Intel Announces Centrino 2 (Montevina)

ok, who's betting on macbook/macbook pro refreshes tomorrow?

love to see that... but could they handle that + iphone? and would they even want to take the store down while so many people are buying the iphones?

I don't think Apple will release new MB MBP or MBA in the wake of the new iPhone. There's too much buzz about the new iPhone and new laptops won't get as much "omg-ness"

Not true - spec up a Dell laptop and it is considerably cheaper with more powerful components. Although the OS is worse :p. A similarly spec'd 15" MBP comes well over £2k, whist the Dell is around £1.3k. A saving of £700+ is not something to be sniffed at, despite the many fan-boy loyalties we have here, money is money...

Macs are price competitive only right after an update. Every other manufacturer lowers prices constantly as their input costs go down. Apple does it in large steps. So if you buy a Mac late cycle then generally you're paying much more than you would for the equivalent hardware from another PC maker.

Now the waiting game begins for new Apple hardware. Hopefully Apple will choose to update sooner then later.

Over 200 new laptops will be introduced tommorow. Why would Apple announce theirs in the midst of all that? Also, since the integrated graphics version of the chip isn't available for shipment, I'm guessing that Apple will wait at least a couple of weeks.

Not trying to call you out or anything, but according to this blog post over at Intel the issues have been resolved.

We’re offering two mobile chipsets, one with graphics which can handle the majority of needs very well, and a ‘discrete’ version. Over a month ago we shared that we had an issue with our graphics chipset, causing a delay in availability until August. But it’s fixed already and being shipping it to computer makers. It won’t be long for them to hit the market.

And why would that be?
Imagine, you get in the store for a $399 purchase and get out with a $2399 bill. Which company wouldn't love that? :)

The truth is, unfortunately, the iPhone will almost always overshadow any computer related releases for Apple. There are significantly more people who own iPods and phones, hence their interest in the iPhone, than Macs. Not to mention all the media attention the iPhone gets, it downright pulverizes the amount most normal macs get. One exception was the Macbook Air, but that's a niche market really...kinda "gimmicky"

i thought intel was getting rid of the front side bus and moving to the integrated memory controller? or is that just for desktop chips first?

While that may have some veracity, the bottom line is that Intel didn't invest in research for the Montevina just so laptop / desktop producers would just wait until Intel finished Nehalem.

Actually Intels mo is to stop producing the old parts (or make them really expensive) just to get companies to adopt the new stuff. So if you don't move on you will eventually find yourself paying more for parts.

I don't understand all the fuss about Bly ray. Why would I want a Bly ray player? So I can watch HD movies on a 15" screen and spend $25 on each one? Thanks but no thanks. I'll stick to DVDs and downloaded content. I'll admit that a Bly ray burner would be nice for storage purposes, but it's nothing I can't live without.

My .02

Have you watched a DVD on your 1440x900 screen recently? It's like watching a fuzzy VHS.

How good is the GMA X4500? Is it really as good as a low-end dedicated graphics card? I've heard rumors of such a thing.

No. It'll struggle against year old integrated chipsets from nVidia and AMD, never mind discrete hardware.

Not that a lack of integrated graphics hardware currently would stop a MacBook Pro update being released. Or maybe Apple can grow a pair and include discrete graphics in the MacBook as well.

I wish I could be optimistic about Intel graphics hardware, but they have such a poor record over the year of slow hardware and extremely late driver releases that being pessimistic is the best option.

I wouldn't mind a Blue Ray player as long as content that you can burn to a Blue Ray disc is of the same quality of an actual movie. Otherwise there really is no benefit besides larger storage. And I would rather use my modifiable external HD than a one time usage Blue Ray disc.

BR would be a non-issue if Apple were to actually allow their Macs to download HD (720p+) movies with something more impressive than 5.1DD.

The devil is in the details, once you start watching HD movies it is like DVD and downloads have Vaseline smeared on them.

My hopes and dreams for 15" high end:

Macbook Pro
2.53 ghz with 2.8ghz BTO
2GB @ 800mhz
320gb HDD
ATi 3800 (likely 3600 or nvidia 9600)
Possible case redesign.

New Mac Mini for me too.

I've been waiting to get a Mac Mini for awhile now and went and to the Mac Buy's guide https://buyersguide.macrumors.com//#Mac_mini and it said it had been about 218 days since it had been updated and average was 180 days.

Now I KNOW that Mac Buyer's Guide has no more clue than anyone else what is going through Steve Job's mind.

Now I'm not about to buy an Apple computer when it is historically updated about that time or before that time. It's now up to 343 days since it was updated. **** it!!!! Update the Mac Mini please!

Hahah. I don't have Vista, but on my Windows laptop, when I'm using a wifi connection, it says "No network connection" (or something like that) even though it's got a symbol that shows its connected wirelessly. And then when I'm using an ethernet cable it says "No wireless network detected," even though it has a symbol that shows its connected to a network. Why would I have both at the same time? It makes me laugh.

+1

Windows sucks and is useless for sensing where it is. I have been windows for the last 12 years but in November I moved to a Macbook and have never looked back. Taking the Macbook between locations is seamless. It just works. My work windoze machine never seams top know where it is. Its a piece of junk. I hate MS!

Not that I am a Mac fanboy. While I like OSX there are still parts of Apple I really do not like:

Why they still use a combo drive?
Why they do not update the Mini? I want one of these but not in its current configuration.
Why do they not put an iTunes media server on AE?
Produce a home media server that interfaces with MB, iMac, aTV etc (have a single point of all your media regardless of computer and user - PUSH media for the rest of us!)

I see some real opportunities for Apple that they simply ignore and I fail to understand why.

You have to admit, this is still pretty ridiculous though..

I'm not paying extra for a dedicated graphics card when I can spend that extra money and go buy a PS3 for my gaming needs and have a blu-ray player with that. Two wins for me and one lose for Apple.

Not really a loss for Apple. They have never touted their Macs as "gaming" machines. Although I welcome it but there's no big reason for Apple to ship MB's with dedicated GPU's when the computer gaming market for is a very small market. The computer gaming market is a losing market against gaming machines.

That could be done very easily with a software update for Time Capsule.

Think about it; the hardware's all in place (AirPort Extreme & 1TB drive)...

Someone wanna write some hacked firmware to allow ubiquitous access? :D

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.50 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.1.11328/542; U; en))

I think it'll be before the end of the Back 2 School promotion because Apple knows that there are college students out there who are counting on these MBP's to come out.

Why would a college student "need" a MBP?
Most college students are already on a budget and the MB is all anyone needs to get through school perfectly.

remember the days of G3 to G4 to G5...now it's like little mini jumps that don't do anything as far as performance goes. The only benefit this next update will bring will be if it comes with a case redesign. Sept. 23rd...guaranteed.

Agreed. I've said it in other places, college students rarely use their macbook pro for anything that the macbook could not do just as well.

But still you see them everywhere around campus. It could be because I'm sexist but every girl with a macbook pro doesn't seem to need it at all but just had the money to spend on the 'nicer one'.
