Got one in my ‘18 4Runner. Never used it except for the CD slot phone mount I used for a while.
My 2010 Accord has the 6 CD changer mechanism. Which I actually prefer to picking out something on the phone. Everything’s just there, don’t have to mess around with apps or menus, it turns on as soon as the car starts, it remembers where it left off when I get back… I’d probably miss it if I got a new car. Very easy to just load it up with 6 favorites and let it go.
I’d probably feel differently if I had CarPlay in that vehicle. Our ‘17 Accord has CarPlay in the infotainment system, and a single disc CD player. I think it’s the last year that Honda offered the CD player in the Accord, it may still be around in the civic or CRV though I’m not certain.
Since it’s not a disc changer and I like variety, the player gets used much less often. The infotainment system/CarPlay is kinda slow and unresponsive, so that doesn’t get used much either. Ideally I’d be able to play music files off a USB drive, which it supposedly is capable of, however it does not recognize any of them. 99% of the time it just stays on the FM radio.
Most of the high end aftermarket car stereos you can buy now from Pioneer and such have nice big screens with CarPlay, still have CD players, along with USB playback, and all the bells and whistles you can think of… and I bet they’re nice and responsive too, moreso than Honda’s cheapo stock electronics. Not sure I personally care enough to upgrade the stereo in my car, but they exist.
I think the only way you could avoid a car with a CD player over the last 15 years is if you avoided cars altogether.
