Just out of curiosity, which DC area Best Buy did you go to that gave both the student discount plus $150 gift card? I tied my local BB in Germantown, MD and the manager told me that the most discount that store has ever given on an Apple product is $100. I even showed him a print out of the receipt that other people have posted as well as Apple's website showing both the discount as well as the App store gift card but he flat out ignored these "proofs" and discredited them as not genuine.

So anyone in the DC metro area know which BB is price matching as well as giving the $150 GC? Just FYI, I purchased the Mac from a Best Buy in Delaware with $200 student discount but no gift card. I just want a local BB to price match the gift card since other people have had success getting both.

Also any suggesstions on local BB stores with managers that are not complete ******s? I went to 3 BB in Delaware to look for this computer and all the managers that I spoke with were rude with very poor customer service skills.

I'd probably try any but the Germantown one. Try one of the ones in Rockville. Probably the closer to an Apple store, the better.

I went to the Best Buy in Fair Lakes, VA, out on 66. The argument is pretty simple. Hopefully they aren't dunces.

Best Buy offers price match. The education discount is $200 off at Apple; Best Buy matches it under the same circumstances. In addition, they have been given the go ahead from corporate to beat Apple's $100 gift card offer with a $150 BB gift card offer.

Hopefully they are not complete idiots.

Shoot. I was there on Friday and they didn't have any. The whole hunting for this makes the $ seem kinda worth it....or not.

Honestly I can see the June 20th thing being true. A week and a half after the announcement. And like I said earlier it could explain why apple took away the ship to store option, maybe it was a typo. We'll just see how it goes!

Where did this June 20th estimate come from? My instore was dated July 20th. Sorry if I missed something.

I had one of the 2.3ghz base models in my hands at Best Buy last night, but they would't let me have the student discount since I don't have my student ID yet. I'm all set up to start college this summer and even showed my UNLV home page that has ALL my student info, but they said they need the actual ID in order to give the $200 off. Anyone have a good idea how to get around it since I will have to wait until the fall to get the actual ID?

At the Apple Store, I showed them my acceptance letter and they gave it to me.

When I picked mine up from Best Buy they literally asked for my name and if I was a student. They didn't check any ID or even ask what college it was for. If they had I would have been able to prove it, but I was a little surprised at how trusting they were.

Do Apple stores ever receive shipments on Sundays? I'm trying to decide if it's worth going over there this morning to be there when they open. I called the store yesterday and the guy told me to try back today, but I suspect he had no information.

An apple support rep in chat. Most likely just a guess on his part. It was not confirmed by the next 5 reps people asked.

Well if you look at the post all the rep said is on the 20th. Never mentioned June or which month at all for that matter, since the ship to store date was for July 20th I'm sure that's they date the rep was referring to.

A couple people said they bought at Apple stores but I imagine people are most likely trying to buy at Apple which is why you might have better luck at Best Buy.

If FedEx only has flights from Memphis to Houston Tues through Sat, do you think they would be putting out stuff that got here Saturday tomorrow or would there be nothing until Tuesday?

A lot of people have gotten them from Apple stores. The biggest problem is that each store only gets a few per day if any, so they happen to sell out fairly quick. But like I've said all along, this isn't a 200 dollar phone or 500 dollar tablet. It's a 2200(min.) laptop that is not geared to general consumers but rather toward professionals, so I really don't think the demand is that high. I think the demand currently exceeds the stock, but I don't see that being a problem for too much longer.
When the initial orders went live on Monday, they were estimated to be SHIPPING in 5-7 not arriving. Now it seems a lot of those people's orders have shipped and are set to arrive Monday or Tuesday, so for me, that has always been a good time frame for when some decent stock will make it to the retail stores. I think it's safe to assume in that first wave of orders, they would also ship some allocated stock to retail stores.

How I got mine...

Hi guys I just wanted to share how I ended up getting my 2.3/256 MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

Wednesday, I called the Best Buy in Fullerton, CA. They said they had 5 on order and should be getting them 'within the next couple of days'. That afternoon I headed to the Brea Mall Apple Store to checkout the display, after about 15 minutes I knew I had to buy one, unfortunately they had none.

Thursday I did the same routine, called the Fullerton Best Buy, still 5 on order but this rep went a step further and said they hadn't gone in-transit yet so he had no idea when they would be arriving. I stopped by the Brea Mall Apple store again on the way home and the story was the same.

Friday I went through the same routine but this time the guy at Best Buy said the store in Tustin, CA had 2 available. I called and sat on hold for quite a while. The sales guy was extremely helpful, said he had fielded nearly 10 calls that morning (it was around noon when I called) and that one of the two was spoken for already and the second was no where to be found.

At this point I had pretty much given up on getting one. I figured I'd give the Apple store in Brea one last shot Saturday morning.

Saturday I called the Brea Mall Apple Store shortly after they opened. Talked to possibly the rudest Apple employee I have ever encountered. She seemed really annoyed by my question (granted it's a question she had probably been answering for several days). The conversation went something like this: Me, "Hi I was wondering if you have received any stock of the new Retina Display MacBook Pros." there was a pause and then she responded, "No, no we do not have them in stock, we have no idea when we will get them, and we don't know how many we will get. Your best bet is to order online." It wasn't so much what she said but how she said it, she seemed so exacerbated that I ask the question. Anyway I gave up hope. I'm traveling for business on the east coast next week and figured I'd get one when I returned.

Fast forward to about 2PM, I'm waiting to meet up with some friends and happened to be near Savi Ranch. I had about an hour to kill so I decided to stop in the Anaheim Hills Best Buy. In all honesty I was more there to checkout the Samsung Series 7 Chronos than anything. I figured there was no chance that they would have the RMBP. Anyway I get talking to a sales guy, they only had the 15" Samsung on display with the Sandy Bridge processors. I mention was had been looking to see one of the Ivy Bridge units in person. He tells me the only notebooks they have with IB are the new MacBooks.I sort of jokingly said, not the retina display models though, right? He's like, no, we have those.

He turns and asks another guy who says, no, we don't. They involve a third and forth person. All huddle around a computer and say, nope, none in stock. the first guy (really the reason I ended up getting one) was insistent... he walked over to the area under the cages that held all there apple product and pointed to two boxes in plastic that looked thinner than the other ones and said, which are those? The others kind of blew off the question and said, probably the new standard screen units. He persisted and wheeled over the stairs, climbed up and got both down, and yep, retina displays. The guy in the geek squad shirt said, those might be pre orders let me check.

I wait about 5 minutes... he says, ya, sorry we have these two in store and a high spec model, but all are reserved for other customers. I give up, walk back over to the display model and decide it's just not meant to be.

A couple minutes later the guy that told me about the pre-orders comes up to me and says, if I want one of the low spec models it's mine. While we were going through the transaction (being helped by another employee at this time) he comes up and says, the high spec is now available. I guess he had been calling pre order people and a couple canceled or so he said. I opted for the low spec as I don't need all that much disk space and I don;t think for my usage the processor bump would be worth it.

I never thought I would say it but the best buy store(s) were extremely helpful in this process, far more so than the Apple Store. I understand that the inventory situation is what it is but at the BB stores the employees actually seemed to try to help.

An interesting note from one of the BB employees. She said that BB is receiving the units via drop shipments from Apple which is not the standard mode of delivery; as such shipments are not going 'in transit' in their system. Basically they just show up when FedEx delivers them. It's nearly impossible for them to predict when they will arrive, and I'm assuming the receipt into inventory process is different creating even more delays/confusion.

Moral of the story stay diligent!

Maybe the woman working at the Apple store doesn't get paid enough to buy one herself and she's upset that legions of rich people are shouting at her all day that they want to throw their money at her for a new Retina.

What did Tim Cook get paid last year, $371 million?

The profit on the $2,199 model? About $900.00

Based on my experience, I must agree that my Apple Store is being outdone by Best Buy. I was able to call at 10 when my local best buy opened, have them hold the retina for me until I got there, (2 hour drive), and was able to purchase it with the education pricing and even got some reward points.

Sorry if this has been asked across the 61 pages-but does best buy carry the maxed out model of the MBPR or any model with 16gb of ram? Thanks!

Hey guys! I'm in a similar boat like everyone else. Monday I tried to place my order, but it wasn't applying the student discount. I decided to go to the Apple store instead to buy one since they were "Available Today". When I got there, the employees had no clue what was going on really. By the time I got home, the dreaded 3-4 weeks came up.

Since then, I have been calling daily, and passing by, 2 Apple stores and 2 best buys with no luck.

The best buys got 0 stock and have to pre-order them. They said they expect shipments in 3-4 weeks.

Apple store has no idea. Everytime I pass by or call they tell me none are in stock. I had a nice lady that went in the back to double check, but most of the time the guys just answer NO before I even finish my sentence. Very rude : (

I hope I can find one soon as I want to replace my 2008 macbook

For those still without, does anyone have a game plan for obtaining them this upcoming week? With most online orders not expected to be delivered until mid-July it seems overly optimistic that the stores will receive more stock this week, doesn't it?
