Before heading to BestBuy I decided to see if FutureShop would match the student discount but my local store flat out denied a pricematch :(

i had to fight for it. the guy was ready to give me a huge discount on their extended warranty (around 200 bucks), but wasnt ready to discount the price of the latptop. after a lot of convincing he finally came around.

Damn, I ordered my through the retail store (Apple Business) after they told me I would get it shipped Monday (today) and arrive Tuesday. But as of right now, my order is still processing. It makes me wonder if I really want to wait for 16GB or just get the "base" model. I don't really want to wait 3-4 weeks just to get one, because I want 16GB.

When did you place your order?

Couldn't read all 40 pages since I just found this thread.

I'm traveling to USA by the end of July, early August for a very short period of time, I know it's impossible to predict how the availability of the RMBP would be. But from all your experiences, do you think I'll be able to walk in at an Apple Store and buy the base model?

I can't order online since I'm only there for a week or two and I can't risk the possibility that the shipment might not get on time.

I don't think you will have any trouble in the late July/Aug time frame. Store should be well stocked by then. This not going to go on as long as the iPhone, or iPad, IMO.

Still trying to find one around Sacramento with no luck. It sounds like most of the people around here have been pretty lucky with Best Buy.

Stopped by 2 apple stores today. Finally just giving up and ordered online. Ugh. Hope it gets shipped soon!

I'm the dude that posted specialist chat logs yesterday. I know many of you have said specialists are people on the computer at home blah blah but I ran into another specialist that said the 20th of June. It may or may not be accurate but it wouldn't hurt to check out an Apple Store on the 20th :p

This confuses me.

They will start receiving shipments on the 20th?

Retinas? Called earlier and they said they had none.

yes retinas. I saw 4 people walk out with them and could have bought one myself. Just so you know...the mall of georgia employees are the same ones i called and asked if they had any new airs on saturday and they said no. I walked across the street and they had all of them in stock.

Well I give up on the Apple store in the case of trying to buy this damn laptop. I stopped at the Apple store in Town Square here in Las Vegas this afternoon. The first girl I talked to said they get some in every day and sell out right away. The 2nd girl said they won't have any for 3-4 weeks because they are on backorder. I'm just going to order online and sit and wait. Just sucks because I really do need this for classes starting in 2 weeks here.

Just picked mine up at Best Buy. I was the first one to purchase at the store because I bought the unopened display model. It was all a smooth transaction, the guy was nice and so was the manager, even though he had to come up after we questioned the student discount on the computer.

They tried to say it was just $100 off the computer. I said it was $200 off with $100 gift card, had to pull up the apple website and show them the shopping cart with the student discount applied. He said that was fair enough and took $200 off didn't really ask about the gift card, said screw it. The thing is, I preorder the machine at the store earlier that day and then an hour later they say its ready. I got there and it wasn't, they said it must have been an error or something. So they just sold me their unopened computer. This thing is great.

Expect at least a small debate with the employee and or manager about the discount, I don't know why they won't price match exactly unless we pull up a web page from apple to confirm it ourselves.

Everyone PLEASE READ THIS:

Nobody can find them because Apple is currently hogging them for business owners because they get a higher profit.

I got mine today, but not without a huge argument and fighting.

I called this morning to see if they had any, she said no, and was very kind. I explained how I have been looking for one everyday as my old macbook is dying. She then asked if I used it for "business purposes". I said sure, since I have developed an iPhone app and do video editing as a youtube partner. She then added me to a "special list" and would personally call me when it came in stock.

Lo and behold, about 3 hours later I got a phone call from Apple saying my rMBP was ready to pick up.

When I got there, the lady did not want to give me student discount. She said I was buying it as a business account(which I didn't even know I was, all she had asked me about originally was why I used it, she never told me anything about being a business consumer and no student discount would apply or any thing ).

When I told her I wasn't going to buy it without the student discount, she told me it was ok because there was plenty of people in line that would be willing to pay full price for it.

She then went on to say they are holding all retina macbook pros from consumers(aka public) until their business users all get one as they get a higher profit margin. I told her that was VERY unethical. Everyone is entitled to the new macbook, not just business owners. It should be first come first serve!

She also said she didn't estimate consumers to be able to get their hand on one until a few weeks. I argued that when Apple said "Available Today", it didn't say "Available only to business costumers".

After arguing she finally gave in and gave me my student discount, and told me it was very nice of her because they aren't suppose to be doing that.

So, right now Apple(or my store at least) wants to just make the biggest profit as possible by selling it to business users who get a smaller discount.

If you want a retina macbook pro, you are going to have to get on their " business list" because that is what they are doing. As soon as they get one in stock, they give it to whoever is next on the list. Why this list isn't for both consumers and business users baffles me. They are getting a sale no matter what.

If you call Apple and they say they don't know, truth is they are getting a few a day(1-3ish) and it goes directly who is on their list.

you just had bad luck...sure, they may call business owners on a list, but everything i have seen is on a first come first serve

They are definitely holding it for business customers. From the numerous posts I have read it looks like they are trying to develop new business accounts and keep a good relation by providing them with products first.

I was treated on the phone very differently when i changed my answer from personal to business. I settled for Best Buy.

That is correct, Business customers come first PERIOD. They would hold a certain number from the new shipments, then whatever is left is for the public. You just have to be there at the RIGHT time.

That's just the way it is. Life isn't fair. You gotta hustle.

Has anyone shopped at the Apple stores at either Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga, CA..or the one at the Glendale Galleria in Glendale, CA? These 2 locations are the ones closest to me. I haven't called them or anything yet, but I am planning to buy my very first macbook pro in July after Mountain Lion is released (with student discount). Does anyone know if these 2 locations have any macbook pros in stock? I'm planning on getting the higher end 13" inch macbook. I am just hoping to walk in the Apple store in July, purchase the higher end 13" macbook pro and walk out a happy customer but I'm reading posts that they are reserved for business first so now I'm not sure if I should just order it online from the website? Please advise.. thanks :)

Thanks to DArsenault's report, I was able to snag one earlier today from the Apple Store in Salem, NH. I'm typing this post on it. :)

After reading the post, I called the AS and identified myself as a business customer. They let me know I could have the basic config right away, or they'd order me a machine to my spec. They couldn't tell me how long the order to spec would take but they indicated it would be in the range of a few days to a week. I'd be on a short list to receive the machine.

Seeking immediate gratification, I chose to go ahead with the basic config. They took my CC info over the phone and charged it, gave me the usual business discount, and told me I could come pick it up anytime.

As much as I wanted a tricked out machine, I figure I saved a bundle by getting the low model. I mostly wanted the amazing unbelievably beautiful (!) screen and the processor is super fast even at 2.3. I would have liked a larger SSD for sure but I also have an 11-inch Air for travel and I tend to store a lot on a wirelessly accessible external drive now. Absolutely loving this laptop.

I don't know how many they had in Salem but I saw another guy buying one and he was not being helped by a business rep.

A comment about the profit margin re: biz. I think it's more of a customer satisfaction issue. Most larger businesses actually get a discount from Apple. I've worked for a couple companies now that participate in the discount program. I think they may be giving first dibs to business customers because we tend to buy a lot of equipment. Having inventory for us keeps us buying from them. So long term more profit from our consistent sales but any given sale is usually at a discount.

In Canada , Futureshop and Bestbuy are getting them today and tomorrow you can check online or call. Picked one up at a FS store today, it was showing online and they held it for me. They are only getting 1-2 per store. good luck.

Nice display but the machine is bigger than I hoped.
