Right. And this ad won’t change that fact much. At the MOST they could possibly hope for, it goes from 90% to 98%? We agree Apple Silicon is a blip, I’m sure Intel recognizes that, too. So… why even acknowledge that a competition exists?
They aren’t worried about Apple Silicon. Apple doesn’t sell AS, and the world isn’t suddenly all going to shift to MacOS.

What they’re worried about is what Apple Silicon represents: the existence proof that x86 isn’t the only, or even the best, path forward.

Apple showed that the emperor has no clothes, and Intel is trying their best to delegitimize Apple’s voice before anyone takes their benchmarks seriously.

This is Intel's shot at the M1. That's it.

Exactly.

So how'd they do?

I wonder if Intel thought "yeah we got 'em!" 🤣

The best part is... the M1 is the worst Apple Silicon chip that will ever exist. And it's still a beast! Just wait until M1X or M2 or whatever. And those rumored large chips with 64 cores, etc.

All that... with an operating system that is actually designed with these chips in mind. Hardware too. Apple really has the whole package... vertical integration... etc.

Intel? They only make chips.

How often do Intel, Microsoft, and Dell hang out in the same room?

:p

Don't get me wrong, $1800 mac and I can't play games easily without some crazy reboot, powercycle egpu nonsense.... Really really wish I could play PC games and/or apple committed to games on a mac like they said they were going to.

And what's worse is that the games I occasionally play USED to run in Mac OS X. Used to. Before Apple intentionally broke them along with every other 32-bit program I have.

The Windoze versions of those same games run just fine in Windoze 10.

I didn't realize that Mac computer were perfect? They never break? They never fail to boot? The keyboards are flawless (we all know that wasn't the case a few years ago)? I guess the Genius bars are fake and why does Apple give a hardware warranty and why does everyone blindly buy Applecare if they don't break? Please explain...

You didn't say if it was your laptop with those issues or just something you read/heard somewhere and are recycling here? I would almost bet MacBooks have those same issues (not all, but some...just like Windows laptops have issues, not all, but some).
I never purchase/d AppleCare past or present in my 25+ years of owning and using a Mac. I did have some faulty lcd ribbons on a MacBook go out but it was replaced by the default warranty. Knock on wood no other problems since then. Even upgraded RAM and HDD on my Pismo no issues. There was an issue with my 2014 MBP but that was my fault and a liquid related accident that fried the keyboard an affordable repair and replacement. What’s your point?

Apple can “commit” to games all they want. If the publishers don’t see the Mac as significant enough to make games for, they’re not going to. A “poor” selling game on PC is likely to still sell more copies than the entire current Mac gaming userbase.

Give it a few months and you will want to move back to macOS. Terrible optimisations and inconsistent UI on Windows. OEMs are going one direction and Windows is going the other direction, there is no intersection. This is coming from a long time Windows user that moved to macOS and never looked back!

I will take an iPad and a MacBook any day than a 2-in-1 combo that is heavy, cumbersome and not able to justify its purpose. Neither an iPad and nor a MacBook. All over the place.
Exactly. I will take a MacBook plus an iPad any day of the week over a heavy cumbersome 2-in-1 that is impossible to hold as a tablet and runs software that isnt optimized for either form factor. With iCloud, there are few disadvantages to owning two devices, since you can move seamlessly between them.

Cost is really not a big factor either: MBA ($850 on sale) + iPad 9 ($300 on sale) = $1,150. Five years of use no problem. (less than $20/month, or one latte per week at Starbucks). My kids got 7+ abusive high school and college years from their MBAs. Very few people get that kind of longevity from a PC. I'll stick with the Apple ecosystem, thank you.

the lack of games on the max is entirely a result from apples anti gaming behavior.
No laptop/iMac/ mini with modern GPU hardware. Bad driver support by apple with other GPUs. The insistency of having 5+ year old OpenGL drivers (when they used them) no vulkan support( cross platform GPU code) now insisting like Microsoft with their locked down ActiveX and now apples Metal. Metal is now apple exclusive.
apple gives zero incentives for games to be made for Mac…

you talk as if most devs make their own game engine from scratch. most games are made on cross platform engines that spit out metal for mac automatically. it's mostly a matter of perception. i developed with people that develop on mac and still chose to build windows only because everyone keeps saying no one plays games on mac yet my whole team was mac based.

Why is Intel fighting Apple? It's Qualcom and other chip makers who will eat their soup. Dumb...really dumb.

Several coworkers where asking me about my new iPhone 13 pro max today and another coworker out of no where started harping about his 3 year old galaxy s8 is better. I don’t get it at all
Samsung users are the worst in my experience. I have met many strangers, friends and family that use mostly Samsung products and all of them go out of their way to trash Apple. They have a real chip on their shoulder and some of that is directly due to Samsung's anti-Apple marketing. The rest of it probably comes from some inferiority complex.

Shame Apple ditched intel.
I would’ve almost considered consider buying a new ugly iMac if it had an intel chip.
Instead I bought a custom 27”
No Thanks m1. You’re garbage for even the most basic gaming.

Why would you want the hinge on a Mac laptop to fully open? They don’t have touch screens anyways.

Yes! Yes! Excelent! This is the conversation we should be having! Let’s not waste our time talking about processors, says Intel, let’s talk about all the components Intel has no involvement with and how 5 silly Apple ’fans’ were fooled by blonde wood into thinking this was an Apple focus group.

Agreed, one benefit that Apple could learn from this would be the ability to upgrade Ram, SSD, etc but with you 100%.

While I think Mac offers superior hardware overall, all of four of the attributes he mentions are legitimate advantages of PC over Mac:

1) Far more post-purchase upgradeability.
2) Far more access to games.
3) Far more variety of possible hardware configurations.
4) Touchscreens (if you're into that).

Having said that, the ad is (like most ads) misleading, since it carefully edits out the #1 reason people pick Mac over PC: Being able to use MacOS instead of Windows! Here's what I expect would be the reaction of most Mac users after the reveal: "I really like the hardware flexibility, but there's no way I'd buy one of these, because Windows sucks!"

Did you notice how, when they were picking up the computers afterwards, not one of them was on! 😁

[Yes, enthusiasts might also give more specific Mac preference reasons, like build Apple Silicon (low noise, high performance, long battery life), build quality, trackpad quality, etc. But I'm trying to capture how the average user would react.]

Stop changing the subject. Let’s talk about the hinge in your laptop: imagine if it could open all the freakin’ way dude!
Just imagine if the hinge in your laptop wasn't a piece of baloney that made the whole screen shake every time you tapped a key on the keyboard, or required a physical latch to stay closed!

Driving more spikes in the heart of any potential future with Apple. Not that Apple could grievously injure Intel, but Intel can grievously injure themselves, and who would rush to save them. Hmm...

Via my employer, I got a new Dell Intel i7 Laptop fully decked out! It's a kickass machine except that we must run Windows (Linux is not an option due to company policy).

One afternoon I was running late. Closed all of my apps (all emails sent all code committed). Put the OS to Sleep and closed the lid, threw it in my bag and ran out the door. I arrive home 45 minutes later and noticed that the bag was a bit warm. I opened it and the fans are going crazy! The heat is so intense to the touch that I let it slide out onto a table and then used pot holders to walk it outside as I expect it to ignite. After 10 minutes, the fans slow down and I open the laptop and there was nothing running, no runaway process, no bitcoin mining. Next day had IT check it out and nothing. Fast forward a month later and Dell has released a statement stating that this is normal and a "feature" called Modern Standby that comes with Windows 10 and besides you shouldn't travel with a laptop that has not been shutdown. WTF?!?!?! Since the 90's, sleep has always been enough to get the device into a state where you can travel with it.
