How I got mine...
Hi guys I just wanted to share how I ended up getting my 2.3/256 MacBook Pro with Retina Display.
Wednesday, I called the Best Buy in Fullerton, CA. They said they had 5 on order and should be getting them 'within the next couple of days'. That afternoon I headed to the Brea Mall Apple Store to checkout the display, after about 15 minutes I knew I had to buy one, unfortunately they had none.
Thursday I did the same routine, called the Fullerton Best Buy, still 5 on order but this rep went a step further and said they hadn't gone in-transit yet so he had no idea when they would be arriving. I stopped by the Brea Mall Apple store again on the way home and the story was the same.
Friday I went through the same routine but this time the guy at Best Buy said the store in Tustin, CA had 2 available. I called and sat on hold for quite a while. The sales guy was extremely helpful, said he had fielded nearly 10 calls that morning (it was around noon when I called) and that one of the two was spoken for already and the second was no where to be found.
At this point I had pretty much given up on getting one. I figured I'd give the Apple store in Brea one last shot Saturday morning.
Saturday I called the Brea Mall Apple Store shortly after they opened. Talked to possibly the rudest Apple employee I have ever encountered. She seemed really annoyed by my question (granted it's a question she had probably been answering for several days). The conversation went something like this: Me, "Hi I was wondering if you have received any stock of the new Retina Display MacBook Pros." there was a pause and then she responded, "No, no we do not have them in stock, we have no idea when we will get them, and we don't know how many we will get. Your best bet is to order online." It wasn't so much what she said but how she said it, she seemed so exacerbated that I ask the question. Anyway I gave up hope. I'm traveling for business on the east coast next week and figured I'd get one when I returned.
Fast forward to about 2PM, I'm waiting to meet up with some friends and happened to be near Savi Ranch. I had about an hour to kill so I decided to stop in the Anaheim Hills Best Buy. In all honesty I was more there to checkout the Samsung Series 7 Chronos than anything. I figured there was no chance that they would have the RMBP. Anyway I get talking to a sales guy, they only had the 15" Samsung on display with the Sandy Bridge processors. I mention was had been looking to see one of the Ivy Bridge units in person. He tells me the only notebooks they have with IB are the new MacBooks.I sort of jokingly said, not the retina display models though, right? He's like, no, we have those.
He turns and asks another guy who says, no, we don't. They involve a third and forth person. All huddle around a computer and say, nope, none in stock. the first guy (really the reason I ended up getting one) was insistent... he walked over to the area under the cages that held all there apple product and pointed to two boxes in plastic that looked thinner than the other ones and said, which are those? The others kind of blew off the question and said, probably the new standard screen units. He persisted and wheeled over the stairs, climbed up and got both down, and yep, retina displays. The guy in the geek squad shirt said, those might be pre orders let me check.
I wait about 5 minutes... he says, ya, sorry we have these two in store and a high spec model, but all are reserved for other customers. I give up, walk back over to the display model and decide it's just not meant to be.
A couple minutes later the guy that told me about the pre-orders comes up to me and says, if I want one of the low spec models it's mine. While we were going through the transaction (being helped by another employee at this time) he comes up and says, the high spec is now available. I guess he had been calling pre order people and a couple canceled or so he said. I opted for the low spec as I don't need all that much disk space and I don;t think for my usage the processor bump would be worth it.
I never thought I would say it but the best buy store(s) were extremely helpful in this process, far more so than the Apple Store. I understand that the inventory situation is what it is but at the BB stores the employees actually seemed to try to help.
An interesting note from one of the BB employees. She said that BB is receiving the units via drop shipments from Apple which is not the standard mode of delivery; as such shipments are not going 'in transit' in their system. Basically they just show up when FedEx delivers them. It's nearly impossible for them to predict when they will arrive, and I'm assuming the receipt into inventory process is different creating even more delays/confusion.
Moral of the story stay diligent!
