Was it desperate stuff by Apple when they did the same kind of ads targeting PCs?
Kind of, but that was punching up; this is punching down. Intel is still the market leader in laptop/desktop CPUs, yet is clearly feeling threatened (or, compelled to make a statement).

If you can milk 14nm for half a decade, you’re not on a Mac.

Go Intel.
To be fair to Intel, the fact they're producing competitive CPUs (benchmarks show their next chip outperforms the latest Ryzen in single core performance) whilst still milking 14nm is pretty impressive. Imagine how their designs would perform on a better node!

I'm not sure any company can punch down at two-trillian-dollar Apple.

I think the difference is tone. Apple's adverts felt a little more jovial, more good natured.

But weren't Apple promoting a notion that 'Mac and PC USERS are in essence different people' and were pushing apple towards being more of a lifestyle/creative choice; showing PC users to be bland, Excel-using robots where the Mac guy was pictures as being a cool, laid-back individual who got satisfaction in carrying out less generic tasks to be more creative? That's a campaign that took users in, otherwise we wouldn't be talking about it. The bar is set a little lower in this case.
I think you missed the irony of “not trying to be objective” in the post they were quoting, and trailing sarcasm.

What’s funny is that intel never promoted Apple using their chips when (and while they still) use them - I think the best they did was show up for the keynote when the PPC transition was announced. Now that Apple is leaving, they can only muster a childish “campaign” to dilute the reality - Intel’s innovation has stagnated and their model of chip development has been surpassed by high performance SoC fully integrated packages. With AMD knocking on their door (with both CPU and GPU expertise) and Apple flying their own flag, Intel has a lot to be worried about.

I'm not sure any company can punch down at Apple really. I think the difference is tone. Apple's adverts felt a little more jovial.

To add to mazz0’s point, I’m all for companies ribbing their competition, but the reason people are saying these ads are desperate is because they are badly done and the wrong target to boot.

So, Apple is a chip behemoth now?

Sure. These aren't particularly well-done.
No but Apple is a behemoth period. Can’t really punch down on one of the (and by some measures *the*) biggest companies in the world. However, I think we agree on the main point: these ads aren’t well done and Apple isn’t what they should be worried about anyway.

So, I had been wondering if anyone would be willing to work with Intel to get past their current situation. I mean, they’re not Apple able to control the whole widget, BUT they’re Intel, they might be able to get some chunk of the market to help upgrade the infrastructure of a PC such that Intel would have a better chance… Unfortunately for them, AMD exists and is showing that such measures, while nice, are not “required” yet.

This Ad Campaign shows that they’re going it alone and basically making the argument for iPads (which, in mobile, are ALREADY outselling x86 designs) and for AMD as a result. If I was long on Intel I’d definitely be spreading that money around a little.

Ok, even if I go PC, What can an intel machine do that an AMD can't?
That’s one of several things that shows this isn’t a well thought out OR presented campaign. The only things that require Intel are… things that require Intel :) and most of those are in VERY low sales areas, like the thousands, for legacy solutions no one wants to rewrite that just need a new chip every few years or so.

Apparently someone at Intel thinks so.

Or else why would they say anything at all?

:p
When you look at mobiles like laptops/tablets, Apple’s shipping more iPads than the entirety of the laptop market combined. Apple’s been beating Intel and AMD for years in this area with a processor that ONLY runs iOS/iPadOS.

Well that’s my point. Are they tacitly acknowledging that M1 is a big deal? If not, why do this campaign?

Exactly. Here are some thoughts that Intel might be thinking:

1. We're upset that we no longer provide chips to Apple... but it was such a small volume and we still provides the majority of chips to the PC market and server market. We'll be fine.

2. Oh crap... our secret is out. We've really been fumbling the ball lately... and Apple (and AMD) are getting all the press now. Quick! Make some silly ads! Diversion!

:p

Apple’s shipping more iPads than the entirety of the laptop market combined.

Citation please. I'm curious where you're getting those numbers.

Apple shipped 20 million iPads in Q4 2020

But the PC market shipped 90 million units during that same quarter... and laptops make up an overwhelming majority of PC sales these days... not desktops.

Hell... even if laptops and desktops were evenly split... they'd still each be bigger than the iPad.

So I'm gonna need a little help to understand how iPads outsell ALL laptops combined... :p

That is a really good news. Now there is someone with voice fighting against Apple and it is and will be good for the users, always. Sorry for the Apple fan(atics), they can go to cry to another place.
Eh? This isn’t even “fighting” against Apple. It’s not like this ad campaign will change Apple’s stance on a touchscreen Mac, as they already have a leader in the touchscreen market already. And, it’s not like Apple’s going to pay to have Rocket League brought back to the Mac.

These are just Intel's version of "I'm a Mac" but with a little less style. The only real area the M1 is lacking at the moment is in graphics performance, a discrete laptop graphics card still beats the M1 hands down. When Apple release their next generation of M processor for their 3Q hardware is when things will really become interesting.

Intel, you should really _use_ a MacBook and have a look at the Touchpad. There is absolutely no need for a Touchscreen. Anyway, touch my MacBook screen and I slap your fingers. Hard.

PS. Ever heard of "gorilla arm"? Touchscreen is a feature that people stop using after a very short time.
