For those still without, does anyone have a game plan for obtaining them this upcoming week? With most online orders not expected to be delivered until mid-July it seems overly optimistic that the stores will receive more stock this week, doesn't it?
Actually I think most online orders are expected to be delivered starting tomorrow. The bulk of the orders were done when the shipping date was 5-7 days, so those will be delivered this week. Then the shipping status changed to 2-3 weeks, which would imply next week(the 25th) and the first week of July. So I would think that stores will continue to get shipments this week and the weeks to follow, even if they are only getting a few units per shipment. Also I don't think the status of online orders really effect the stores stock, they probably allocate a certain amount of stock to the stores. In the past with iPhone and iPad releases finding stock in stores, even when the online store showed an estimated ship date of 3-4 weeks. Actually I remember when the iPhone 4 came out the online site said 3-4 weeks, I got one after only a few days of phone calls. So there is really no way of knowing.

I decided to stick to BestBuy when I got mine. They offer 18 mo financing unlike Apple. I just called every morning right after they opened and just gave the SKU and asked them to check their system. Ended up showing one in stock on Thursday and I asked them to hold it at customer service desk until I get there. Got student discount ($200) + $150 gift card ($50 more than apple deal).

Apple Store is a crapshoot and calling them is useless. They are definitely withholding information and some posts here have stated that they are reserving them for business customers.

This is a good tip, the first time I called Best Buy I asked for the product by name... this caused a little confusion and the associate had to look through a list of SKUs. By calling with the SKU you are looking for it eliminates any ambiguity.

It's funny that you mention the business side. The second trip to the Apple store I was approached by a 'black shirt', I think those are the business folks, at least they used to be. Anyway I asked if they had the Retina display versions in stock and his first question was, would this be for your business? I said, no, personal, to which he replied, oh, no we are sold out. I didn't think to ask what his answer would have been had I said, yes, it is. Just strange to answer a question with a question.

I already know I want to see one in store first, and double check how much of the 8 GB of RAM I use with normal usage.

I'm tempted to ask someone if they have any in stock, and if they say no then I'll say do you actually not have any or are you lying and saving it for business customers? :)

I was finally able to pick one up at the macmall in Torrance, CA. It was about an hour drive, but so worth it. Besides, I picked up some shoes from the new balance down the street.

Anyone have any luck at the Apple Store in the Eaton Center (Toronto) Have they ever had any available?

Mike

Time to retire from this thread just picked one up at the apple store in Salem New Hampshire. They had a few left if your in the area.

Just called. Got the "unfortunately no we do not" and "we don't know until they arrive". Did you buy for "business" or home use?

Now that the majority of the Best Buys and Apple stores have sold out of their initial inventory let's keep hearing those success stories so those unfortunate people who haven't landed one for themselves (myself included) know if they are getting new deliveries.

Please report on your purchase before abandoning the thread!! I will do the same if I get lucky. I'm looking for TWO of them. Hopping for Best Buy at this point for the educational discount, larger gift card and another $100 or so in gift cards with my rewards points between the two laptops.

<fingers crossed for today>

Heads up that B&H is taking preorders on the Base + 16GB model.

I talked to a rep and he said it expects to be shipped within 1-2 weeks. Wanted to let folks know...after I got my preorder in of course ;)

is that the rockingham mall one? u guys try calling the pheasant lane mall apple store?
Rockingham Mall. It's the biggest mall in NH so I figured they might have inventory before Pheasant lane. Also closer.

Home use. While it's possible they sold out. I'm going to go ahead and say not to trust what they say over the phone, unless you ask for them to check the stock while your on the phone.
Here's what happened to me, as I think it will help.
I went to the store on a hunch, I've been calling both NH stores and about 7 or 8 Boston area stores for the past week, and kept getting the same result, none in stock keep calling. But i've also heard reports that they are getting small shipments everyday. So I took a chance and went in.
When I walked in I was greeted and asked if I needed help I said I wanted to check out the new Retina Macbook pros and then said you don't happen to have any do you? The woman was incredibly pleasant and said, I'm sorry we don't right now, but we may get some with our shipment which has not arrived yet. I said I would hang around a little while to see, and went over to play with the computers.
A few minutes later another guy came out of the back and just started chatting casually with the woman who greeted me. Another customer came in and said he was just here to look around, to which the guy who came from the back said "Make sure you check out the new Retina Macbook pros" then jokingly added, "or don't because once you look at it your going to want one" and then the girl who greeted me said "yeah, and unfortunately we don't have any right now" again in joking fashion. Then I heard the guy say, "actually we have four of them out back". The woman who greeted me asked a few questions before coming right over to me and letting me know. Before setting me up with a purchase.
Now when I was buying it the guy did mention that I was one of the lucky few and that they have not sold many.
My point is, even though the woman was incredibly nice and incredibly helpful, these things come and go so quick that it's possible the person on the phone never knew they came in and never will know. Also if I had called and they told me they had them, they would have been gone by the time I got there anyway.

Anyway hope this will be helpful to some, any questions feel free to ask here or PM me, as I will still try to help out any way possible.

Does anyone know if the Apple Store is going to carry some sort of "Ultimate" version of the RMBP like they have in the past for the MacBook Air? Or are they just carrying the 2 base configurations?

From the looks of the display on the iPad product description in store they will have the two base models and the $3700 "loaded" model.

Good news! The apple store put me in line at least. I called this morning, and I explained how I have been looking every single day. She told me that if I was a buisness, they could put me in line and call me as soon as they get the model I want.

So, I said I was self employed student. I have an App in the App Store(its called Don't Fail), and I also said I am a google adsense member as I do video editing for gameplay videos on youtube. My current macbook is dead so I need it so I can continue my stuff : ).

She said it was good enough for her and she put me in line. Now I don't have to call everyday to bother them!

I have one ready for in store pick up with BestBuy Canada. I'm trying to talk to their support about matching Apple's student discount.... if they can't I'll cancel my order :(

Let us know how you make out. I am dying to know if Best Buy or Future Shop in Canada will match both the education discount and give a gift card. Would rather get a card through them (to purchase the superdrive) instead of an apple card.

Couldn't read all 40 pages since I just found this thread.

I'm traveling to USA by the end of July, early August for a very short period of time, I know it's impossible to predict how the availability of the RMBP would be. But from all your experiences, do you think I'll be able to walk in at an Apple Store and buy the base model?

I can't order online since I'm only there for a week or two and I can't risk the possibility that the shipment might not get on time.

I found this post on their forum: plug-in.bestbuy.ca/t5/Computers/Student-Discount-for-MacBook-Pro/td-p/42090

But calling in store was useless :/

If anyone is in the upstate NY area, Albany store has base models in stock! I was just there to pick up a sleeve case for mine.

Definitely, they will have way more than enough in stock by then. I would suspect that within the next 2 weeks most Apple Stores and retailers will have them in stock.

Apple HAS to be making their employees withhold information from us on when these will arrive. You can't tell me they don't know when or how many they are getting. A company this technologically advanced doesn't know when their orders will show up? Bull$h!t!

Folks that are getting on the wait list at Apple stores:

I have heard people mention that they will call you when the model you have chosen arrives in store. Are the models you are choosing BTO types of machines? Or are you just specifying one of the three prebuilt models that Apple are showing in store?
