No. With Android you can still run newer versions of apps on older OSes that aren't being pushed out to slowly make your device run slower! The idea that you need the latest OS and not just the latest security updates is baffling to me.
Sorry but this is not even remotely true many Mini android version is from 8.0 on word actually it started with android Oreo onward some abs are not compatible certain devices even the hardware support adjust the developers haven’t even bothered to make sure that they work across the entire lineup of hardware. Moreover what’s worse is not just the app compatibility across all devices is the OS so if the android app has been made for certain OS it cannot be pushed down or download it manually to an older android OS version

It’s just further proof that apple is focused more and more on money and not innovation. Today was a massive opportunity To tell the world why an M1 iPad Pro with 16GB of ram exists (they could have last month too), but they didn’t.
I don't think that's fair.

Apple has a HUGE task on their hands with the AS conversion. All while maintaining their software release schedule.

As far as the M1 iPad, I don't see the problem. I know many want the iPad to be a Mac, but that ain't happening.

However, for those of us that are iPadOS fans the M1 is a beast of a machine, for the same price. The multitasking, continuity (or whatever it's called), and new camera features are fantastic.

I honestly don't see what's not to like.

Yippy my wife's old first gen SE that I handed down to her is still good to go.. She never uses it except for a phone call and text. Maybe watch Youtube once in awhile. She's happy with it. I keep updating it for her. She can share pictures of her Children and Grand and Great Grand kids off iCloud. Only has 16 gb of storage so i update it off my iMac as the updates are too large. lol She is lost with the tech stuff.

Of course the new iPad Pro is great. It’s just severely underutilized for the chip inside. And today apple gave little Reason of anything coming to entice anyone with a 2018 pro or newer to upgrade.

I agree.

I think that is true of every single Mac I've ever owned, given my use cases. A faster chip will get whatever I want to do done faster. I'll never complain about that.

Apple gave those reasons when the M1 iPad was released, but only to those that wished for a more powerful, keep-for-longer iPad. Everyone who wants a Surface equivalent is going to continuously be disappointed by Apple for another 5 to 10 years.

I held back on buying an(other) iPad for almost a decade. The M1 IPP changed my mind. Now it has enough storage, RAM, and processor power to last me another decade.

For me, the Post-PC era starts with the M1 IPP. ;)

As long as iPadOS running on these devices, post PC era doesn’t start.

Heck, I couldn’t even transfer 20GB of files from my USB-C SSD to 2018 iPad Pro.

Count me in for wishing macOS running on iPad Pro

I have that feeling that the m1 iPhone fold pro whatever is coming… so all the old ios15 iPhones will be old school in a snap

Yeah but the experience won't be anywhere near how iOS runs on modern devices.
To be fair, iOS 14 is still pretty snappy on my 6S. The thing that drove me to upgrade to the 12 Pro last fall was the horrendous battery life. I didn't feel like replacing it again to keep it usable for a little longer. If it hadn't been for that I would have kept it another year.

Are you serious? So a 1500 dollar iPhone 11 Pro Max can’t run an animated weather. Background? I had those running on my homescreen 24/7 on an iPhone 4 back in the day, wow!!
your 11 pro Max has the A13 chip in it so it will run it

Installing iOS 15 beta on iPhone 7. This phone gets so hot, I need put ice pack to cool it down. LOL

THIS could be very interesting for many:

(from Apple.com) ...

Software Updates

iOS now offers a choice between two software update versions in the Settings app. You can update to the latest version of iOS 15 as soon as it’s released for the latest features and most complete set of security updates. Or continue on iOS 14 and still get important security updates until you’re ready to upgrade to the next major version.
So leave my 2016 SE on 14. And upgrade my everyday phone the 12 Pro. Maybe a sign of performance issues on older platforms, but leave it an option to upgrade. Maybe a way to downgrade if you do a DFU since the older version would still be signed.

Idk why people think this is some amazing thing supporting 8 year old phones. It forces developers to create for the least common denominator……..an 8 year old product. good for consumers, not so great for innovation
This is ain’t 1980 anymore and devs can drop some devices in the cutting room floor as they like when they believe apps won’t run nicely on certain devices.

Ok, for one thing Apple isn't slowing down older devices. Let's shut that theory down right here.

If you are referring to the battery thing, they were trying to help customers by making their battery last longer so they didn't have to replace it so the phone didn't die not even midway through the day or during an important call. Yes, they should have told people about the battery health, yada yada. But they were only throttling older phones with a bad battery. If you had that same model phone with a new battery or good quality left, you wouldn't notice anything at all!

The other reason for devices slowing down is that the more features you try to bring to a phone over time, the more the oldest phone in the supported list struggles with it. But people would whine if Apple dropped support. They are damned if they do, damned if they don't. But planned obsolescence or  doing things to force people to upgrade is a bad myth!

People want the new OS for those new features! They want the new shiny thing. Can you imagine the feigned outrage if Apple timed WWDC with the phone release and made you buy a new phone to get lets say 95 percent of those features? Apple can do no right in some people's minds. They are an easy target being the biggest name in tech and the most valuable if not in the top 3 at any given time. It's just sad honestly. We should all be more grateful. They aren't perfect but they do care about consumers and today they've shown that in spades be it this news, the news about FaceTime on the web, privacy, or not dropping any iPhones on the supported list this year. But some people are just unpleaseable!

I thought for sure… but I’m a bit shocked and relieved that my ‘back to the future’ original SE is now going to be still trucking along in retro/newest design style and an iOS update. Use it mostly as just a phone/message really compact unit, and browsing web when needed, and now can take my time to update to an iPhone 13 or maybe even 14!

And I still have a headphone jack for my nice sounding Master & Dynamic’s!

Battery life on a 6s plus with iOS 14 is miserable, even with a 3 month old battery. Phone performance is …OK for normal everyday tasks but you can’t charge the phone again and again.. I totally agree with you! People reading this with A9 devices on older batteries, don’t bother changing it again. It’s over, if you can afford buy a new iphone. The 6s plus was such a great device, bought it on day one and loved it for many years, but at this age and time with iOS 14, the old SoC just eats the battery like crazy.

My 6S (not Plus) needs recharging too often for my liking. App updates also take a while. Other than that it’s fine.

Someone at Apple must like the headphone jack, I guess.
