A calculator app is supposed to be a high school level project. Yet apple cannot get it right. This is extremely embarrassing.

What makes it doubly embarrassing is that it was reported in beta. Apple controls the hardware and the software and both have rather limited options. Yet they can’t get this simple app right? For a premium company this is really shabby.

Overall I still like Apple but there are enough failures to ‘just work’ to start to irritate me.

So this isn't a bug in the calculation process (i.e. the inherent processes within the app) but a problem with the animation process in the app. Sure it should be fixed but is this really a big issue.

For a start why is anyone adding 1+2+3 or other simple calculations using a calculator? Are people really typing complex calculations that quickly?

BUT it's NOT a calculation glitch because it's not 1+2+3 = 24. What you're getting is 1+23. If I typed 1+2+3 and that's exactly what was recognized and I get 24 then yeah that's a calculation glitch. All it is is the "+" sign isn't being picked up when quickly typed after the 2. It's a moot point if typed 1/2 a second slower.
You not calling it a calculation glitch doesn’t change reality.

You seem to have trouble with such a basic concept, but let’s do a test: it’s definitely a calculator glitch, correct? As in a glitch in the calculator app...

I understand the gripes and frustration over this. It honestly feels that there is some chronic in-fighting going on within Apple, or they are so distracted with the pace of adding new features, that they are missing some QC on the basics.

Google is also not immune from this, The Home Mini being sent out as test units with faulty hardware that they now disabled, Pixel 2 XL screen issues, software issues on Oreo, and others, are really starting to show a strained system.

Makes me wonder, do we really need brand new devices, operating systems, and new gadgets to be released by a corporation every year? The speed of getting new devices and features to an ever more demanding customer base is straining the giants, and, the pace prevents small gadget companies from ever really getting a chance to compete.

All that said, I know Apple has nearly always had bugs in new software, Many of the worst were back before the iPhone was even released. However, in those days, they were only a small fraction of the size they are now.

Doing some more testing I found the bug to be easily reproduceable when using the an operation like + at least 3 times and 2 of the operands have single or double digits, for example :

1 + 2 + 3 = 24
123 + 9 + 6 = 219
33 + 66 + 99 = 6732

Never understood the look of this calculator after the change to the grid version. It makes the touch targets look smaller and now it actually functions that way. Lol

Of course, people at Apple are getting old.
Speed is not tested anymore.
Rumors says Apple care will be limited to 25.
No. I would say they are young new hires, untrained, and un-mentored-by-older staff who understood what testing is and who seem to have disappeared.

What he's saying is that the calculator logic is fine. You're stuck on semantics of calling a "calculation glitch" because "it's in the calculator app". It is not a calculation glitch.

It's a horrible and lazy error, but it's not a "calculation glitch", because you can type slower and get the real answer every time. And you can reproduce the error by typing too fast for the app to respond to, every time. The fact that the app won't accept the second "+" in time is the real error. The app won't accept the second operand as fast as you type it.

Very sloppy and lazy. When people talk about the little details no longer being important at Apple, this is a fine example.

Apple yet again prioritizing form over function. While I enjoy their penchant for quality aesthetic, design is also how it works and this does not work well.

+1 for Calcbot. It's what I use when I need to do some real calculations with tape and everything. It's a necessity for the iPad which still—in 2017—doesn't come with a freaking calculator.

This was just a precursor to the 'it's not really off when the button says it's off' network feature. You don't REALLY always want to add stuff when you push the + button, do you?

I use both CalcBot and pCalc, both are great calculator apps with different feels. :)

I know you are using the *gate for amusement but this is not a maths issue - the app does its calculations correctly every time. The issue is the slowness of the app and its ability to cope with "rapid" data entry.

Seriously Apple, do we need animation effects for the operator buttons?

Exactly.

I believe animations are unnecessary... especially on something as simple as calculator buttons. I don't know how this got past testing.

I disable animations everywhere possible, on any device. They simply slow down whatever you're doing.

If I tap on something or click on something... I want the result to happen instantly instead of an adding an unnecessary drawn-out animation just to make it "pretty"

#noanimations

I know having little fun :) need a gate for every issue for fun :p

I just have to point out that I have been having this problem since beta 3. Haha. I use my calculator a lot...Haha. Like, every day for my job. So it is rather annoying. I have actually had to download a different app to make it work.

I understand what you’re both saying, I just disagree. If I type 1+2+3 and get something other than 6, I call that a calculation glitch.

I didn’t say there was a bug in the calculation algorithm, yeah input blocking during animation, fine but actually it’s a distinction without a difference: either way, it’s displaying a wrong result.

I can’t make your brain understand wrong result displayed = calculation glitch; your thinking is simply too rigid.

This should’ve been fixed early in the beta for sure because people are lazy but adding numbers like that is flat out bad to begin with for a similar reason. Humans often don’t hit the + button when they think they do resulting in jacked up calculations.

One should always solve two calculations and then add another. 1+2=3+4=7 and so on. You are far less likely to make a calculation mistake that way. Turns out the 11.1 calculator works perfectly when following proper calculating technique.
