Ok that’s fine, but MacRumors is a site devoted to Apple news and Rumors, so complaining about leaks is a lost cause. Regarding your second point: I really don’t think most people are leaking info for personal acclaim or attention. The only leaker I can name is Ming-Chi Kuo. I rarely pay attention to the source of leaks reported on this site.

Just because you are not able to name any leaker other than Kuo it does not mean that any other person can't.
Also it does not mean that Troughton Smith and others did not want their 5 minutes of fame. They think they are a somebody and therefore think that they have the right to do anything at all to keep that fame.
it does not matter if anyone actually has heard of them, but they might not realise that or they might hope that by leaking this info that people get to hear about them

It not a leak, it's marketing in the same way that politicians release copies of their speeches to the press the day before, so that the press can prepare their coverage - while it's still current news not yesterday's. This "leak" and the speculation about what it contains has put Apple squarely back in the headlines, just as it's going to release a new phone model and other stuff. The press are lapping it up and it's costing Apple nothing.

Without this hype, Tuesday's announcements would have been relegated to the unread backwaters of the tech sections of the press.

Somehow this goes well beyond the usual Apple hype machine of controlled leaks. This is serious, trust me on that. Let me say I know my way round security and controls and systems.
This was not sanctioned by Apple, this was done without their permission in ay way shape or form.

Thats what Steve T-S does is pick apart code. I don’t fault him honestly. Or journalists/people on reddit loading up the GM early since it was from apple’s servers (Ipsw.me links appldnld.com URLs of ipsw’s All the time) not pirated or torrented or second hand, and signed by apple for a period of time,

It’s not like it would have all been spoiled if you just read quick headlines and decided to stay off Mac-sites for the extended weekend.

If you go to macrumors, its likely you’re going to hear about rumors and/or leaks.

I think the sole fault lies with the person who leaked the URLs, and definitely had to have known since they published the iPhone X firmware too.

I hope the general populus don't assume that only "developers" with their "speshal toolz" can run a "strings" command in a bash prompt? In ye olden dayes, we ALL had to type commands - even word processors had no GUI, but in this dumbed-down, spoon-fed consumption and consumer bubble world, "developers" and "coders" (yuck! That generic word!) are seen as "uber 1337" (and many do NOTHING to dispel this utter guff, leaving their "mystique" conveniently intact...)

Learn a few BASIC Unix commands, and find things yourselves; you might even get a headline out of it :)

Bad for Apple? They most likely did this on purpose to build hype. Apple already knows people going to pick apart the firmware, and that's what they are counting on.

Erm no, no and hell no! This was not sanctioned by Apple.
I know my way round security and systems and also know what things look wrong but are 'staged'. This was not the usual Apple hype machine. This was something else.

There are plenty of times I look at my device without unlocking - to check Notifications, time, etc.

Actually there is another good point to that .... what if I do not WANT my phone to unlock when I look at it?
Even if I have to click a button.

I always liked entering a passcode, even instead of Touch ID.
Touch ID is great to confirm your identity, but a passcode is something only known to you.

There should still be a method to confirm an action that can only be performed using your private knowledge.

Same old boring iOS, sure the iPhone 8 will be all new tech, catching up to the looks and bezel less display Android phones have had for a year already.

But at the end of the day, the fancy new phone wears off quickly, and you left with the OS you use day in day out 24/7, and iOS 11 is just like lame boring, locked down iOS 10, which was just like old iOS 9, which was like lame iOS 8, and the Fischer Price toy iOS 7 which started it all.

Who gives two ****s about the new design of the iPhone X, when it's running the terrible iOS still ? I'd be way more excited and pumped if the new phone was just the iPhone 8 Plus, but with a totally revamped major revision to iOS. That would be breaking news and truly jaw dropping. But right now, this X is basically a Galaxy S8 running iOS. Yawn :( Once the shiny new toy feeling wears off, it will feel just like the iPhone 7, and iPhone 6S, and iPhone 6, etc...Nothing new at all really here.

To be honest, I fail to see the big excitement for the iPhone X, What's the big deal here ? My point being the OS in it, is the same thing we've seen for years, nothing new here, just old iOS, nothing new. Sure the phone itself is better FINALLY, but that's it.
Who gives twi @@@ts? tens of millions of us! Some of us use the Iphone for work and android is not up to the task.
Ios gets more frequent updates as does the apps that run on iOS.
Go on youtube and watch any video about any android phone..they are the shiny new toy until time passes..
no updates for android nor its apps...sorry, the new iPhones are going to break records..next!

What IF these 'leaks' are just bogus?

Tim comes out saying: I know you heard a lot of things.......:Do_O

Down comes James Bond (Daniel Craig) from an helicopter.....to deliver/show the totally unleaked truth that he kept safe :p
Wasn't there a reason Apple was out for the James Bond's rights

Of course sales will be through the roof. The iPhone is the Big Mac of burgers, over a billion served !! It's the Honda Accord of cars.

I'll stick with my Pixel, which is the Ford GT of phones, and gourmet bison burger.

The iPhone is the Grandma and teen phone nowadays.

I hope there is a way to shut off Face ID and just use the traditional way of opening my device.....

Why wouldn't there be. You don't have do use Touch ID and Face ID is just its replacement (at least on the X).

The real question is WILL Face ID right out of the box be a replacement. For example I can use Touch ID to open my bank's app rather than log in. Can I do that with Face ID or will the bank have to decide if it's going to accept Face ID and push out a compatible app months from now?

Kind of overkill don'tcha think? It's a leak about features in commodity electronics. It's not leaked vulnerabilities to the power grid. Perspective. Apple has an event next week, confirms what we know and the world keeps moving.
To build on Serenity Caldwell: Gadgets are silly, but they’re also people’s life’s work. Imagine not being able to tell your SO for years what you’re working on, and then the surprise launch is ruined by a malicious co-worker. The keynote is their chance to shine, to see what they've been working on for years finally being revealed to the world. A culmination of blood, sweat and tears working in the dark. This leak just ruined thousands of Apple employees weekend by taking the air out of that surprise.

It's also why everyone who suggest Apple intentionally leaks these things should shut the hell up.

It's a great release, I'm just waiting for the next "one more thing" moment.
who knows, we may yet see that! I have an iPhone 6 and almost bought the 7 but waited..the X or whatever it is will more than enough for me..anything unexpected is gravy!

Leaks or not, still excited for the keynote. We know individual tidbits, but it's still going to be interesting to see how it all works together.

It's also interesting that with all these leaks, everyone is still as confused as before with "how is [insert] going to work". THAT is why keynotes are important. ;)

It is possible Apple themselves released it, I guess anything’s possible, but man, that is leaving SO MANY details to be leaked in a slow trickle from dissecting the code like has been this weekend

I have way more doubt that thats the case, than its a disgruntled employee.

I mean, literally leaking the iPhone X specific firmware? That was the mother lode.

I agree with HOmePod thing. I think its a controlled leak to get people not surprised that there’s no home button/Touch ID but instead face ID.

I still don’t like the idea honestly/hvent let that one sink in, but thats a separate thread/subject,

It’s widely believed that rumors of 7/7+ omitting the headphone jack, which of course proved true, leaked EXTREMELY well in advance and were controlled to get the public comfy with the idea, and more or less, used to dealing with it
There's no doubt in my mind the HomePod release was intentional to get the public comfortable with the lack of TouchID/home button, just like the 7/7+ and the headphone jack. I do think the most recent leak is more likely a disgruntled employee, but the rumor I heard was totally unreliable so there's no way to tell. Regardless, something crazy happened here, this is way more than just human error.

I really think it's a shame. I would have loved to see the iPhone X on stage and learn all the details for the first time at the keynote. I just want one year with relatively no leaks. Maybe next year.

Touch ID requires you to touch your finger to authenticate. Face ID doesn’t require you to do anything. If you’re using your phone, you’re authenticated. No action needed. How is Touch ID more convenient?

With TouchID I can have my iPhone on the table laying flat and unlock it without picking it up, even if it is a fair distance away.
Even with FacialId system that has wide viewing angles it can not see my face from the same angle and distance.
Also with Apple Pay I do not wish to have to waive my phone in front of my face to pay with it, or have to put it on the terminal, raise it to my face(or place my face near the screen)then lit tit up to double press the side button then back to the terminal.
I also do not wish to have someone grab my phone, point it at m face then it unlocks and I never seem it oe them again

For all the talk about moving to a non-moving home button last year because it was a point of failure, it's odd that they seem to be relying so heavily on that side button in the up and coming iPhones.

NO, by disclosing things he wasn't allowed to under the terms of his NDA

There is no NDA here, as it's not software they released. Someone without a dev account could have downloaded and installed that software - you can't punish someone for talking about something they found.

The argument could be made, however, that he (and everyone else) has been talking about the RELEASED software for months, so I guess if Apple wanted to be dicks about it they could revoke his dev account on that basis.

The sad thing is I could give two hoots about a bezel-less display, I’m perfectly fine with my bezel. If it’s now going to be screen, my thumb doesn’t even like reaching to the far side of the home button:confused:

I feel the usefulness of the one home button is greater to me than the space it takes up. I mean why not eliminate the entire top bezel and move all the sensors and camera to the bottom along with the home button.

I don’t know, this edge to edge is not a user feature for me, to me it’s kinda silly, just keep using the space for more battery.
This. I can't emphasize enough how frustrating all the sensation is over these edge-to-edge displays. It's all form over function.

Since this new phone has been rumored over the past 9 months, I've been thinking about how difficult it would be when I'm holding my phone one-handed while recording video if the screen went all the way through where the home button is. You'd constantly get false focuses and spurious touches every time your thumb accidentally moved or tapped any part of the touchscreen. That's why phones have always had bezels, and that's why they should continue to.

I have no intention to spend extra for a phone that has a touch sensor removed, an OLED screen that's more prone to burn-in than the high-quality LCD the Apple has been using for years, and lose what little bit of grip area that's being scuttled unnecessarily.

What worries me is that next year when I'm due to upgrade, is whether Apple will bring back Touch ID or whether we'll be stuck with this inferior design going forward with the "iPhone XI"/whatever replaces the iPhone X.

who knows, we may yet see that! I have an iPhone 6 and almost bought the 7 but waited..the X or whatever it is will more than enough for me..anything unexpected is gravy!
I've been waiting for a bezel-less iPhone since the iPhone 6 rumors started. I just would have preferred very few leaks, and to have been surprised on stage. But with the way the rumors mills work now, I doubt we'll ever have something like that again.

I have a feeling we’re going to hear story developments of “how it happened” eventually..

Heh, if grandma is running Qsc's touch mix app to run her bands mixer, KORGS kaossilator, Imaschine2 etc and other soft synths and music apps on her phone yes...I wouldn't use a pixel for that.. the pixels is great for kids that want
to customize their chat apps though.
