The Pre has come far too late to the game, and hasn't come into it NEARLY forcefully enough.
I don't care about it not selling enough, it's the fact that it is a better device period.

This isn't the G1, where the phone itself was terrible in addition to not making sales.

It's revolutionary vs evolutionary. Palm's OS has changed the game and expectation across the board. Firmware 3.0 is just for it to catch up to other phones after all these years.

No multitasking. No offscreen gestures. No haptic virtual keyboard or hardware keyboard. no new ports.

Who cares?
Multitasking should be closely matched by the notification system in a week. The rest is not worth commenting on.

The upgrades it received are the ones that were most needed. The camera in previous versions was rather bad, and I'm sure it will at least be "adequate" now. Battery life is also a good 20% longer.

iphone arrived with no appstore

Yeah... two years ago.

If I came out with a brand new computer that didn't have any sort of mouse or user input other than a keyboard, would I be able to justify it by saying "IBM arrived without a mouse!"?

Basically it's the same incremental upgrade as seen from the 1G to 2G touch. At least the autofill is cool.

Offscreen gestures? Haptic virtual keyboard or hardware keyboard? New ports?

No, thanks. The only point you have is multitasking, which isn't a big deal for me. Push notifications is fine.

Boss I could do the same thing to the iPhone.

I could ask you to start typing an email in Safari, go to Notes to read something and put it the em... oh wait you'd have to start all over. Wait a minute, if you open more than 3 Safari pages the inactive ones go blank. Meanwhile the Pre has multitasking across all apps.

How about asking your friends not to message or call you for an hour cause you don't want the message to bump you out of your application?

Is this something you really want to start? webOS 1.0 blows firmware 3.0 to smithereens, so imagine updates months from now. Palm has a better ethic when it comes to updates than Apple and you know this.

Why would I type an email in Safari? I type my emails in the email app, which I can easily go back and forth between it and Safari by simply pressing the home button and the app button.

well you should. Because right now, the ONLY way the Pre is going to end up a better device than the iPhone (despite your inaccurate protestations that it already is) is through SUPPORT.

And what drives support?

That's right... all together now children.......

You've got to be kidding me. No really. Push notification? The Pre has fantastic multitasking that allows you to use 12-15 apps (ANY APP) at the same time, PLUS unobtrusive notifications, and Apple decided to use push noitification to match everything? How does that match multitasking among all apps? Hell you're still killing apps everytime you go App>Homescreen>2nd app>Homescreen>1st>app>Homescreen>3rd app.

Such an archaic system shored up by an even more archaic system. You'd be better off keeping track of apps with an abacus taped to the back.

Really, why do all new smart phones claim to be an iphone killer?
But you NEVER see the iphone being called a (fill in the blank smart phone) killer?

Its because all those other phones are trying to compete with the iphone
The iphone is on top and the other phones are just trying to keep up.

Btw who wants to use 15 apps at once? Also, do you know how fast that will drain your battery?

Do you ever use more than 2 or 3 apps at once?
No one does.
You can easily go from typing an email to surfing the web back to email, just as fast without multitasking than you can with it on the pre.

Plus pages load faster on the net on the iphone.

Anybody who is deluded into believing that anybody is going to pick a 300 dollar palm pre before rebates over a 100 dollar 8 gb iphone is deluded, no wonder they only sold 50 000 Palm Pres, no one gives a damn about multitasking.

I think that Push Notification is a great solution for a lot of apps, as you don't have to keep them open all the time. Obviously this won't help apps like Pandora, but for a lot of other ones, it will be fine. The only thing is that apps will need to keep your current state, even keep whatever text you have entered, etc.

I wish Apple would have released a better notification system though. They really need to do away with the obtrusive popups.

So are current iPhone 3g customers not going to be able to upgrade at the $199 price point like we were with the last iPhone upgrade?

oh hey, Palm Pimp makes a thread saying the iphone sucks compared to the pre, am i supposed to be surprised?

they're optional.

Bingo! You have to care that it sells well cause no developer with commone sense waste their time and effort to reach only a fraction of Pre phones in comparison with the Iphone.

You're basically going to be running the same 12-15 apps at at time you can run for the rest of the phone's lifespan. The point being the phone has to sell well enough to keep developers interested or else it's another failed Iphone competitor despite it's good qualities over the Iphone.

The Pre is $200. Best Buy doesn't do rebates and Sprint relented and did away with the update as well.

And compared side by side the iPhone has twice as much storage, while the Pre gives you twice the functionality ,at least.

they're optional.

Yes, but if you get a notification without the popup, you don't know what app it's for, and how urgent it is. What they should do is have notifications like Status Notifier, but when you tap the little icon, it gives you information about it.

exactly.

At some big mobile technology conference a few months back, someone asked "the iPhone only has (insert very small %, e.g 1%) of the mobile phone market - why have we spent ALL our time talking about it?"

The answer was given: "because the other 99% are all just playing catch up". :D

You've got to be kidding me. No really. Push notification? The Pre has fantastic multitasking that allows you to use 12-15 apps (ANY APP) at the same time,

Unfortunately, if you were running that many apps on the Pre at once, you'd be running every single app that exists for it.

well apps will be able to use their own, customisable sound notifiers, so you will eventually get to know which sound is for which app. Also, the appropriate App's icon will be badged.

oh hey, Palm Pimp makes a thread saying the iphone sucks compared to the pre, am i supposed to be surprised?
I never said the iPhone sucks. Hell I have a iPod Touch myself to play games alongside my Palm Pre. But it's a simple fact that the iPhone has nothing to match the features of the Pre, and if you fanboys keep lubing up for the BOHICA instead of complaining and forcing Apple to make real upgrades, you'll be stuck waiting instead of making real improvements to user experience.
