely go under 2GB of RAM available even running Windows etc so I'm not worried about RAM at all. Just can't do video rendering, photoshop and Windows all at once without a bottleneck but I never need to so mostly worried about the 0.3GHz but also wouldn't want to cary a drive around but I have a NAS at home with about 6TB of space so I would just have to archive frequently.

Been in 2 Apple stores. One sales guy was cool and said to come back on Monday morning, they will probably have them. Went to another store, sales guy was a real turd. Asked him if they had any in stock, he started screaming (or maybe it was his loud voice) and said he doesn't know if they will have them next week or in a month, which frankly is utter BS.

This is how retail business works: Sales reps are notified by their managers at least a day in advance about deliveries because sales reps need to know what they have in stock and when they need to stay late to stock the shelves.

The average apple floor guy isn't told anything. I'm convinced that if they aren't in the overnight that does product changes that they aren't told anything on the days that new products come in prior to starting their shift.

This comes from both my experience last year buying a day1 MBA2011 (and the guy having to read the display to figure out WTH I was asking for) as well as this week watching the store people hanging around the Retina Macbook table (a customer was explaining the specs to the employee, another had to tell the employee that they didn't actually have any to sell)
Its entirely possible there IS someone at the store (in the back) who can see when things are due but they either don't, or aren't allowed to share that with the average employee.

Talked to an Apple Rep today. I was told that most stores are receiving retina display models on the 20th.. so that might be a good date to try!

I hope this is true! I want my rMBP before my vacation to LA next week. Although I'm sure I would be able to find one in california when I'm there if necessary! :roll eyes:

Edit: You mean June 20th, right?

LOL! That's what I was thinking. With the store pickup a couple days ago set at JULY 20th....makes you wonder.

Maybe Apple screwed up and meant to say June on the in store pickup option and thats why they took it away?

Yes! June 20th. :apple:

I feel like an online rep wouldn't give a date without being 100% sure!! Now I'm excited! :D
btw, that apple rep has some sloppy typing :p

Awww, guys I'm a valued customer!! Haha sorry, this has nothing to do with the conversation.

No worries!! We'll just assume your first rep has an inside word from Mr Cook that none of the other reps know.. I'm sure we'll all get our MacBooks within a week or two.

Don't worry. I have multiple tabs open and I'm Ctrl+Cing away like a madman.
All for science! :apple:

Yeah I noticed you were using a windows machine.. First mac purchase?

I have an 11 inch Macbook Air but I gave that to my mom. Saw the Retina Macbook and I couldn't resist :D. Power of Apple Marketing I guess? :apple:

EDIT: Another specialist that doesn't know the date :(
