Hopefully it doesn't run like crap. That's usually the problem with Apple continuing to support these devices for so long; the performance isn't optimized and the OS runs way worse than it did when the device was newer (to the point where you really want to discard and upgrade to something newer).
Hasn't really been a problem for any device after devices with the A5 chip. At this point the oldest devices are going on 7-8 years support, so if the user experience was poor for any of them, Apple would've just axed them.

remember this whenever someone mentions "APPLE'S PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE"
It still applies. Once people install iOS 15 on their iPhone 6s and find that it’s even slower than with iOS 14, they’ll feel more motivated to buy a new device.

I’m still on iOS 12.x. Somehow, typing performance has been getting worse and worse, even without OS updates.

Are you serious? So a 1500 dollar iPhone 11 Pro Max can’t run an animated weather. Background? I had those running on my homescreen 24/7 on an iPhone 4 back in the day, wow!!
Well, an 11 Pro Max is newer than an iPhone XS, so it can run them... Apple website lists the animated backgrounds as needing an A12 Bionic or above!

New animated backgrounds are available on iPhone with A12 Bionic and later. Air quality maps are available in Canada, China mainland, Germany, France, India, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, UK, and U.S.

Apple is exposing how silly it is to be spending that much on a phone anyway. Proving people will pay whatever. Yet they are supporting iOS 15 on 8 year old devices.

Idk why people think this is some amazing thing supporting 8 year old phones. It forces developers to create for the least common denominator……..an 8 year old product. good for consumers, not so great for innovation
Supporting older devices isn't a bad thing. They can still support the newer hardware without completely dropping the old ones. Several of the iOS 15 features are restricted to A12 and newer.

3rd party wise, Android/Windows etc. developers still have way more variables to deal with.

ipad air 2 was introduced in 2014. **** this guy is literally a zombie of all gadgets. It won’t die
And I am browsing on one right now - it might not be as snappy or modern looking anymore, but I honestly Think it would still be enough for how most people use an iPad. I even play pubg on it from time to time.

although I Think this is evidence of just how much iPadOS is Holding the new iPads back.

so if you were not given the OPTION to install iOS 15, you’d be singing the same tune “Apple cut support for my iPhone early, now I have to buy a new phone”

No, looks like they did roughly a 2015 cut-off. Strange that we are now in a situation where iPads are being supported longer than Macs.

There's much more to it. Apple has complete control over when they produce an OS that isn't supported on their own hardware. Unless they're producing features that require newer Intel hardware (as they did with Metal), it's often the case that they drop hardware due to the manufacturer discontinuing support for newer drivers. This is why the 2013 iMacs were the only Haswell based Macs to not be supported for macOS Big Sur (because they had a Wi-Fi adapter for which there was no available updated driver for). This is probably why the 2014 Mac mini and 2013 Mac Pro are supported while, for all other Mac lines, the requirement is 2015 or newer.

I remember only one such instance: iPhone 4s and iOS 9. A sad tale indeed.

But I think Apple learned its lesson cause it hasn't really happened since.

The A7-A8 generation for example (iPhone 5s, 6, iPad Air 1) which was left at iOS 12, ran very smooth on their last software version, in fact they were running better on 12 than on iOS 11...

No, it's been this way for pretty much every A-series SoC being at the bottom of the supported devices list. I have a first generation iPad mini (A5) and it runs iOS 9 like garbage compared to how it ran earlier OSes. I have a fourth generation iPad (A6X) and it runs iOS 10 like garbage compared to how it ran earlier OSes. I had a second generation iPad mini that ran iOS 12 like garbage compared to how it ran earlier OSes. And I have an iPad mini 4 that runs iPadOS 14 like garbage compared to how it ran earlier OSes (such as the OSes I list above). This is not something that stopped ever. I do agree that iOS 12 gave A7 devices and A8 iPhones an okay send-off compared to prior releases, but Apple had made a special effort to optimize those versions and it was still not great.

See above. You're wrong.
Hail to everyone talking about how Apple is planning the obsolescence of its products.

It has always been the case that an iOS/iPadOS device on its final operating system runs like crap. If nothing else forces you to buy something new, it's this fact. Also that your apps eventually stop working. So, yeah, planned obsolescence IS in effect here.

The only problem with my air 2 is the 16 gigs of storage lol.
Oof. Yeah, I have problems with iOS/iPadOS devices with 32GB of storage nowadays. 16GB is only enough if you don't use iCloud photos and only use streaming services and very few non-stock apps. Barely usable if you want anything to actually live on those 16GB.

People will always be unhappy no matter what Apple or any other company on this planet will do. Personally I am glad iPhone 6S is supported by iOS 15. Now I wonder which devices will be unsupported starting with iOS 16. Will it be iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 or just the iPhone 6S?

iOS 15 may be compatible with the iPhone 6S, but it remains to be seen whether it will slow it to a crawl.
iOS 9 is compatible with the iPhone 4S, but it made the phone unbearable to use.

surprised that they didn't drop 6s.

YMMV I reckon. I have a Mini 4 and it runs iPadOS 14 very well. No performance issues whatsoever. I mean it’s not fast, but it’s been that way since iOS 11 at least.

The battery life is being reduced by at least an hour with every major update, but that’s another story.
