Cross post from the other thread (still need the questions answered! :D)

I called 3 Apple stores in my area (Phoenix - Biltmore, Scottsdale, and Chandler) and every single one of them said the ONLY model they didn't have was the Retina display. One store (Scottsdale) suggested I call this evening to check again, and when I asked them if they'd have it tomorrow she told me they had "no idea" and that the online ordering estimates were coming to 2-4 weeks out and it "could be that long" and "just keep calling".

That was the general consensus at the ones I didn't call, basically "we have no idea, keep checking".

Would Apple do a mid-day stock? I get off work at one of my jobs right before they open so I can always dip in, but if they reset the store midday I'd be kind of clueless about it and I don't have the luxury of time to just "keep calling" and drive over on a whim.

Also, would this be something that could be vultured out by in-store pickup online, or do they maintain independent stocks for launch items? I'd hate to drive over only to find that they're all on hold for somebody who bought at home.

I guess a small bunch of machines (with retina) will get to the stores at some point this week... but after that I think there's going to be a shortage to compensate the queue for the on-line purchases.

Is it possible that the supply chain for online orders jumped to those delivery dates conservatively so they could maintain a steady store shipment rolling in alongside the massive online orders?

I live in Houston and I called the Apple store in Memorial city mall, galleria and willowbrook mall.

Memorial city said theyll have the new MBP tomorrow for sale but not all the models will be ready (probably have the non retina ones ready for sale)

Galleria Mall said to come in after 12 noon and their not sure what shipment theyll be getting

and lastly Willowbrook mall.. they said they wont have any new macbook pros available not until thursday.

Ended up just ordering online.

In store pickup option is no longer avaliable for retina MBPs...they are either making them first come first serve like iPhones or they really won't be shipping to stores for a while :/

Just been into Apple, Highcross (UK, Leicester), they told me they were unloading retina models out the back when I got there, was waiting around for about 15 minutes only for them to come back and say actually it was the ordinary non-retina models, we are getting the new ones in on wednesday.

Also I was pretty angry to find out policy on HE discount in store has changed, only 30% off (£190) of that as opposed to 76% now a days, it remains FREE for a 3 year hardware warranty on the online store, I can't justify an extra £190 not waiting 2 weeks, so I will have to order online.

Disspointing to say the least!

OR I could wait until John Lewis get them in, get employee discount (12%) and a 2 year warranty. Decisions.

I'm confused, "only 30% off"? I'm pretty sure the student discount has always been between 14% and 16% depending on the model. And the free 3 year hardware warranty for students has always been exclusive to the online store.

Alex.m90, can you clarify the change to in-store HE discount please?

The 3 year AppleCare uplift is £60 for HE, and has always been available in-store.

The 3 year Applecare uplift is about £40 for HE, and is available in-store.

Sorry, in store it used to be a 1 year standard warranty and a hugely discounted uplift to about £50. But that's apparently 'changed' and it's only 30% discount on the AppleCare now, so it's about £190, I was fuming. I assume it's nationwide, but you never know.

Hardware discount remains at 15%, so a 15" 256GB came to £1724 with 3 year parts warranty & phone support in store.

I just ordered on the phone, came for £1520 ish with 3 year hardware and 90 day phone support. Huge difference. Although shipping estimate is 2nd to the 9th of JULY!!

Interesting shift of policy, wonder if its just Leicester. Bought an MBP and an iMac at Milton Keynes last year and got the uplift for about £50 both times. Disappointing this.

I just called the Amsterdam Apple store, they confirmed that the Retina MBP will be on sale tomorrow. They didn't know if they would also get 16GB versions.

I bought the MBA from the same store about 6 months ago and it was £50! It is annoying although still free online. What's really annoying is they told me it had changed online too so if it was in stock today they'd of essentially ripped me off £140 ( I was willing to pay £50/£60) I'm definitely going to be complaining to see where it gets me, doesn't hurt to try!

isn't the 16GB RAM a BTO upgrade? or does apple store sometimes have these special models??

Anyone think the stores will have them today?

I honestly would be shocked if the RMBP was in store since those are the only ones on back order online. Someone earlier said they are probably shipping from China, so I would assume they would be in store the same time they are shipped to the first customers who ordered online. The other models will definitely be in store though.

Why does apple do this?

I think they really wanted to advertise "ships today", but really it just meant order today and ship in a week. This is all just my opinion and based on what others are kind of being told when they call local retailers. I know with iphones, when i preorder them, I get it the same day they are in store....i would hope this is the same thing. I will actually be mad if i ordered it yesterday and it is in store today. Well more mad at the fact it won't ship for 3-5 days

No, any spec config has to be done by ordering it through online. They don't carry ones with a spec config.

That's not true. Stories with larger volume always carry "popular configurations" or maxed out configurations. That's how I avoid going through the BTO process. Of course, I'm not certain that the Retina will have this at launch but I've bought several Macbook Pro's right after launch like this.

I happened to have a genius bar appt today and asked if they had any on the floor or in back that I could see.

She replied that they actually have a bunch of units in back, but no one was allowed to touch them including staff. No units on the floor.

She wouldn't even let me buy one.
