It not a leak, it's marketing in the same way that politicians release copies of their speeches to the press the day before, so that the press can prepare their coverage - while it's still current news not yesterday's. This "leak" and the speculation about what it contains has put Apple squarely back in the headlines, just as it's going to release a new phone model and other stuff. The press are lapping it up and it's costing Apple nothing.

Without this hype, Tuesday's announcements would have been relegated to the unread backwaters of the tech sections of the press.

Bang on.

They should at least take away the licenses and memberships of everyone involved in the leak. Set a precedent that if you leak the software out of our campus, we leak you out of your job. If you leak things out of our software, we leak you out of your developer membership.

Possibly even litigate. Because people today have absolutely no regard left when it comes to ethics in such matters. Just for likes and viewership/ readership.
They probably don't even know who leaked it since the IPSW is the same for everyone. They can't really blame people who download it and discover things.

Do feel a bit bad for Apple, this year the rumors have been replaced with leaked facts directly from the source. Don't think people really care enough that a leak 4 days before the event could be a form of advertising.

So after everybody gets done grousing about all the leaks - can someone educate me on how all this stacks up against the new Samsung? (I am not very techy - I just use stuff)

This is what I’ve gotten out of all of it ...

Samsung’s version of wireless charging may be more refined than that of the iPhone X and 8 and 8 Plus, but Apple’s will most likely be better in the long run. After a few hiccups...

The chip in the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will ABSOLUTELY OBLITERATE the competition. Hell speed tests of the A10 cos the Note 8 and the A10 wins on most occasions. This A11 chip in the new iPhones may very well be 2 years ahead of everyone else... as someone else said the A9 chip is still faster than a lot of company’s flagship devices.

The Note 8 is going to have an higher native resolution than the iPhone X, but as we’ve seen before Apple can do wonders with other technologies that they have to make the display gorgeous. The display on the 7 Plus is the most gorgeous LCD display ever on a phone. I’m sure pro motion and all that will come to the new iPhones and Apple’s OLED whole maybe not as good as Samsung’s lol still be VERY NICE. (I read somewhere that Samsung is most likely selling Apple OLED displays from the S6, but that could very well be untrue as well)

The iPhone’s are all gonna have better stereo speakers then what was on the 7 and 7 Plus. So if day the sound will probably be better on the iphone’s.

With all of this said the main thing to look at is this... Apple has iOS and Note has a skinned version of android. People have there preferences over the other. My preference is iOS...

Have you ever been to Earth?

Whilst I admire the sense of ethics from some readers in earlier posts, I feel a little hypocritical as I have been drooling at the mouth on a daily - hell, hourly basis, for the latest news. :p

In a similar vein could all those oh so bad developers focus their attention on the next iPad Pro now, please? If it gets half of the features of the iPhone X, it will be a device to behold. :)

At this point Apple could hold an event to unveil the contents of Tim Cooks sock drawer and it would garner worldwide press attention.

I can't speak for anywhere else but here in the UK Apple announcements make the mainstream news never mind the tech news.
I'm in the UK. "Apple Releases Phone" hasn't been enough on its own to hit the - mainstream - headlines for a few years now.

"Leaked out"??? How does an entire release leak out?

The GM software was intended for internal Apple developers and close partners/carriers to test out. It was hidden behind a long random URL.

This URL got sent to MacRumors and 9to5Mac.

There was zero legitimate reason for this leak out. All eyes were already on Apple for September. Apple wants full control of the narrative to sell the story about facial recognition. Just as Tesla doesn't need to leak Model 3 or Model Y specifics, there was absolutely no reason for Apple to leak this GM.

The people who think this GM was leaked intentionally have no idea what they're talking about. They haven't worked day in a large company with a public affairs and external relations department. In their mind, they think letting a guy named "Rambo" reveal A11 is quad-core is part of Apple's master plan.

Completely agree with you. It's not even leaks at this point, it's just straight free marketing.

And the first bits of speculation and rumors started to come in right after the 7 models were released, so that’s about a year of free hype and marketing directed at hardcore Apple users (i.e. the people most interested in this info)

The story will be on the front page of the main news sites (Sky/BBC) on Tuesday, it won't be the top story (why would it be, there are hurricanes and earthquakes going on in the world) but if it was Samsung/Google/LG etc it wouldn't even warrant a mention.

LOL, you are on a site called MAC RUMORS. That's like going to a strip club and complaining because you seen nekkid titties bouncing around.

No.

Rumors and Leaks are different.

You can sing about me being on MacRumors and talking about leaks and how that is funny all day long, but that only means you haven't gotten the focus of my posts all along. The focus was on how no-one tries to keep it to themselves when it comes to positive leaking of stuff. I am not talking about spreading a rumor or a thought.

I am on a rumors site. I am not on WikiLeaks for you to say what you said and give an analogy that you gave.

A dog smells a stew in someone else's kitchen and can go and eat it off.
A human on the other hand, has the senses to think about the ethics of it, to not go and rob the neighbour of the delicious-smelling stew.

This is, of course, considering the neighbour did not plant the stew himself to tempt the neighbour to take it and make it seem like an organic theft. (Apple itself planting the GM to create hype)

I hope the simple point is now clearer.

And surely you could have given a more elegant example.

No chance this was done as a publicity stunt it does however seem deliberate, as did the Homepod leak.

When was last time Apple held a reveal that was substantial anyway? Each one is more boring that the last (BTW I've been using Apple products since original MAC).
Original iPhone and iPod events probably... iPhone event was the most exciting one in many years, I still remember it. It happened just 10 years ago but changed our lives so much since that time.

Original iPad unveiling was good. New Mac Pro was like "WTF?". Apple Watch - "ok, but could be better". HomePod - "meh, lazy boring design, Amazon Echo is cooler".

Yes, every event since Steve left is more boring than the previous one.

No, I don't think Apple needs help to hype. It's doing a grand job on its own.

You do know that Apple spends in the order of two billion dollars a year just on marketing, don't you. For that, you get a lot of skill and know how on maximising your headlines and how to get everyone to look at you at just the right time.

Wow, if this is accurate the A11 is going to annihilate every other processor out there. Hell, even the A9 still outperforms the competitors' current chips.
Perhaps it might have some work to do on this phone, now it has some pixels to push.

Bad for Apple? They most likely did this on purpose to build hype. Apple already knows people going to pick apart the firmware, and that's what they are counting on.

The hype is already there. Rumors have been coming. To hand out people definite facts such as this GM, it only serves to destroy the hype and burst the bubble as people will only look at the keynote to either validate or invalidate what they already know from the "rumors" and "leaks".

I do not think this was Apple leaking it.

If all these leaks cause the product launch to backfire Apple will close off the beta program which will result in a poor quality launch.

no, the article was updated. its 2 high power, 4 lowpower

but they can run at the same time

My guess would be for facial recognition. The cameras are expected to be running a lot of time.

This leak had nothing to do with the beta program. They were all from a separate branch of iOS intended for internal use.

Still trying to comprehend how intuitive it'll be to use ApplePay with FaceID. Right now I hold my phone onto the terminal with my thumb on the touchID. I just can't fathom any method that's more fluid or as intuitive. Am I now expected to hold the phone over the terminal and then back up to my face to authenticate and then back to the terminal to complete the transaction!? If so, then they just took a page out of the CurrentC method, the very one that died before it could even go live.
