I respecced my pally to holy when I hit 80, but I levelled as a ret.

The advice you're getting is correct. You want strength and agility and anything that gives you +crit (i.e. for rings and trinkets, if you have to make a choice, take +crit over +haste or +AP). As a ret pally you really want to be maximizing your chance of critting because that is where you get the truly amazing damage output. You also want to use slow 2H weapons, not a sword and shield. Crits are multiples of the maximum damage your weapon can do, not a multiple of your DPS, so the bigger that top number the bigger your crits. Also, a slow 2H favours Crusader Strike and Seal of Command, which crit a certain number of times per minute - meaning that those slower swings are each more likely to have a crit on them, so your DPS goes up over using a slower weapon where the crits are spread out over a bunch of smaller damage hits. Unless you're a blood elf - i think seal of blood is based on a % chance of crit per swing so then you want more swings (I think - my toon is a Draenei, so I've never needed to look that up).

Gear like that and soon you'll be one-shotting your way through the clothies in Alterac Valley.

(It's probably worth spending some time on the forums over at elitist jerks. They go waaayyyyy to deep into theorycrafting, but read a few of the posts and you'll get an idea of how to gear your specc.)

Thanks, I appreciate the info! And I am specced as Ret. What is frustrating when I get these whispers asking what my spec is. I say "ret" and that is all I hear... :(

I've got one toon running around in NorthRend, my L71 Pally. I've got a second toon, a L64 Hunter in Zanger Marsh. When my Pally went there I pushed North into the Bladed area, spent some time in Terrokar, then pulled chocks at L68 to head to Northrend. Seems like the Forest to the South and Nagrand are lower areas. I'm thinking this time I'll go South instead with the Hunter and will fully explore the rest of Outlands before heading up to Northrend. The content is just to nice to overlook.

Two of the most important stats for melee (includes ret) are +hit and +expertise.

Could you tell us your ret pallys name / server so we can check your character out in the armory (or better yet a link to your character's armory :) ) ?

You think that's bad, try begin a fury warrior or a feral DPS druid. I seem to choose the least popular specs for groups :)

Feral druids aren't bad and can always find a group. Groups usually want you to tank but, you get to DPS in cat form when the group has a tank.

Geared fury warriors do massive DPS in raids and have no issues getting into raids.

Not my experience but, that's ok. I really enjoy both of these specs (feral and fury) and don't really care if it's popular or not.

Titans grip is awesome with the latest patch...once I get rolling it's incredible. Savage fury is super fun as well.

I'm sure I'll be embarrassed at how pitiful my stats are when they go public, but here goes: Arclight/Dalaran. Is it armory.com?

I might respec when I hit 80, but I have a Holy Priest coming up through the ranks as a healing toon. I really don't want to be a primary healer as a Pally.

Not so bad Huntn, you just seem to be working out the intel gear and replacing it with Str and stam which are not bad for lvling.

Here are my chars (come out of the closet time):

muradin: werecat, warhammer, leboom

Go to worldofwarcraft.com and select the armory. It's nice to be able to look at other characters and compare them to your own (it's good feedback).

Here is the link to your pally.

I wouldn't worry too much about equipment at level 71. You will be replacing it fairly quickly as you level to 80.

I got the same treatment. Don't worry about it. You can solo your way to 80 and then decide what you want to do. I have a friend that loves PvP and swears by ret, so maybe you should give that a shot. And plutonius is right about gear. Don't worry about it much - just go +Str +Agi when you get a choice. Stay ret while you level as that makes life a little easier. once you hit 80 you can start grouping or pvp and gear up.

And you indicated you didn't like the idea of being a pally healer. You should give it a shot. No one but you wants the +Int +Stam plate gear, so you don't often roll on the same stuff as others. And while the lack of a decent group heal or a HoT does make some stuff hard for you, a healadin rocks at keeping the main tank alive.

Also, in the spirit of you being willing to link your character, here is mine:

Can anyone tell me where I should be looking for better PvE trinkets?

Classes that can fill multiple rolls get the shaft alot of times when asked about their spec.

Druids, Shaman, Warriors, Paladins...all face those whispers, then never hearing from those people again. As a Feral, I was pretty excited about the Bear vs Cat specs change. ie. I could spec more into Cat talents, boosting my DPS or spec into Bear talents, increasing my threat generation and damage mitigation.
I specced Cat of course, while levelling to 80. I would get tons of whispers along the way, asking to tank, or heal instances. or having being /lol at me when I said "/2 LFG Heroics Feral DPS". :(

Now I play on my warlock, also at level 80. DPS or bust!
But I am considering speccing for Bear talents and tanking some heroics for awhile. Mix things up a bit.

I didn't realize that Feral druids got the same treatment. In PvP it always seems to be some feral that chews my face off. I notice because the animation of their attack (the cat kinda "paws" at you) seems so innocuous when compared to the massive damage you're taking.

When I PuG on my 80 feral druid alt, it's almost all the time as DPS (I have no trouble at all finding groups as DPS). There are so many tanking death knights around that I rarely get the chance to tank unless it's a guild group and I request it.

If I receive a random tell from a PuG group, it's 95% that they are looking for a healer.

All the people that I know that play this idiotic game, have no lives and are the future examples of the 40+ year old virgins.
Have fun.

I think that’s the oldest argument there is on video games. If it wasn’t for WoW or Xbox or whatever, what are they going to do? Study textbooks on their spare time to discover the cure for cancer? No…prolly watch TV episodes and or loiter (where you prolly have the best chance of loosing virginity, but anyway… :p). But you can’t blame productivity decrease on just a game just because you hear these things on the news. There are so many players so naturally there will be so many extreme cases. And just because you loiter in the streets and meet ppl to “sleep with” you can still be a loser. As a matter of fact if you do this “street social” activity, you are more likely to lack job skills and become a working class member…as opposed to playing with computers and influencing you to become a professional…even a programmer who makes 100k USD if you have the math skills…despite keeping your virginity for a little bit longer. Rofl! Actually, online dating is pretty common nowadays.

But one thing I don’t like about WoW is that it does have a negative impact on the economy. If you stay home and spend $15 a month and a little electricity you would stimulate the economy a lot less than if you went to the movies every weekend and buy popcorn, etc. But heck…watching TV is the same so maybe it just depends on personality. But I have heard of ppl going out less (like drinking / partying) and instead play WoW with each other. But I never thought of those types of “expensive” activities as great anyway. I guess if you’re going to waste your time “having fun”, you’re going to find one way to do it rather than the other. At least WoW lets you keep your virginity from being taken away while drunk and getting crabs. :D

I have no problem with people deciding that spending $15/mo on Wow is their entertainment. If you get into the game, it's a great deal. However, it does require balance and spending hours and hours planted on your brains is the recipe for health issues.

I enjoy the game myself but, I also have a lot of other recreation I enjoy (Dirt bikes, Mountain biking, sports, etc). I think you just have to judicious with your time with this game or any other activity that can suck you in.

Before I had a personal computer, besides my social and athletic life most of my entertainment time was spent reading or watching T.V. Now the computer takes up most of my former T.V. time doing things like playing WoW.

Here is a recent study that may dispel some myths about gamers...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29308728/

I always knew that the "overweight gamer" stereotype was a myth because I never really observed that myself. But I thought it was because gamers are younger and perhaps on a "deeper" level that "fitter people" would have been more exposed to (and related more to) sports and fighting from an early age, thus imprinting the "combat agression" into their brains. The fat kids would have just been picked on and ran if anything. :p

But they said it was because of the fact that MMOers watch the game rather than TV and hence are not influenced by commercials making you buy things to eat. Next time I see that juicy big mac on the tube...I'll think of this study. :(

I have a small TV next to my computer so I can listen to (and occasionally watch) TV while playing WoW. Multitasking FTW :) .

I'm guilty too, but I try hard not to do that as I typically don't enjoy what's on the tube when I do as I'm catching a little bit of the plot if it's one of my shows, but I don't get into it. Monday night I signed out of Wow for Heroes but it seems to be getting a little convoluted. ;)

Just when I think that WoW environments can't get any better I stumble into Grizzly Hills. My God there is a reason this game is addictive. The quests in the WotLK, from a story standpoint and interactivity, are the best that have been produced for this game. And that is saying something considering it's the 2 expansion.

Yes, I think the quests in Northrend are MUCH better and more creative than before. I also really liked lvling in grizzly hills. My next favorite area was K3 but, you need a flying mount for it.
